RE: Long/Heavy TT owners and towing

I have the same weight trailer and tow it with my 1/2 ton Tundra...IMO it's not your truck, it's your hitch set up. I spent quite some time adjusting and fine tuning my Husky WDH - height, hitch ball angle and weight arm height all factor into getting the perfect tow. Now that I have mine dialed in I can drive with one finger on the wheel - or even let go of the wheel when being passed by a semi at 70 mph on the interstate (I have a youtube video of this)...no sway, no porposing, just smooth easy towing.

Awning roller? Anyone use it?

Wondering if the $10 awning roller is worth it? Does it work or does it actually wear the awning more than the door ever would?
I usually tilt my awning (high side towards my door) to prevent it from rubbing, but if this does what it says it might be worth it.
Are there any other options out there?

RE: 2012 Forest River V-Cross Platinum 32VBHS opinions please

De-winterized and slept in ours last night (driveway)...the kids were excited to get back in it. Very much love this trailer - has everything we need and it works perfectly. Really happy with the way we optioned it from the factory, wouldn't change a thing!

Underbelly & insulation question for TT

I have a 2012 rig and the last time I went camping (30-40 degrees) I noted the floors being really cold. My camper is not advertised as having a 'cold weather package' and as I understand it, probably just the roof and walls are minimally insulated.
I am considering dropping the underbelly cover and insulating the floor - then reinstalling the cover. Does anyone have experience with this project?
Thoughts?

RE: Question about towing and Puma/Tundra

I tow a 37' 8,000 TT, no rockies but western NC mountains are no sweat...the TRD supercharger, E rated tires and my WDH make it soooooooo nice it's like the trailer isn't there sometimes. 10 mpg on the interstate if I hold 65 mph. My longest tow was 1500 miles round trip NC to Disney campground.
Enjoy your new camper!
Ps -buy the supercharger!

RE: New TT with F150 towing

Not to sound like a broken record, but I would spend some time making small changes to your WDH set up - it took me 3 adjustments to find the perfect sweet spot where my truck drives like the trailer isn't even there. Small changes will make a big difference!
You want to see that your trailer is either level, or just slightly nose low. You also want the head (ball) of your hitch to be angled back toward the trailer a few degrees. You want to see the front of your tow vehicle not squat much, but almost equal the rear tire squat when the trailer is loaded on the tongue. (measure center of wheel to wheel well)
Regarding inflation - I run E rated tires - made a huge difference in tow comfort because of the side wall stiffness and ability to run up to 85 psi (I run 65 psi in both TV and trailer)

RE: My 2012 camper is discontinued? Really? Already?!

I've got nothing but great things to say about the V-nose and the camper in general. In fact this V weighs 1k more than my last camper (6500 vs 7500) and I get the same tow mileage. The V also provides a huge master bedroom closet, and conceals the battery and propane inside front compartments out of the weather. Clean look and very functional. As for interior layout, if you are interested in anything particular I would be happy to post up pictures.
Here are a few I have:

My 2012 camper is discontinued? Really? Already?!

2012 Forest River V-Cross Platinum 32VBHS - can't find a hint of information about it anywhere, not even on the Forest River web page.
I wonder what happened!
FYI - this is a double slide unit with rear bunkroom (sleeps 10 if you fold the table and open the sofa air bed) fairly popular family floorplan I would think.

RE: Looking for a curbside dinette floorplan

See the camper in my sig (Forest River V-Cross 32 VBHS) we were in the same situation as you...took us three campers (pop up, tt with small bunks then this one) to figure it out....love this lay out which gives the kids and adults just what you need (including the outdoor kitchen)

RE: What is the REAL fuel economy savings with an aero nose TT?

Weighs 1000 lbs more than my last camper and I get 9 mpg, essentially the same as my last one...plus I get a huge closet in the master bedroom.

RE: Awesome trip to Asheville NC - some things I learned

"I bought two 6 ton bottle jacks (small and nicely portable) Put one under each frame rail by each set of tires...made a big difference in trailer stability - had 4 adults and 2 kids in the trailer all week....worked great!"
I'm not sure I understand? Do you mean a screw jack? If so, I can't imagine it reaching the frame rails? How much jacking can you do on the frame rails? I was thinking of doing the same thing but putting the jack under the point where the two leaf springs come together.
Each of the 6 ton bottle jacks has 17" of extension. I wouldn't want to jack up that high on a small diameter shaft....what I did was block under each jack with 6x6 blocks that I carry, plus one additional peice of 2x4 block between the frame and jack shaft. I probably only had 5" or so of jack extension when it was in place.

RE: Awesome trip to Asheville NC - some things I learned

Yep, they allow 'real' campfires at Lake Powahatan, fire rings at every site and an endless supply of fallen wood.
I prefer the ease and convenience of the propane fire ring; my kids roast two marshmallows, sit for 10 minutes and then they're gone.
No smoke, no smell, decent heat & light and it's super quick and easy.
I saw my neighbor douse his post rain storm fire wood with gasoline in an attempt to get it lit........I turned a knob and had fire.
Sure, a 'real fire' is great, but having an option is cool with me.

RE: Awesome trip to Asheville NC - some things I learned

Sounds like you had a great time, in spite of the few problems.:)
It's a beautiful area up there....it's on our list for next year!
I've been to Campfire Lodgings (top of the mountain with view) and now this place.......if I had to pick again I would definitely go with Lake Powahatan..same distance to downtown (about 10 mins). The other 'main campgounds' in the area get some iffy reviews.

RE: Awesome trip to Asheville NC - some things I learned

Congrats on a great weekend.
I know on those cool nights to leave the roof vents open and you'll have a lot less dampness inside.
Ya know I was going to try that, but then I figured all my heat would just go up the vent.

Awesome trip to Asheville NC - some things I learned

First the good stuff -
1. Camped at Bent Creek Experimental Forest - Lake Powahatan in Asheville, NC - absolutely perfect campground, especially if you like to mt bike and hike. Can't say enough about this place, it was just what camping should be!
2. Bought "The little Red Campfire" propane portable campfire.....awesome, this thing is right on!
3. Extendable shower curtain from Camping World is the best bathroom accessory you can buy
3. Adjusted my Husky WDH (this is my second time towing my new trailer) Made an adjustment to the head angle (more downward) and lowerd one more hole on my weight arms....holy cow the trailer towed so perfectly that my father (who rode with me) commented that he could hardly tell the camper was behind us. Absolutely no push / pull when the big rigs passed...I mean darn perfect towing 65-70 mph.
4. I bought two 6 ton bottle jacks (small and nicely portable) Put one under each frame rail by each set of tires...made a big difference in trailer stability - had 4 adults and 2 kids in the trailer all week....worked great!
Now the other stuff -
1. My hot water heater spark plug decided to arc across a rivit instead of the two leads...ended up putting some moldable insulation over the rivit as a temp fix (which worked) - local RV supply didn't have the correct spark rod. (the porcelin is cracked)
2. Condensation...temp was 38-42 at night, made for the usual condensation on the single pane windows...but also noted that anywhere a window was there was areas of dampness. I should have sprung for the double panes
3. Porch light(s) quit...OHM'd the switch, checked both fixtures and bulbs...can't figure it out. It's obviously fed from somewhere besides the switch..the dealer can figure it out because it looks like the bottom insulation has to be pulled to get any further.

RE: Really Torn on my Tundra #'s PLEASE HELP

In my last travel trailer I stopped at a certified scale, if I recall correctly I was 17,300 GCVW - within Tundra spec. That was with my unloaded weight TT of 6800#
I recently bought a bigger TT, 7800# unloaded. Took it to Disney this past summer 1400 miles round trip.
Granted I have a TRD supercharger but the truck performed flawlessly.
I would tow my new TT without the supercharger and feel perfectly happy with it (only in a slower kind of way)
Moral of the story, I would add 10 ply E rated tires (I run mine at 65 psi) to your Tundra - it was the second best money I ever spent on mine...made a huge difference in ride quality and side flex.
Other than the supercharger, that's the only mod to my truck I've done besides cosmetic junk.
You're good to go in the Tundra with the TT you describe...go enjoy it.

RE: Ford F150 or Toyota Tundra???

Not only the Tundra - but the Tundra with a TRD supercharger in it. You will grin ear to ear and tow effortlessly. The only addition that I feel is necessary is E rated tires.

RE: Noticed a problem with my new rig today...thoughts?

I sent my pictures to the dealer and they are working on an assessment. It's not IMO delamination because there is no lifting of the filon or bubbling...nothing separating the material...it's more of a split seam type of crack, although there is no seam and nothing there to push outward on it in the first place....perhaps the peice is too tight and weather variations caused it to crack. Sounds like the dealer is showing some interest to make it right. Keep you posted.

Noticed a problem with my new rig today...thoughts?

Front left of V-nose has a vertical fracture...very small width and about 3' or so for now, but I assume it will get worse. This happend while the rig was sitting in my driveway...only been on one trip with it and I detailed when I got back...no issues. Today I washed it and was prepping for an upcoming trip and noticed the problem.
The filon has hairline cracks, but I can't understand why. Looking at it you would think there must be something pushing hard on it from the inside (stud) but it's quite flexible when you push on it. I've been on the roof (but not today) and inspected the seals...didn't see any issues. No water leaks. The crack starts from the bottom and goes up.
I imagine I'll have to send some pictures to the dealer and see what they say. I've attached some pics, but it's impossible to see the cracks...only the 'bulge'. Look closely at the graphic and you'll see the 'crease'...then work your way down.
Anyone have an issue like this before? My only thought (besides I need to double check seals (which I doubt is the culprit) is that the peice is too tight? I'm at a loss for this one.
