RE: Our First Fifth Wheel

Devores,
At the risk of being too nosy, can I ask what your unit cost? We are looking at the KZ products on line and will be traveling to an RV show in Louisville. I'd like to have a number in my head so that I can compare it to the "once in a lifetime, show special, deal of the day." If you'd rather not post publicly, you can PM me or email to j_a_wolfeATyahoodotcom.
Thanx,
Jim

RE: Sanitizing Fresh Water System

That's the way I do it with the following add-on. I add enough bleach to the hose to get the ratio I want, fill the tank, run the faucets and then topp off the tank again. I like sanitizing everything I can since I had a bad experience once.
Good luck,
Jim

RE: Our First Fifth Wheel

While planning for retirement, we looked into full-timing and wanted a unit that would serve our needs reliably. Like you, I had no idea what was out there, let alone what I wanted. I used this board and others and decided our next unit will be a KZ. They seem to go the extra mile for customers. Be aware, all things mechanical break. Your brand new, expensive, top of the line land yacht will break. I have no problem with that so long as the manufacturer holds up their end. KZ seems to do that as do several others.
Jim
P.S. Old RV'ers are just as hard headed and opinionated as the rest of the world so I try to throw out the best and worst reviews and go by the average.
Have fun,
Jim

RE: Why FW over TT and Why or Why not?

We went from a 26'TT to a 35' 5er and what I noticed seems to be a little different than most. First, the TT towed like a dream. I'd have to keep an eye on the speedo so I wouldn't creep up over 70. Wherever I pointed the truck, the trailer followed. The ride quality in the tow vehicle was way better since there was no "chuggle" or "hunting". If all you want to do is go forward, fast, then the TT works. However, there will come a time when you have to back up. The 37' 5er backs into holes I'd never be able to get the 26' TT into. Taller ceilings and increased storage play a big part in why I'll not go back to a TT. Earlier posters were right in saying a lot of what works for you depends on what you do with the camper.

RE: Another 5th wheel and truck question

Although I recommended a dually in my post above, let me say that I tow a Montana with a Dodge 3500 with SRW. For me, the decision was whether the possible increase in stability would be offset by my embarrasment at McDonald's drive through while retrieving my fenders...
I'm just sayin...

RE: Another 5th wheel and truck question

If you're talking about new trucks, I'll side with the majority and go with the 3500's. I don't think there's much difference, towing capacity wise between the SRW and the duallies. In fact, you lose a couple of hundred pounds of cargo capacity to offset the weight of the extra wheels. That being said, the difference between 4 tire contact patches and 6 may someday mean the difference between maintaining control and not. If you can afford it, get the dually.

RE: RV show

We're trying to decide whether to go north to the RV show in Dayton or south to Louisville. Has anyone ever been to the Louisville show and can you recommend it. I know Cincinnati has a travel, boat and RV show every year and it turns out to be a boat show with a couple of RV's thrown in for effect. I don't want to travel 2 hours to be disappointed. Any suggestions?

Jim

RE: Time for a new one; suggestions?

Appreciate everyone's input thus far. All well intended advice to be sure. We're just at the very beginning of our "due diligence". We have started getting the must have, like to have and it would be nice to have features list together and are somewhat surprised that our tastes seem to be toward mid-range units rather than top end units. We definitely don't want a Cheapo Deluxo camper that's more work than fun to live with. By the same token, we're not going to get something that will be a constant worry if it gets dirty. Oh well, we're having fun just thinking about it.
Thanx again,
Jim

RE: Raven by Sunnybrook? Anyone got opinions?

The floor plan we're looking for is a little different. I found one at a semi-local dealer I'm going to go see but it's loaded differently than I would like. No need for a fake fireplace and a pop-up TV...
More interested in owner reports of build quality, fit and finish, that sort of thing. I know they've recently become part of Winnebage so I'm curious to see what changes will occur as well.
Thanx,
Jim

We're just starting to look for a replacement for our Montana and came across these. I'd never seen one so I thought I'd ask around before I go to much trouble to locate and visit a dealer.

RE: Time for a new one; suggestions?

We were in the market several years ago and did the factory tours, lived in the forums and interrogated owners in every campground wherever we went. Bought a used Montana which has served us well but also pointed out the difference between "need" and "want". Since this will likely be our last RV purchase till we retire, we're going to be a little pickier. Just starting the process and trying to get a feel for current offerings.

Time for a new one; suggestions?

There's this familiar itch starting in the back of my head since I noticed the RV show schedule for this Spring. While I plan on doing all of my due diligence, I'd be open to anyone's positive or negative impressions of the current state of the art in RV's. We're looking for an upper scale unit more than a camper. Slides are a must and I cook a lot so a decent kitchen/prep area is important. My ideal unit would entertain 6, feed 4 and sleep 2. Anything beyond that is gravy. Opinions?
Thanx,
Jim

RE: Towing 5th Wheel with broken axle?

As an ending to the thread, let me say we're home safe and sound. Because of the height of the trailer and the restrictions in the area we were stuck in, a trailer tow was not in the offing. The failure in the suspension was a broken spring on one side and a broken frame mount on the other side so a temporary block wouldn't do the trick either. Having an on-board generator, hand tools and a place to eat and sleep, I decided to do a field repair myself. I bought a small welder, torch set and a pair of new springs and went to work. A day and a half later, we were on the road again, stronger than stock. The added bonus of some new toys made the experience less annoying. Thanks to all who offered positive suggestions.

Towing 5th Wheel with broken axle?

Has anyone ever had to get a 5er towed with a broken axle. We have a broken spring on one side and a broken weld on the other side of the same axle and AAA can't figure out how to get it to a repair shop. Any ideas?
Thanx,
Jim

Suburban Range Knob

The piezo starter knob broke on my Suburban SR3 range. Suburban tells me that this knob is obsolete and is unavailable. They offer no alternate solutions and were pretty much useless when asked for a resolution. Has anyone used an aftermarket knob that will fit this range?
We're about a day or two away from a trip to the appliance parts store for a generic knob and a tube of epoxy...

Jim
