RE: Kyllonen's RV Park on the Kenai Peninsula

I have not been to that particular campground, but as a general rule, like Joe B said, every private campground in Alaska is pretty tight. Expect to be asked to back up, unhook your toad, or unhook your tow vehicle. Some are so tight that you cannot extend your awning, but I have never been in one where I could not extend my slide. However, if you have slides on both sides, you may have issues at some places. For the most part, all the state/government campgrounds have tons of space in comparison. What you give up in lack of hookups, you gain in space and privacy.

RE: what could be the problem

If you're dealing with a hyper-thyroid cat, you can have a compounding pharmacist create a rub-on gel. Not sure about hypo-thyroid, no experience with gels for that. A little dab rubbed into the ear can be a lot easier than shoving a pill down a resistant gullet. But the bigger problem is the blood tests to make sure the level is correct. Not worth the trauma to a 16 yr old cat that is almost impossible to draw blood on without sedation. I know it is not the right shoe for everyone, but it fits me just fine. But yes, the transdermal gels rock! Wish they could be compounded for a larger range of medications...

RE: what could be the problem

Take her to the vet and get some diagnostics run. Many conditions can be treated with daily medications. BUT!!! Do not feel forced to go that route. If you know that being medicated once or twice a day will freak out or completely stress your cat, then discuss other options with your vet. Such as NOT medicating and just providing "hospice" care. This is not a blanket statement, it needs to be case-by-case, and discuss it with your vet. But do not feel bad if you decide you'd rather not have your cat spend it's last days/months stressed and tortured by medicating. Some cats don't mind meds, some cats turn into the devil. I am personally NOT medicating my 16 yr old cat (thyroid issues and kidney issues). She will tear me up, she will hide all day, it makes her life miserable. She HATES going to the vet, it completely stresses her out - so the routine blood tests for some meds is not an option. I have her on a prescription diet, and when that isn't enough, I will help her across the bridge. But I want her last days/months spent in comfort, cuddling with my kids on the bed, not hiding and dreading her next dose of meds.... Now if she were younger, I would absolutely medicate her, but I'm not fighting with her at 16 yrs old.

RE: Dog , hair wore off ?

You can also look for a working harness that already has the sheepskin on it - try Working Dog Equipment. These harness are designed to be comfortable for dogs that are working, much like when you are hiking. So the "chaff" points will be non-existent or in a "hairier" area... Pet store harnesses often don't fit as comfortably.

Camera monitoring system for a horse trailer?

I was wondering if anyone had any experience or advice regarding installing a camera monitoring system in a horse trailer... I have an old horse I need to keep an eye on as we go down the road. It is a gooseneck horsetrailer, no living quarters. I need the install to be as simple as possible, because I (a woman with zero tech skills) would be installing it myself. I don't need expensive state of the art equipment, in fact, I was wondering if I could rig a license-plate mounted back-up camera to work somehow? Obviously I would mount the camera in the horse compartment, not on the license plate of the tow vehicle. Minimum drilling/wiring would be nice.... Wireless? But how do I supply power?

RE: Need advice

Definitely keep the ad on Craigslist. I kinda disagree about the large pictures from the hosting sites. They take too long to load, and too long to view. In the last week or so, Craigslist changed it's format so that it displays larger pictures. Make sure you also "renew" the ad every 3 days - if you have a Craigslist account, all you do is click the "renew" button and you're done. It is super simple - I don't know how complicated it is if you don't have an account, though. Make sure your ad has a phone number AND the anonymous email link to increase the responses you get. Some people prefer to email, some prefer to call... We buy and sell a ton of stuff on Craigslist, and usually sell it quickly. I just sold a stock trailer in a few days for $1800 that a local dealer wanted to give me $500 for in a trade. About 99% of our chicken/cow/horse/tractor/acreage "supplies" come from Craigslist. Craigslist rocks!

RE: Looking for camp spot near anchorage for summer

The camping in the schools is a good idea - and you don't have to be in the "city" of Anchorage. The Anchorage school district extends all the way to Chugiak, and there are some superbly beautiful school grounds in Eagle River and Chugiak - surrounded by nothing but wilderness, not houses and busy streets... My children attended Alpenglow and Birchwood ABC, which both have wonderful settings/view. But really any school in Eagle River or Chugiak would be amazing!

Eagle River State Park near Anhcorage (close to Eagle River is very nice) It is an awesome campground, BUT - it has no hookups and a limited stay time...

RE: Looking for camp spot near anchorage for summer

There are several nice privately-owned campgrounds in Palmer. About a 30 minute drive on the Glenn to the edge of Anchorage. The Glenn from Eagle River to Palmer/Wasilla is a 4-lane divided highway, just like the interstate system in the lower 48. From Eagle River to Anchorage it is 6-lanes. So the commute is easy, provided that you avoid rush hour. It sounds silly to say that Anchorage has a rush hour, but it definitely does, as the Glenn is the ONLY way out of town, there is NO OTHER road, side street, dirt path, NOTHING! You might find somebody who will let you park on their property, but Anchorage has some pretty strict reg's regarding where and how long you can park RV's.

RE: Dog Harness recommened at Rally

I have yet to see one of the front attach harnesses work successfully. We have several LARGE dogs that come in wearing them, and we won't even use the harness to lead them to the back. The dogs immediately get put in a slip leash. To me, the concept of control is just wrong, and the positioning of the harness gives you none. I suppose in an extremely obedient dog, that faithfully stays at the "heel position", it could work. But an unruly dog jumping around - ZERO control. I would put those harnesses below retractable leashes when it comes to control. I think they are the latest "gizmo" and somebody's way of making a buck off of unsuspecting people. Stick with a good old collar (choke, prong, martingale, classic, etc) or with a harness, whether it be a "control" harness or just a harness. But no front attach gizmos.

RE: Breakfast Burritos

We do "boling bag" omelettes - one egg per resealable sandwich bag, mash it up and add whatever veggies, meats, or cheese as you like. Seal and throw the entire bag into a pot of boiling water for a few minutes - enjoy! That sounds like a great kid-friendly recipe... Do the eggs come out of the bags easily? Do you ever have a bag break or melt?

RE: Dr. Doug: Vectra 3D-is it worth the cost?

IME, Vectra should be priced right in line with Advantix, they should be within $1 of each other. It is a weight based product, so the bigger the dog, the more expensive the dose. Application-wise, Vectra 3D is a very well thought out product. Much easier and neater to open and apply than either Andvantix or Frontline. Packaging is better, too. Effectiveness??? About on par with Advantix or Comfortis (for fleas). Tick wise?? Applied a dose on Friday to a boarding dog, and he STILL had live ticks on Monday. So that's not so great... But we haven't had any bad reports from clients, yet... Some studies have shown that no one tick product is effective for a full 30 days. If needed, you can "double-up" your topicals - USING DIFFERENT PRODUCTS - one on day 1 and the other on day 15. There are EPA regs on some topicals preventing them from being recommended to be used more frequently than every 30 days, and heavy fines for any clinic caught doing so. BUTTTT - there is nothing preventing an owner to use 2 different products. You can also try using a Preventic Tick Collar - pretty effective, but needs to make contact with the skin, which is hard on heavy or long-coated breeds. You can shave a path for it if needed. It's also pretty toxic if ingested, so be aware if you have a collar-chewer in your house... But it is also on manufacturer back order at the moment...

RE: Bicycles in Alaska?

We used our bikes a lot to tour most of the coastal towns. Narrow streets, crowded parking. Not a problem with a bike, always room for parking. Most of the towns are small and fairly flat, you'll run into a small "hill" here or there, but they are easy to avoid. I can't remember ours ever getting so dirty we didn't want to use them.

RE: Dog tie out cables

If you are handy enough, you can buy the supplies to make your own cable in a shorter length. The easiest option is using chain, no tools required - have it cut to length at the store, 2 quick links and 2 snaps and you are in business. The beauty of using the chain is that you can quickly make it much shorter with a double-ended snap. I would make the cable/chain only about 6' long, and use a screw-in type anchor that can be found at any pet store or pet section. Hopefully you would be able to find a 12' diameter area somewhere near your site to install it. If not, shorten the chain... You could also make a "line" on the ground with cable between 2 stakes, slide a ring onto the cable before hooking it to the stake, attach the dog's chain to the ring, and wala! you have a line the dog can walk freely up and down, with limited side-to-side distance.

RE: Camping with horses...

The main problem I have is that I will *need* to be near civilization with hotels & restaurants. That is putting a major crimp in the plans. We won't have the camper, just my truck + 36' horsetrailer, DH's truck + 35' flatbed, and a 26' Penske truck + car dolly. The Voltage toyhauler is already in DC and will stay there. I would be up for tent camping or primitive camping out of the horse trailer tack room, but I don't think anyone else in our party of 6 would be happy with that arrangement. The links and info ya'll have provided has been priceless, and has pointed me in a lot of good directions! We'll see how this all turns out!

RE: Camping with horses...

I'm hoping to have a set-in-stone itenirary with reservations already made along the route. That's my plan anyway. But it is taking forever to try to research it by hand... I'm not really getting anywhere. I was hoping there was an easier way. I really don't need anything fancy. Heck, my parents KOA allowed horses anytime provided they had their own highline or portable corral. I'm kinda looking for the same deal - don't need horse resort type facilities. Just enough ground to set up camp. And park a few big trailers. And a moving van pulling a trailer... Okay, maybe I am asking for a bit much...

Camping with horses...

In about a month, we will be moving to Washington, DC. Well, technically we are moving to rural Maryland, but DC is an easy landmark. We are taking 2 or 3 horses with us, and ideally, I would like to stay at a campground each night with facilities for the horses. I'd prefer it not be a primitive state campground, I'm looking more for something with W&E and a bathhouse... I was hoping there was some sort of online trip planner that I could use that would allow me to search for "horse facilities", but so far, I haven't come across one... Any ideas??? Thanks! From me and the horses! And 3 cats and 4 dogs, too.

RE: will car seat fit c30

I would think just about any carseat would fit if you removed the table.... There really isn't anything in the way then. I'm not familiar with that model of RV, but most are designed with removable dinette tables.

RE: Mosquito Repellent Safe for Infants

If you shop around online, you can find mosquito netting that you can put over just about anything to keep the bugs away. Some of it has an elastic band to secure it over strollers or carseats. Peapods also have pretty fine netting... My youngest was camping from 10 days old, in Alaska. We encountered mosquitos by the rivers big enough to carry him away....

RE: Looking for East Coast Idea

Im not sure what Frontier Town you are talking about but if it is the one that was in NY in Adirondacks, it's long gone. I grew up about a 20 minute drive from there - we went often. It was a neat place...
