Off I-40 in northern Arizona there is The Painted Desert/Petrified Forest a 40 mile loop drive,Meteor Crater, around Flagstaff Walnut Canyon cliff Dwellings-this has a steep hike back to the parking lot but has benches every so ofter to rest, take water, south of Flagstaff on Alt 89 take the toad, scenic drive to Sedona great red rock buttes and towers,20 miles west of Sedona Jerome ,old mining town,on I-17 between Flagstaff and Sedona Montezuma wells,Montezuma Castle, cliff dwellings,Fort Verde S.H.P.,north of Flagstaff 18 miles on Hwy.89 a loop road that takes you through Sunset Volcano Natl.Mon. great cinder cone also Wupatki Natl.Mon. great indian ruins futher up 89 to Cameron west on 64 to the Grand Canyon the best drive to the canyon with lots of view points, indian ruins and the watch tower. Great list! One item I would add depending on the time of year is Monsoon Season. The storms are short in duration and change the desert entirely. The amount of lighting is rarely seen in other parts of the country.

RE: Your favorite Arizona attractions

Personally, seeing the Arizona border in the rear view mirror as we were moving from AZ back to FL was the best thing I ever saw there. Sorry, but I just had to say it. If one likes dirt, dust, rocks, and wind, then you will be happy. We gave it 11 years and couldn't stand it another day.
That is funny as we feel the same about Florida. Luckily, different strokes for different folks. We will take AZ over FL any day of the year!

So how can you, say the FB pages are bad if you have not viewed them.
kinda sounds like all the bad post about Mexico... from folks that never been here ?????
Did not say anything about THE FB pages but that in GENERAL FB is not secure or safe. It is FB itself that my issue is with. The only thing negative I can say about the private locations you can post to is if the owner does not feel the post is PURELY supportive of the the message he or she is trying to convey, the post is deleted immediately. But again it is their site/blog, their rules!
I am surprised as there is one private blog I read reported the caravan they were in on the way South was stopped and extorted. This was still up on the site when I last checked and NO ONE linked or said anything here. http://robert-carolann.blogspot.com/2012/01/bandits-12-oclock-high.html titled Bandits, 12 O'Clock High! dated Fri Feb 13th

RE: Facebook "On the Road in Mexico"

The big problem here is that rv.net is a general RV forum, not a Mexico specific one, so you have people taking a look here who have never RV'ed in Mexico, then deciding to offer their armchair opinions on its safety. The advantage of a specific Mexico forum or web site is that those folks seldom waste their time to try & find them. Here,I am sure, the moderator has his hands full trying to keep the armchair naysayers at bay, & IMO does a pretty good job of it.
AND then there are many on rv.net that have driven Tens of Thousands of miles in Mexico, own property in Mexico, do business with Mexico, have lived Tens of Years in Mexico, have local Mexicans as friends and love the country. They/We will voice our opinions, give advice and answer questions the best we can but not everyone will agree or like every post. Thankfully we have the freedom to do so! AND Mod will let us know when & if we cross the line on the intent of the site.

RE: Why do many class A owners use campground showers

We use the campground showers if we are staying somewhere that does not have sewer hookups for an extended amount of time. We find this mostly at the County, State & National Parks or the Parks in Mexico.

RE: Mexican emergency health care

I too had a small event happen in Kino with my good friends moisheh & wife getting me in the clinic in the early morning hours before it was even open. While they do not charge or take payment, they will accept a donation for medical supplies. The clinic like anywhere in the world never has too many supplies. I left a nice sized & reasonable donation for the excellent care I received.

RE: Safety Article by Safety Consultant in MX City

At first this will seem to have nothing to do with this topic but I hope you will try to bear with me. In 1998 we bought a house on an island off Puerto Rico called Vieques. We lived there full time from 2000 to 2006. Some may recall a lot of news about Vieques between 1999 and 2003. This was the island the Navy used for target practice and after a "civilian" employee of the Navy died in an accident there were years of protests making incredible claims about how the Navy was killing the people on the island and how there was a very high cancer rate and all kinds of other poisonous stuff and so on. The protest groups learned early on that the more sensational they made their statements the more attention they would get. They also quickly learned that no one would ever check to see if anything they said was fact. The made wild and unbelievable claims that many believed and they got news headlines. Almost none of what they said was true. To this day they still continue to make these claims these many years after their claims have been proven to be lies. Tell a lie long enough and often enough and somehow it becomes fact. No member of the media ever checked any facts about Vieques and they reported what the protesters said worldwide. Celebrities and stars and politicians and activist the world over showed up in Vieques to protest. Eventually, in 2003 the Navy left Puerto Rico. Those of us who were there and close to this situation think the Navy was planning to leave anyway. In my estimation about 95% of what the protesters claimed were outright lies with no evidence of any kind to support what they said - it was speculation presented as fact. I learned that media will feed us anything that makes headlines to sell whatever it is they are selling.
I have no idea why everything that happens in Mexico gets reported in the US media or why anyone pays much attention to it. Nor do I have any idea why the media does not report the vast majority of the same sort of crimes that happen in the US. What I do know is I have lost just about all faith in what any media company has to say about just about anything. What they say rarely has much to do with fact. They seem to report opinions and/or what someone said without ever investigating to see if what that someone said was a fact - or not. Someone said it so it must be true?
So I don't know what is true and what is not true. In my experience Mexico is as safe as anywhere else I have been - IF I pay attention and keep up with what is going on and follow the basic rules many books tell us about how we should behave in Mexico. We are in Mexico now and have been for about a month. Most of the other RVers we see here are Canadians - we see very few from the US. Canada has about one tenth the population of the US but in Mexico they outnumber those from the US by almost 10 to 1. RVers from the US read the stories and believe they will have problems in Mexico so they are afraid to go. Canadians just do whatever they feel like doing. I don't know why this is. But I do know there is just about nothing I might say that would convince those in the US that Mexico is nothing like what you might think it is like.
In general I would agree with you about stories written by News Journalists. The difference and why I opened this topic was because IMHO a Security Expert in Mexico attempted to make an unbiased report to help Travelers in Mexico. This is not the norm and SHOULD be considered a valuable read for the Mexico bound RVer. As anything including YOUR posts & MINE, a reader should form their own opinion with ALL information available both positive & negative. It is good that you have responded as it may encourage a reader to take a second look at ALL information with wide open eyes & encourage a RVer to educate themselves more on the topic. This ensures the best possible decision by each & every Traveler.

RE: Safety Article by Safety Consultant in MX City

I know this discussion will come up continually and will never end. As for why statistics from Canada or the US matter - the point that posters are trying to make is that the risks are with us no matter where we go. People can stay at home in San Diego or wherever they happen to be where they feel safe and say that they are safer there than they are somewhere else. That may or may not be true. I have posted on other threads on this forum - as have many others - with links to statistics from both Mexico and the US and other areas of the world. Today there was another headline online about a murder every half hour in Mexico - the vast majority are cartel members killing cartel members. So I looked at one of those US Dept. of Justice FBI website statistics for the US for the past the 20 year period for 1986 to 2005 (latest available I can find) and did the math and came up with 2.25 murders per hour in the US. So my question continues to be - are these continual posts on this forum supposed to tell us it is not safe to go to Mexico because criminals are killing criminals down here? What is the point? Why? To warn us that someone got killed somewhere we might go? But don't talk about places not to go in the US because this is the Mexico forum so we should only talk about places we should not go in Mexico? To keep us informed of what we already know? That the cartels are killing each other to control drug routes? What does that have to do with me? This is an RV forum - is it not? So when something happens to an RVer let me know. By any statistics I have seen the risks seem to be greater to civilians in the US than in Mexico. Why all the fear mongering.
You're right on. It's a mentality issue. Very hard for people to accept their own reality.
I read useful information for a RVer. Not everyone is as knowledgeable, informed or as wise as some on here. To me it was finally a third person security expert without any special interest, running a caravan or Mexican Campground & etc, trying to make a balanced report of travel (and this includes RVing) in Mexico. He says many positive things as well as some negative. IMHO, he was trying to be pretty objective.
When we were NEW RVers in Mexico, this was the type of info we were trying to find. NO one wants to run into a area that they should not be in. We did once in Cosala, Sinaloa, MX and it was not good. If we had known in advance what we would drive into, we would not have gone. We were lucky! Another story for another time.

Thanks guys for the support. I too was pleased to find an article written by someone who works in the field and IMHO tried to be balanced. There was information that is valuable for use. No matter who writes an article or where it comes from, I have found there is most of the time something to be learned if one has an open mind.

Safety Article by Safety Consultant in MX City

This seems to be a pretty fair article. He highlights that some areas are VERY safe and some have major concerns. At the end is a link to his website. This is useful for RVers and has a lot of positive info. The story is dated Jan 11, 2011 on Borderland Beat. I am just highlighting the one story not the rest of the page so don't beat me up. It is a good useful story done for CBS News. The story is titled, "How safe is Mexico for tourist?". http://www.borderlandbeat.com/ The Consultant's website is https://sites.google.com/site/policereform/
Remember you don't have to read this, your right in a free country!!!!

Most of us it seems use DirecTV for TV.
There is not any data to support this statement. It is a personal preference. Both work equally well in the States and have nearly the same programing. We like and have DN. If you don't have a preference then go for the best deal being offered at the time. Good luck.

Favorite Place/s I have stayed!

A couple for us
The Pink Hotel on the side of the Copper Canyon, http://hotelesbalderrama.com/mirador.htm This is RV related because we stayed at the old KOA in Creel and took the train down to stay at the hotel.
The other was a eco-dive resort on the Atlantic side roughly 50 miles North of Belize. RV related because a couple we met there had driven in their Motorhome and the resort let them camp on the road to dive at the resort. Was lucky enough to be there before the Cruise Industry came in and ruin the area with a pier and expansion of there routes. Called Maya Hal in those days. There was just a little dirt road that went a long the coast and nothing else. Was great! This it now, http://www.mayapalms.com/

RE: Canadian killed in Melaque

Moisheh, I am curious about something and you would have the answer, I assume, having a home in MX. I know it is not legal for us to bring firearms into Mexico but is it legal for someone to own one or have one in your possession when you are living there? Are privately owned firearms prohibited (except for the criminal class, of course!)?
Mexican citizens can have some firearms but there are tight restrictions. Foreigners can bring in hunting arms for a regulated hunting trip but again very very tight restrictions. Like ANYWHERE in the world, bad people can obtain firearms if they wish. Like ANYWHERE in the world, bad stuff happens!

RE: Furnace Fan Noise

Update:
I followed the excellent advice of the posters on here. Adjusted to make sure nothing was rubbing and tried to oil. But alas I could not oil. Noise was reduced for 1 1/2 more uses over the last two weeks. Then it happened, the noise from h*ll in the middle of the dark COLD night. Changed over to heat pumps and lasted the night. I then pulled more shrouding from around the fan so I get really get at the fan shaft. Grabbed both sides and the thing had MAJOR play. The bearings are gone. Made an appt for repair ASAP but will be over a week before I get the work completed.
Hate repairs on the road. Anyone have an idea what a rough cost will be to replace the fan motor unit? Rough idea as I not looking up all the specs on the furnace.
Thanks,
