RE: Check the roof on new trailers

First thing I thought of when I saw that was some blew out of it. Second thought was the movie Alien.
Maybe some extra terestrial got trapped under the caulking and it tore its way out?

RE: Please wash your hands

I tried wearing gloves when dumping, but then it became difficult to hold my sandwich. :B
You must be the guy I saw the other day dumping while eating a sandwich. (No joke! I actually saw that!) And he would switch the sandwich from left to right hand and back as needed to complete the job of handing the stinky slinky.

RE: Arctic Fox Dome In Cabover

I offer no advise on cutting holes, but I put a MaxAir fan in my 5er and what I did was get a piece of molding from the local hardware store. I cut it to the width of the ceiling and cut a grove in the under side of it. I then ran the wires across the ceiling inside of it. I also painted it white. When done, it looked like it was there from the factory (sorry - no pix)

RE: New to Dinghy Towing and got a question

I've always thought it to be a good idea to design a toad braking system that could use the input from a standard brake controller to provide proportional toad braking. Then again, I've always thought it would be a good idea to have design and build standards for toad braking systems (like every other braking and towing component made) and some independant test data for these systems. We as consumers pretty much have to rely on manufacturer claims and reviews on forums, like this one.
Hmmm...maybe I should go invent one?

2005 Jeep Liberty Question

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty and I am looking at towing 4 down. I am researching different tow bars and braking systems. I am also reading the owners manual.
The manual says
Shifting Into Neutral (N)
Use the following procedure to prepare your vehicle for recreational towing.
1. Depress brake pedal.
2. Shift transmission into N (Neutral).
3. Shift transfer case lever into N (Neutral).
4. Start engine.
5. Shift automatic transmission into D (Drive) or manual transmission into any forward gear.
6. Release brake pedal and ensure that there is no vehicle movement.
7. Shut the engine OFF and place the ignition key into the unlocked OFF position.
8. Shift automatic transmission into P (Park) or ensure manual transmission is in any forward gear.
9. Apply parking brake.
10. Attach vehicle to the tow vehicle with tow bar.
11. Release parking brake.
ok - I can handle that.
then the manual reads:
Shifting Out Of Neutral (N)
Use the following procedure to prepare your vehicle for normal usage.
1. Shift transmission into N (Neutral).
2. Turn engine off.
3. Shift transfer case lever to desired position.
4. Shift automatic transmission into P (Park).
5. Start engine.
6. Shift automatic transmission into D (Drive) or manual transmission into any forward gear.
Back up the turnip truck! The engine is already off!!! In between "Shifting into Neutral" and "Shifting Out Of Neutral" I have been towing the jeep for quite a distance. And the engine wasnt running.
I called Jeep for clarification and they said talk to your authorized Jeep mechanic. So I decided to go to a higher authority.
Should I start the engine before shifting the transmission into neutral? Y'alls $0.02 would be greatly appriciated.

RE: New to Dinghy Towing and got a question

Portscanner:
Here's another response that doesn't answer your question: Ready Brake users apparently like them becasuse they're simple.
Just because it is simple doesnt mean it is bad. As one great engineer once said: "The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain."
Good luck getting your (original) brake controller question answered.
I was interested in the alternatives, and I sure got a lot of feedback in that department!
Read Sticky One and Sticky Two at the top of this discussion area. You will learn much more that you think you already know by reading them.
Went through them twice already - gonna do it one more time to make sure it all sunk in!
Lots of supporting documentation from the many satisfied users who frequent this forum and other RV forums. And in the RV field, about the only other supporting documentation you are going to find is dealers and manufacturers blowing their own horns. So when you find many happy customers praising the accolades of a product around here, you know it is well worth it.
Valid points!

RE: New to Dinghy Towing and got a question

I don't have a toad yet. When I get one I will use This brake system. ReadyBrake seems simple, reliable, effective and realtively inexpensive.
Wouldnt that be activated when running the exhaust brake down hill and cause the toad's brakes to burn up?
On edit - I see the manufacturer's web site says it wont, but I would be interested in supporting documentation from some other source.

New to Dinghy Towing and got a question

Looks like I am going to get a 2005 Jeep Liberty 4x4 that is in very good shape and I realized I could use that as a toad. I started researching all the braking systems and I found they are activated by:
* the brake lights
* inertial
* surge
* the air brakes on the MH
* the hydraulic brakes on the MH
* a combination of the above
Is there one out there that will tie into the truck's brake controller (as in a brake controller that is used with 5th wheel) ? It seems to be that would be a no brainer, but then again, motor homes probably dont have a brake controller as I rarely see them pulling 5'ers - but I have seen quite a few pulling large trailers that I would expect would have electric brakes.
I am trying to figure out the best performance/price/ease of install etc etc system out there for my application.

RE: Personal Question $$$

I moved from the finance club to the cash club.
Sold the 5er about 2 years ago - funds from the sale paid off the note and used the remainder to buy the TC. Havent looked back.
Street value of TC - (guess) $5K
Value to DW, the dogs and I - priceless

Ditto on the traps.
You may also want to look around for one of these.
I had one that gave me fits with stinks in the camper.

RE: Vacuum for RV

Used to use the bagless Dirt Devil until the DW gave it to her son. She replaced it with a cheap electric stick from K-Mart...It barely picks-up dust.
I replaced her and the vacuum with a rather large albeit inexpensive bagless Bissell vacuum.
Uhhhh....not sure what you did there.

RE: Our gurls need help getting in and out of the TT

I know I am late to the party - but I got this for free and the dogs love it.
http://www.beaglenews.com/images/dogramp.jpg
It is a slide from a playset that was going to be thrown away. I put astroturf on it for traction. It is very stiff. Supposed to be rated up to 250 lbs. I drilled two small holes to put bunge cords on it to keep it from sliding away from the camper, but the design of the foot bites in and keeps it from sliding. It only took one guided trip up and down it with our britany who has hip displasia and he was sold on it. We had tried some other solutions - none of them worked with him.
