Vegas to Wichita I15, 89, 98, 160, 163, 160

We are in Quartzsite for the winter, going to the Rally then have a wedding in Vegas 3/31. So April 1st back to Kansas to see grandkids & DW birthday is 4/5, do not want to take I40. So thinking of taking I15 north to Hurricane & taking 89 east to 98 to 160 to 163 as I want to go through Mexican Hat then back to 160 and Kansas. I am pulling a 37' HH with a 07 5.9 auto with Jake. I know I will have to check the weather as it can get bad this time of year. It has been a few years since going over wolf creek this time of year. I took a canoe down the San Juan over spring break & camped at Mexican Hat one night. Going west was ok but on way back wolf creek was shut down & had to go down to Santa Fe to get home. If weather is bad will take I40 to I25 to 56. red

RE: Cold weather (-10 to + 20F) extended stay need

Excel: Is the only fifth wheel with "Minus 10-Degree Guarantee" out there. You read on here about cheap rigs having problem with there frame not Excel. With 33' or less Excel's frame is so strong that you can hang a 1,000 lb. bike off the back. We looked at Excel before we got a HitchHiker. http://www.excelrvs.com/5th-wheels HitchHiker: We worked full time on the road for 7 years & lived in a HitchHiker. Why we chose a HitchHiker over Excel, 100 gal. water. We moved every 2/4 days & up North it is sometimes hard to find water in winter, we once had to go to WalMart to get water when it was -10 out side. Also with the 33LK we could live in it with the slides in if it was going to snow & we had to travel next day, did not like cleaning snow off top of slides. Yes HitchHiker will take the cold also. Now that we are retired & don't move every 2/4 days we now have a 363DA HH. We took our old rig in to Chanute for some work, grandkids are in Kansas. Wife saw the 363 & fell in love with the 5'counter top in the kitchen, & bath room of the 010. http://www.nuwa.com/ Arctic Fox: I do not know a lot about them but are made in the NW & are like a Subaru you never here anything bad about them that says a lot. Also if you are looking for a little smaller & cheaper rig than Execl & HH I would take a long hard look at Arctic Fox. http://www.northwoodmfg.com/ All three are small family owned & take pride in what they build. If you have time take a trip & take a Plant Tour & see how they are made as you are spending a lot of money. Excel & HH are made in Kansas a little over 5 hr. from each other, Arctic Fox is made in Northeastern Oregon in La Grande. red

RE: Anyone out there use ride-on in your tires?

I try to check my tires every time I get in my truck when pulling that is how I found the nails in three tires. Now my G614 lost tread on one did not go flat & had two blow up. The first one that blew up took out the valve out of the tire in front of it & before I could get stopped it was trash. How I got the Hankook tires As I said I had two flats so called GS road service the first tire guy would only bring out a E tire so we did not see eye to eye. I called GS again next guy would not get G614 but said he would get Hankook F19 750X16 14ply which is same as G. At the time I had never heard of Hankook tires, but I am in the middle of no where & 2 1/2 hr. from the tire shops GS is calling. I need two tires & if I did not take the second tire guy do not know if I would get a third. We set along the road for 5 hr. the way it was just glad we lost them in AM, it was summer time & a beautiful day in the ozarks. When the last G614 blew I had around 40,000 miles & would have replaced them in 5K more. The first two Hankooks, one was the tire that I did not check after we ate & it went flat by the time I stopped it was trash, on the last trip before I traded her off. They had around 80,000 miles & had at least half the tread on the tire. We worked 7 years on the road & most of the jobs were for 2 days. We put 100,000 on our 33 LK Premier HH a great rig. red Looks like we kind of got a little of track. Any way I know biker that use ride-on & like it so think I am going to try it.

Anyone out there use ride-on in your tires?

On our last rig had GY G614 tires on it when we got it. Never again! Had two blow up & one lost tread but never went flat also the one's that did not have problems did not wear good at all. I check my tires often & found 3 nails or screws. Replaced with Hankook F19 750X16 14ply 10 times better tire. I did have a flat & lost one it but that was my fault as I did not check my tires after we stopped for lunch. Now our new rig has 215X75X17.5 H rated tires. If I need a new tire will most likely have to be trucked in as there are not a lot of these tires out there. Have not had a problem. But with the problems we had with the G614 I guess I am a little gun shy. Do not want to pay big bucks for a tire pressure monitor system. I am thinking of using Ride-On Tire Sealant & Balancer. I know a few guys that will not ride there bike with out it in there tires. I like what I am reading about it. http://www.ride-on.com/ So I would like to know if anyone out there is useing ride-on & if so how do you like red

RE: Do folks actually carry passengers in their fifth-wheels?

Francesca I think this is what you are looking for it breaks all the info down. http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/811396.pdf Where I got the 27 kids came from "California School Bus Accident Attorney" http://www.ehlinelaw.com/pages/3338/school-bus-accident-law.htm it has a little info but I think what you are looking for is the top one. red

RE: Do folks actually carry passengers in their fifth-wheels?

Well you made me do my home work. Approximately 27 school aged children die in school bus accidents every year. Seven of these are passengers in a school bus and twenty are pedestrians. Of these twenty pedestrians, fourteen are killed by school buses and the other six are killed by other vehicles involved in a school bus accident. More than one half of all pedestrian fatalities involve a child between the ages of five and seven. So it looks like you are right as kids are twice a likely to be ran over & killed by a bus than while riding in one.

RE: Do folks actually carry passengers in their fifth-wheels?

You ever watch old WWII moves? The US military had 5th wheel busses back in WWII to move GI around, I have seen them in several moves. Have I road in our 5th wheel? Yes but only a few times & only when we had worked all day had 12+ hr. drive & wanted to get home for a holiday or some such thing the next day. We are retired now & I do not have to rush anymore so have not been back there in a long time, & like I said only did it a few times. A few year back when I 40 in OK was not in very good shape & I knew when we got to OK as I came off the bed. I told DW to pull over as my sleep was over so I got back in the truck. Just for thought - Do you think it is safer for you kids, grandkids, or great grandkids that ride in a school bus with NO SEAT BELTS are safer than it is for you to ride in your 5th wheel?

RE: water in fuel

I had a 05 6.0 F350 & I found that at International they have a SS easly to use replacement for that, what was it a nylon 6 MM allen drain plug that was hard to get to with diesel fuel running down your arm in the frame fuel filter. It made it a lot easier to drain that fuel filter. Just trying to be helpfull. So make life easy, go to International & get the replacement for the drain plug. I would drain the water/fuel out of my filter & never had a problem with an injector. Still do every 3th tank. red # Ford part number: 6E7Z-9C082-A # International part number: 2589259C91

LED light over door

We have a 4" orange bug light over the door in our rig. I am looking at replacing it with a small motion detector LED light. Will the LED light attract bugs? I do have a large round security light a little farther up our rig. But it will cost around twice as much to replace the large round security light with a large round motion detector light then replace the bulb with an LED. I do not want bugs hanging around my light over the door. Anyone tried a LED light & do you have bugs around it? red

RE: New Fifth Wheel Owner/ TIme for Upgrades???

First thing you need to do is check your tires & see how old they are. Do you still have the original tires if so they are now 6/7 years old. If they are the original tires you need new tires I would get LT tires as I would not put ST tires on a manure spreader. Now Michelin Rib's are one of the best if not the best tire out there. But unless you are going to put 100K+ on your rig they will still look like new when you run out of time. I have 50K on the rib,s on my Dodge & they look like 50% rubber still on the tires. You can get a BFGoodrich Commercial which is a good tire for half the price of a rib. Not trying to tell what tire to get, just do your home work & see how people like there tires & then get a good tire. Now when you get your tires check out Ride-On Tire Protection System http://www.ride-onshop.com/Products-AUTO_and_SUV.html Always, always check your tire air pressure before you travel. With that said & a good tire that is not out of date & with ride-on in your tire your chance of a flat or blow out is nil. satellite system - I do not think I would put a dish on a rig again. There are some great automatic portable satellite dish's out there now. So I would get an automatic portable satellite dish as they cost less & you can park under a tree & you satellite dish will still work! You can use a tripod & 9 out of 10 times it does not take long to find a satellite but on the 10's time you can't buy that satellite with a $10,000 bill. well I could not, I would just have to walk away for a while, then "most" of the time I could find that satellite. X-chock & or Roto-Choks will do the same thing, but I think if you do your home work you will find more people like the Roto-choks but then they have been around longer. We went on the road full time in 03 & the only chock's we have are a pair of black hard rubber chocks. That I drilled a hole in one side, then put a 3' rope in to make it easy to pull out. Only found them at Northen tool & I only use them when I park on a hill. I guess we have sea legs so never got between the wheel chocks, know some folks who will not park with out them. red

RE: Exhaust brake

One more thing the jake works great with out our rig. Have a auto. But hook up to our 15,000 lb 5er & she dose not slow down a lot unless I down shift & I have had go down to 2nd a lot. RPM's drop & it just does not slow down. red

RE: Exhaust brake

When I got our 07 5.9 auto 3500 had them put the jake on. The vacuum pump just went out at 93,000. Dodge wants a little over $1,000 to replace the pump. Cummins want $500 replace the pump. That said today I would get the pacbrake as they brake better at lower RPM & you get a air pump. Have a auto & when pulling our 15,000 lb 5er it does not slow me down at low rpm if I do not down shift, have had to down shift all the way down to 1st before to slow it down. red

RE: Jake brake not working on 5.9 07 Dodge

Every time I talk to someone I am told something different some say 1 year 12,000 some say 3 years 36,000 but no one has said 5 years 100,000 miles. I got 4 1/2 years & 93,000 so I think I am SOL. Well Cummins called me back and right at $500 installed, half of what Dodge wants. Now I have to think what am I going to do. If I stay with Jake & it last 50,000 or less I will be very unhappy with my self for staying with Jake & throwing good money after bad. But the one I have lasted 4 1/2 & 90,000+. I plan on keeping my Dodge 10 more years. I will most likely keep the jake but. I do need to do some research on pacbrake before I do anything. red

RE: Jake brake not working on 5.9 07 Dodge

That is the same pump I have. Have called Cummins & they have not called back with a price. We are at Quartzsite went to the rv show & before I pay the Dodge dealer $800 for the pump & not sure if $200 or $300 to replace. I will replace with a pacbrake the show price $200 off & I talked they down $100 more or for $1325 & they do not lose brakeing power when the RPM goes down. They claim going down a 8% grade slowing from 50 mph down to 20 mph they will hit 20 mph 1500 ft. less or 5 football fields shorter. So waiting to hear form Cummins before I do anything.

RE: Jake brake not working on 5.9 07 Dodge

Doing a serch on here I found out that when the pump is going out it has oil around it. Well when they were fixing the oil leaks back home there was oil on the pump. When we go down here there was black oil on the intake manifold. So that tell me that the pump is bad. Anyone out there replace the pump your self? The Dodge dealer wants $800 red

RE: Jake brake not working on 5.9 07 Dodge

Jake is the authorized exhaust brake for Dodge covered by Dodge warranty so when I bought the truck I said I wanted the Jake barke. So Dodge put it on before I picked up the truck. As I said it has a vaccum pump. But I do not hear a leak at the pump, or at the brake, but I do not have the best hearing. red

Jake brake not working on 5.9 07 Dodge

Took our 5.9 07 3500 Dodge over for an oil change a few weeks back. They said that the rear seal was leaking it has a little over 90K on it so Dodge is paid for it. We were heading south on the 27th so on the 26 stopped by my mother to say bye. Well there was oil on her drive way. So called Dodge dealer up & he could not get me in untill the 29th so I said ok as I wanted it done before we left. We did not get it out untill the 6th we hooked up & took off. Well we got to NM going down a hill pulled the jake out - nothing! To the best of my knowledge the jake brake was working when we took it in. Is there any thing they could have left lose while removing & replacing the pan, oil pump gasket & any thing else that would leak? Also I now have a little oil on the intake manifold, that we never had before, it looks to be comming from around the power steering pump but the vaccum pump for the Jake brake is just above the power steering pump. We are in Quartzsite & there is not a car wash in town that I have found but we are going to Blythe this afternoon so will clean oil off then. red
