RE: Mail

We have a northern home, and a Florida home. We spend approx 6 months at each house. We just file a Temp change of adress with the USPS. We stop delivery one day before we leave our northern home, and three days before leaving the Florida home. There is NO charge for this service, however they do not forward catalogs or magazines.

RE: Homesick for the sunshine!

We are actually packing for our October trip back to Florida. I have a box in the garage, one in my workshop, and DW has one in the kitchen. Every time we find something we need in Florida,it goes in the box. When a box fills up it gets stored in the MH. Too much work keeping up this Michigan home,it may be for sale soon.

RE: Pet peve

Don't forget,it is easy to get cut off from computer access. While traveling we sometimes don't have internet access, for several days. Sometimes our computer won't get online for some obscure reason.I just got out of the hospital and was off line for four or five days. There are many reasons for not responding with feedback.

RE: Booth Dinette???

To regain some of the storage, you loose with removal of a booth, you can use wicker baskets in the corners. We bought two Longenberger, picknic type baskets, for storage. I still have the benchs, stored in the basement,of our northern home. I may get rid of them soon. We still use the dinette table, with custom made chairs, from Newmar.

RE: Miffed at Monaco Parts

I would be very happy that I could find even one. Finding two gives you a spare. The packaging of two per box,is probably due to low production numbers.

RE: intake valves?

Intake valves usually don't burn. The 460 Fords had some problems with valve seals not working even while on warranty. At 14 years of age the seals are most likely shot.

RE: loss of hearing

Our Ford chassis came with an audible alarm, that has a 20-30second delay. I can hear the alarm even when my hearing aids are not working that well.

RE: Does such a thing as a decent gasser exist?

The Ford V10's built 2006 and later, are in a class by themselves. Before 2006 most gassers were not that great. With 362 HP and a torque curve that produces power over a wide RPM range, there is no need to consider a diesel. Newmar builds coachs from entry level,up to over $500,000. The same building methods and materials go into all. When ever anyone asks us what brand our MH is,their eyebrows allways go up,when we say Newmar.

RE: Class A motor home vs. car for trip out west

Why own a motor home,if you are going to leave it home for a long trip? Money is flying out the window every day you own a MH. The longer the trip, the closer you will come to breaking even.

RE: Why don't more families "motorhome" vs "travel trailer"?

Snow birding during the winter, you see mostly class"A"s,and very few TT's. In the summer, while school is out,you see mostly "TT"s and Pop Ups. While our kids were young,we had a small TT,then a pickup camper, and finally a large used Pop up. All were financed. We paid cash for class "A" when we bought it new. It just takes time to become financialy stable.

That class "A" owner may be in the same position I am. His class "A" is the best trailer tow vehicle he owns, therefor it gets puts to work.

RE: Nice RV parks in Northern Michigan

OK That is the type of input I needed. Finding links direct to RV park web sites is not always easy. We will spend a few weeks checking out what is available, for long term stay. We are reasearching our options, for when we sell or Michigan home. We may buy a condo,a small cottage,or an RV lot.

Nice RV parks in Northern Michigan

We are looking for RV park recomendations in the northern Michigan area. We must have full hookups and prefer pull through site,of a good size. I lived my whole life in Michigan and did a lot of tent camping in the 50's,and family camping in the 70's(pickup camper&popup). Now with a class "A",and retired we want only the best parks. We are having a hard time finding pullthrough, full hook up,large lot parks. Snow Bird camping in the south has spoiled us. St Iganace and Ludington we have covered. What about Traverse City and the Lake Superior area?

RE: St Ignace or Mackinaw City area Michigan

Every year we go to St Ignace at that time for the big car show. We always stay at LAKESIDE RV PARK. They have nice size lots, with full hook ups,and a view of the bridge. They own water frontage across the road. They also have about 8-10 pull through sites. Our Avatar picture was taken there. It is a quiet country setting, just two miles from town.

RE: towing a 5200# jeep with a gas motorhome; 8.1 l wrkhrs

The weight police are really going to get me. I tow our Grand Cherokee on the car hauler,in my Avatar, with our Newmar gasser(362 HP V 10). I did trailer tow testing for AMC Jeep, and I know how vehicles are rated. Chrysler,at one time rented prototype trucks to Jayco, to get in service data. Trucks rated at 14000# tow, were regularly towing 21000# all across the USA.

RE: Florida Snow birding cost

Remember,"you get what you pay for". Florida cost more than Texas, but it is worth a whole lot more. The further south you go,the warmer it gets. Tampa is absolutly the northern limit. Punta Gorda is on the sub tropic line, and starts the really good weather. You will never run out of things to do in Florida. Stay close to the water, otherwise why go to Florida. Riverside RV is a great place to winter, near Port Charlotte, and Punta Gorda,Arcadia mailing adress. We loved it so much we bought a manufactured home near by. By staying four months, you have a better chance to find a good park to stay at. At most of the good parks it is hard to find a shorter reservation.

RE: Toad Braking System

We use the Ready-Brute system,(tow bar with ready Brake built in). This system can't be beat. It seems like every week we read about toads being burned up while towing, this is caused by the frequent failure of electronic braking systems. The Ready-Brake,Ready-Brute uses no electricity,no vacuum, and no hydraulics. Once installed, hook up is just snaping on the dog leash cable. I found out about this system on this forum, and have been very grateful, ever since.

Another vote for Steer-Safe. No more fighting the wheel, every time a truck passes you. I actually drove our MH on a day with 45MPH winds.

RE: What fuel mileage should I expect? Is this a good set up?

The Ford V10, 2006 and later is an awsome engine. 362 HP is all I need. We just came back from Florida,on I-75,towing a 4800# toad. I had trouble keeping the speed under 70 without the cruise control. Uphill, through the Smokey mountains, was not a problem. only once slowed to 55MPH at 4000 RPMs. Most hills were taken at 3500 RPMs,and 62MPH. I have never gotten more than 6.7 MPG towing,or less than 5.9MPG. The car and trailer in my Avatar weighs 5000#,and our Grand Cherokee on the same trailer is 6000#.

RE: Are You Glad to be Home Again

We got to our northern home on Saturday, after 6 months in Florida. Still unloading the MH,and going for doctor visits. We love both places during their best seasons.Burned out kitchen light needs replacing, high winds blew shingles off the garage roof today. At least the lawn was mowed and looking good.
