Alaska 2013 How Early?

If you want to start the trip up through Canada into Alaska on the early side of the year what is the best time to start? From Glacier National Park we want to take it slow and enjoy the area, I would guess that we want to spend 3 to 4 weeks to hit Alaska?
Any suggestions from veteran Alaska Travelers would be appreciated.

RE: Best Option for satellite dish

I am absolutely amazed with the Tailgater. Will lock on to all three satellites in about 8 minutes. Single strength with transponder 21 is usually 50% for each of the three satellites. When changing stations that require a satellite change the wait is negligible.
Dish has hit a home run with the Tailgater!

RE: dish tailgater

After several years of a dish and tripod it was time to try the Tailgater. I was very skeptical about the device. I did my homework saw it an an RV show and was amazed at the technology. I bought one from Dish and their standard shipping is 2 day express. Took one of our 211's out to the Montana and hooked it all together. I selected my state, it scanned, did the check switch and within 8 to 10 minutes I was locked on to all three satellites. I have tries it several times and have found no problems.
I am impressed!

Suggestions for Mackinac City Area MI

Has anyone camped recently in this area? Trying to settle on a good base camp for our time there. We have a 32' fifth wheel, some of the CG cannot handle this size. Any suggestions?

RE: For heaven sake slow down!

From reading this thread, I have come to realize that when it comes to talking about Yukon and Alaska highway conditions people seem to use code words, bad really means terrible, and worst than last year really means you have to be out of your mind to subject your equipment to this road torture. I don't care how slow you navigate these roads, I can't believe that your RV will ever be the same. We all know they are not made for these extreme road conditions.
We did Alaska last year with a cruise tour, it is a magnificent area to see.
It was great reading all the honest posts, thank you all.
The wife and I still have a lot to see here in the lower 48.

RE: For heaven sake slow down!

We are up in Northern Wisconsin anticipating our first RV trip trip to Alaska in a couple of weeks.
After reading this thread and some others, I am having second thoughts of "full contact road combat." I thought from my research that the entire Al-can is paved, paving means exactly that. Sounds like some stretchs like at the end have never been really properly surfaced. Don't get me wrong, road construction is the norm around here, but some comments and observation lead me to belive that what you are calling a road may be very unsafe at any speed? Am I over reacting?
Thanks!

Could we still do Alaska leaving Mid July??

I always planned to do Alaska by leaving in mid May, but this year we have a chance to leave for Alaska in mid July. Roughly we would take 2 1/2 weeks to get there and 2 1/2 to get back to Northern Wisconsin. We saw a great deal of the state last year on a cruise tour, so we have just a few special places we would like to visit by RV.
Looks like we would be in the state for 3 solid weeks of mid August and head back returning during the first week or so of September.
With this time frame, do we miss the big tourist rush of early to mid summer? Would there be any issues with services like food fuel and campgrounds during this time of the year?
Any advice and comments will be greatly appreciated.

Cleaning Plastic Sky light above Shower?

Just wondering if anybody has attempted to clean the sky light above the shower area in the trailer? Mine is pretty rough looking after 5 years up there. I have seen some kits at Wally World to polish/clean the plastic headlight lenses on cars? Do you think this would work or is there a a better product?
Thanks and happy camping!
