RE: Dang it!!!! Lost my awning yesterday!!

Hey! I have been to Oliver BC!!
We had a family reunion three years ago at Lake Tuc El Nuit. Was a really fun time. Great little RV park there at the lake.
We stayed in the same camp spot that I did when I camped for the very first time at 6 mos old. I am now 42 ;)
Anyway - we had a similar experience of a dramatic wind storm kicking up out of nowhere. Luckily I had no RV damage...but it really blew me away (no pun intended) how quickly and violently the wind kicked up.

RE: Washing the TT

Awesome cleaner available at Family Dollar and Dollar Tree stores. Great for black streaks. DO NOT USE ON THE ROOF!
Uhh...excuse me....it is TOTALLY AWESOME (not just Awesome). ;)
And it is....TOTALLY AWESOME. Especially for removing black steaks.

RE: Looking at used bunkhouse travel trailers.....

Oh Geez....I somehow missed that you are towing with a Toyota Tundra.
I dont have the gumption to look - but I bet every single one of those trailers is *way* too heavy for the Tundra.
I had an F-150 5.4 V8 with tow package (~8000 lbs towing) and I struggled towing my 5000 pound trailer when the truck was full of kids, bikes, gear, etc. etc.
And when I say "struggled" I mean 35 mph max up hills with the engine racing.
I would seriously consider something newer and smaller.

RE: Looking at used bunkhouse travel trailers.....

Well...let's go through it.
'98/'99/'01 is pretty old. Looks like you live in Michigan and so there are COOOOLD winters and HOOOT summers. That kind of weather takes a toll on a TT. Before I bought a TT that old I would want to see some signs that the previous owner was ON TOP OF IT when it came to preservation. Did they winterize every winter? Is there evidence that the seams have been checked and re-sealed? Is there any evidence of cracked or old caulking in the seams?
A 10 year old trailer in Michigan will be on its last legs if the previous owner was not being very diligent about winterizing and keeping water out.
Look for:
* Old looking or cracked caulk in the seems
* Delamination - if it is a fiberglass exterior is there any evidence of warping or bubbling on the outside fiberglass? Look below windows, in the corers, below light fixtures.
* If there appears to be repairs on the TT - why?? Was there leaking? Did they simply do the repair or did they go the extra step to dry out the trailer?
* Check out the rubber on the roof. To me this is the "teeth of the horse". Is it really dirty? Is there lots of sap/pitch deposits? Any cracking? A TT owner that is on top of things will take care of the rubber roof - cleaning it and keeping it healthy. If the rubber roof is heavily stained or looks aged then that tells me that the TT has not been properly cared for.
I would feel better leaning toward the 2003 models...but if properly cared for a '99 trailer can be in much better shape than a 2003 or even a 2009 model.
Hope this helps.

RE: Travel trailer leak question ?

I think there are basically two methods here.
1. Intense - Remove the wall paneling. Allow the insulation and interior of the wall to dry out by placing fans and a dehumidifyer in your trailer. Then, replace the wall paneling and try to match the wall color and wall paper as close as possible.
2. Less intense. Either let if ride knowing that you have stopped the leak and no furhter damage is being done. Or, punch a couple holes wall where the bumps are and blow air into them to dry out the area around the damage.
#1 is what you are *supposed* to do. #2 is what I would likely do.

RE: Wallcovering Pulling Away or Water?!?!

DON"T USE SILICONE CAULK!
Use ProFlexRV
Once you put Silicone caulk on there you will never get it off. Nothing sticks to it - including silicone caulk. If you ever need to repair the seam in the future you will spend HOURS scraping, rubbing, chipping, etc. to get it off.
The previous owner of my TT put it on every seam and it is taking me years to get it all off.

RE: TT stolen

I am a "look at the bright side" kind of guy:
* When a 150 year old fir tree fell on my house doing over $100K worth of damage - Free remodel!!
* When our water pipes broke in our kitchen and destroyed all the hardwood floors of the first floor - Free Brand New Hardwoods!!
* When my wife's car was stolen back in 2000 - New Car!!!
So...hey. Trailer Shopping = FUN! New Trailer Smell! Shopping and having new camping hear - FUN! Those nagging problems with your old trailer - they are now the thieves problem! You gettin' a new one ;)
Insurance hassle, premiums, yeah yeah....most of us only get 2-3 "New Trailer Experiences" in our entire RVing careers. You just got a free one!

RE: Will I be able to tow this??????

You buy that trailer and (like me) you will end up with a new truck 1 year later.
Made the same mistake with a 5000# trailer towing with a F-150.
Sure enough....after 12 months of those miserable trips I bought a 2500HD Diesel.
Before you buy the Trailer, make sure you can afford a new truck ;)

Which Tojan 6v Batteries Do I Want?

I am thinking that I might spend the extra dough to upgrade my battery capacity this year.
I have several questions that maybe you all could help me with:
1. There are about a dozen models of Trojan 6v Batteries for sale out there. Any guidance on a model well suited for TT use?
2. Are there brands that are cheaper but just as good?
3 Other than changing the wire connections, are there any other modifications needed?
4. How much of an improvement can I expect over standard run-of-the-mill 12v batteries (replacing 2 12v with 2 6v)?
Oh...one more. I am thinking I will store them indoors over the winter connected to a battery tender. What about special care during the spring and summer months? I have a battery disconnect. Anything else?
Thanks!

RE: Battery is GONE

By the way (slightly off topic) - keeping your TT hooked into shore power continuously will fry your converter. I used to do that, until I had to replace the converter ;)

I use "Totally Awesome" from the Dollar Tree. 1 bottle, $1 dollar per year and my TT looks as white as a ghost (in a good way) ;)

RE: Removing eternabond

I covered the entire roof of my TT. Vents, seams, everything. Took me an entire weekend.
BUT
I had one of the few bad batches of EB that warped up after just a few weeks.
EB was great - sent me all new tape and tools to repair everything.
Only took me like 90 minutes with a hair dryer to get up all the original tape.
Took me another full weekend to lay it down...again....however ;)

RE: Wall delamination

$100 for a SealTech leak test at just about any RV store. Takes an hour and I got a printout of 4 or 5 different spots that were leaking.
ProFlexRV and I rest easy.
Eternabond on the roof.

RE: Wall delamination

I went through the delam "terror" phase.
I was constantly looking down the side of my trailer thinking I saw some sort of bubbles or warping.
I covered the roof with Eternabond and got a leak test. Once I was fairly confident that the TT wasnt leaking I eventually forgot about delam.
It is only a problem if it is really bad, or if the trailer is still leaking and thus delam is getting worse.
If you are buying a trailer and there are no bad signs of delam then seal it up after you purchase it with Eternabond and ProfexRV (which you should do anyway) and then just dont worry about it.

Interesting floor plan.
I have two boys so I need bunks - and I love the long social table for cards, monopoly, etc.

HEADS UP! Check your spare!

For fun my wife and I took our TT down to Eugene Oregon to spend the night after the Oregon Ducks Football game.
Great game!
However - when we woke up in the morning our driver side rear tire was completely flat.
No problem - right? I have a spare!
So, I remove the FACTORY INSTALLED spare to replace the FACORY INSTALLED flat tire.....
and....
It wont fit. The spare tire has a wheel configured for 6 bolts, and the flat is configured for 5 bolts. The bolt holes didnt line up.
So now it is Sunday....I am kind of hungover (it was also my birhtday Saturday night...so....;))...every tire store I can think of is closed...and I am two hours from home with a trailer I cannot tow.
I threw the flat in the back of my pickup and started to head home with the TT left in the RV spot up on a jack.
LUCKILY - I found a small tire shop on the side of the road and a nice old guy fixed my tire for $15. Saved me $45 for another night at the RV park + $75 in gas + 4 hours of driving back and forth to reclaim my RV.

RE: Help . . . My Trailer is Pregnant!

Yeah.....I think you have a problem with your tank - a big one. I think the water has bypassed the tank (hole? broken stem valve?) and is collected in the covered underbelly.
Drain the water tank and see if the bulge goes away.

RE: Leak discovered on new trailer PLEASE HELP

Dude....you just dropped some serious coin on a NEW trailer.
I would demand a replacement unit. Mold, rot, etc. etc. etc.
You paid for a NEW trailer. Get yourself a NEW trailer.

RE: Bumps forming on interior wall

When I first joined the forum there was an extensive thread where a guy found bumps under his wallpaper.
He had a ton of pictures and covered the entire saga in a long post that has since been deleted.
Long story short - he had a huge gash on his roof where a piece of molding had popped up and water was coming through.
When all was said and done he had dry rot, mold, and delamination issues all through the trailer.
At the end of the day the RV company would not help him because he was out of warranty and because it is the RV owners job to check for those types of issues.
Bottom line - you have a leak, and probably a pretty severe one.
If you get it closed up now and get some drying going on you can probably stop this in its tracks with little damage done....but if it has been leaking for 2+ years you may already be in big trouble.
Sorry!!
