RE: Help --- Looking for a bottle jack

Harbor Freight. Inexpensive, works great. They have various sizes. phillip

RE: Spring Hanger question

Yep, then the lower holes in the shackled will help a bit. Phillip

RE: Spring Hanger question

If your spring hangers have two holes, to lower the RV, the springs would need to be in the "top" hole of the hanger - the hole closet to the frame. Many brands of RVs have 2 holes in the hangers to help in getting a level ride. We just finished lowering the springs to the hole closet to the ground on our Cameo fiver to raise it. It raised the ground clearance about 1.5 - 2 inches. It is not that hard because we have the Big Foot leveling system which raises all 4 tires off the ground. 2 jack stands and a bottle jack are necessary. About a 4-5 hour job. Also, a good time to install a wet bolt kit if you don't have one. Good luck, Phillip

RE: Rust on Kingpin... Any Worry?

I have a Pull Rite Super Glide and use nothing but Slip Plate Graphite spray. I spray the king pin before and after each trip as well as all the moving parts of the hitch. It is s dry graphite spray and the only thing recommended by the manufacturer (Pullrite). Anyway, I have yet to ever see rust or any signs of it forming anywhere I have sprayed the lube. Plus, it does not attract dirt or make a gritty surface. ust my 2 cents. Phillip

RE: Got rid of the bombs

We had BFGoodrich Commercial TA tires on our Outback Sydney fiver for the four years we owned it. Never an issue. I will say that your trailer will experience a firmer ride due to the stiffer sidewall compared to the ST tires. However, its worth it for the peace of mind you'll have with the BFGs. Safe travels, Phillip

RE: BAGGAGE DOOR PISTONS

I was looking arond on a the RV show this past January comparing the struts on the baggage doors of various fifth wheels. The 60lb struts seemed the most common. phillip

RE: MorRyde rubber shear spring condition

Yeah, exactly what I thought! Talked to Mor Ryde today and they are going to send me a replacement for the one that I have pix of. The other one is OK - just a slight "cut" in it that is well within the margins for wear. I still think that is odd for such a new coach with such few miles. Anyway, Andrew at MorRyde said it is called bonded seperatoin (ya think?) and it is very rare. He is enclosing a return label for the defective spring. phillip

RE: MorRyde rubber shear spring condition

"Yours looks pretty bad" I think is an understatement"! The 4 pix are only of the one on the left side. The one one the right side is not near as bad, however, it is starting to split as well. I will phone Mor Ryde in the morning and see what they say. Again, this fifh wheel was purchased new in Sept 2011 and has only been towed about 35 miles including delivery from IN to FL. It really makes me wonder why this happened so soon and I what the real longevity of the springs will be. I wonder how many folks are pulling the fivers with shear springs like this? Thanks, Phillip

RE: MorRyde rubber shear spring condition

Yeah, I'm not feeling like this is normal at all! The rig is not even 2 years old and has less than 3500 miles on it. I'm not real thrilled with having to do this again as I just got it all put back together yesterday from the wet bolt kit install. Is it unsafe to tow like this? At what point should it not be towed before replacement? Phillip I would call Gary Wheeler @ MorRyde, get his e-mail address and send him the photos. He could best tell you how to proceed. I'm not certain, but badly torn/delaminated shear block might be iffy to tow on. Gary is extremely helpful and customer oriented. I met him at the Tampa show a couple years ago, but darn it, I can't find his business card or I would have posted his contact info for you. Thnaks very much for the info. I will be on the phone with them tomorrow. We have a 12 hour round trip planned for end of the month and need to get this done prior, I think. Very busy, however, as we are moving to a new home. Hopefully, Mor Ryde will take care of us with this issue. Thanks, Phillip

RE: MorRyde rubber shear spring condition

I also have the same model of Cameo as yours. The trailer I traded in had the wet kit installed. My problem tires would have to be rremoved to get to all the zeros. My kit also came from MorRide. Can you get to all the zeros. My Cameo has Mor Ride suspension and pin box. Right now I don't think ill install a wet kit. I know the trailer pulls like a dream. We put the grease zerks inside which will require getting under the RV. However, it will not be a problem to grease any of the fittings at all by doing it this way. Phillip

MorRyde rubber shear spring condition

We did the wet bolt kit from Mor Ryde today on our 2011 Carriage Cameo 31ksls. We took delivery of the uinit in September 2011 and it was built in Jan 2011. The upgrade took a longer than we thought it would! Having done it now, could have done a few things differently if ever had to do it again. The directions could be more specific in regard to those things. Anyway, its done. The hardest part was the 4 leaf spring hanger zerk bolts. One of them did not grip in the frame spring hanger hole like it should have. One went in fairly simple and two of them were a PIA as they did not align perfectly making it difficult to get the bolt completely through the hole. I did pre-grease the assembly druing the installation. Tomorrow I will do a grease job via the zerks before letting the rig down off the Big Foot jacks. Also, we took this opportunity to slightly raise the coach by using the lower nagner holes. One disconcerting thing I found was splitting of the MorRyde rubber shear spring which I have taken pix of and will call MorRyde next week to discuss with them. The one of the coach left is featured in the pix. the one of the right was very slight. RE: BF Goodrich TA

I had BFGoodrich Commericial T/A on the old fiver for 4 years before trading the rig. They performed great. I could tell the difference as far as a stiffer ride due to the contents of the trailer compared to the ST tires. Didn't mind that, however, due to the peace of mind I had with the tire. I'm about to replace the tires on my Cameo equipped with 7k lbs axles. It has an unloaded weight of just shy of 12k lbs. So I don't want to put a tire on the rig that does not have at least a 3500lb capacity. The Durobombs that came on the rig are 235/85r16 with a 3520 lb capactiy. The highest capacity BFG Commercial T/a in a 16 inch rim is a 265/75r16 with a 3415 lb rating. I have never talked to anyone who has used this tire as a replacement so I don't know if it is really a viable option. Bout the only tire I have found is the Goodyear G614 RST. phillip

RE: Montana 5th wheels

Check the warranties on each brand. Some will not warrant their coaches if used for full time use. pcm

RE: Duro Tire Failure

IF you decide to replace the Duros and keep the 16 inch rim AND go with the Goodyear G614, the best price I have found is about $290 p/tire plus mounting balance and tax. I'm getting the G614 next mnonth. Good luck, Phllip

RE: Goodyear Tires AGAIN Gone Bad

Carriage offerd the Goodyear G614 as an option. The Duro tire has a pretty decent load capacity at a max psi of 85 pounds. The Duro just has a bad reputation and not one I want to take a chance with. I think the G614 is a good option for us on or 12k pound fiver with 7k pound axles. I haven't found another viable option. phillip

RE: Duro Tire Failure

dancoppins, I am a Carriage owner, too. We have a 2011 Cameo with the Duro bombs and I will be changing them out before our Summmer trips to the Goodyear G614 RST tires. I have heard of problems with these tires as well. However, they seem minimal if kept properly inflated and not loaded to the max limits. The tires have a 3750 lb load limit at 110 psi. If you have the Carriage stock aluminum wheels, they are rated for them and there should be not clearance issues as they were a factory option. I understand you neeed for a replacement in a hurry, but like the previous poster, all you have is a short term, quick fix. May I suggest that as soon as you get home sell the Marathons on Craigslist, take a loss, and get the Goodyears. Good luck, Phillip

RE: 5th wheel tire pressure when in storage

I keep the tires inflated to the same pressure always. Between trips, I even keep the tire off the ground with the Big Foot leveling jacks. But I see no need to change the pressure ESPECIALLY if you are not taking the weight off the tires. I don't think it would be good for the tire sidewall. Just my 2 cents. Phillip

RE: Goodyear Tires AGAIN Gone Bad

You may want to look at the Firestone Transforce, I use them on the truck and the 5th wheel. I used with great success BFGoodrich Commercial T/A on our old fiver. It was s much lighter fiver than our current Cameo and they do not make a T/A with a comparable weight capacity of the curent Duro tire on our Cameo. We want to replace the 235/85R16 Duro 16 inch tires with a better tire. However, the Goodyear g614 is the only tire that meets or exceeds the capacity the Goodyear g614 in a 16" rim. The Duro has a 3530lb capacity at 85lbs. The Goodyear has a capacity of 3750lbs. Our rims are rated for 110lbs so the higher pressure of the G614 is not an issue. The Transforce tire best capactiy is 3415lbs in a 265/75r16 at 80lbs. I'm not sure how going to the Transforce would change tread width on the ground or tire diameter which may effect ride height. phillip
