RE: Why steal a truck tailgate?

As was said, they are easy to steal, easy to sell and virtually impossible to identify the owner once stolen.

RE: I still read books, the kind without batteries!

I read from both. If I'm going to be around water (such as canoe camping this past weekend), I take a print book. If it gets wet, it isn't the end of the world. Plus, I still have some older books that are not available on e-book that I reread from time to time.
For me, the biggest advantage to e-books is the ability to change the text size depending on how I need it to be comfortable reading. That and not having a ton of paperbacks to store.

RE: Gun shows???

You can run across deals, but most are not that great. I like to go because it gives me the opportunity to check out many different guns that my local dealers can get, but don't stock. I've been absolutely set on buying a particular gun until I held it at a gun show and realized I didn't like the fit/feel of it. Had I bought it sight unseen, I would not have been happy with the purchase.

RE: Momma's Laptop Screen Gone

The screen is not that difficult to replace. I have a friend who buys used laptops that the screen is gone and replaces them and resells them. The last one he got for $25.00 and put about $80 into it and sold it for $200. The thing that you need to decide is are there other issues with a 4 YO laptop that getting a new one would solve. I would probably look at getting a new one depending on how good the old one was when you got it. If it was an entry level laptop 4 years ago, it probably needs replacing at this point.

RE: Mountain or BMX bike ...

I definately agree with going to a bike shop rather than big box store. I can't tell you how many I've seen at box stores over the years that were not put together correctly. Be prepared to spend a little more, but you definately get more for your money component wise and will most likely be getting a lighter bike in most cases.
We just got my wife a Trek Navigator 3.0 that was mentioned earlier. She loves it. She test rode quite a few similar style bikes before deciding on the Trek, but the moment she rode it, she decided it was the one.

We are fortunate enough to be able to store ours at the house, so no storage charges.
We just got our insurance renewal and it is $148/year.

RE: Camera support after purchase

Doing research to a major upgrade in camera -from point and shoot to a DSLR $$$
Any comments on how a company handled your issue?
On line all I see are complaints,
Ie:
Nikon people "will go to Canon" and the "Canon folks are going to Nikon" because of lack of service.
Thank you, Nancy
I've had a Canon DSLR for a number of years now and have never had a moment’s problem out of it. You very likely will not have any problems with whatever brand you choose as they are all very high quality. I chose Canon because I was already invested in the lens and flashes for it. I don't think you can go wrong with either Canon or Nikon. The others make great products; it is just that they typically don't have the variety of accessories and aftermarket items for them. That may not be an issue for you depending on what you intend to use the cameral for. If I were starting out considering all of the DSLRs out there, I would try to go somewhere that I could try each one that I was interested in and see which is most comfortable for me.
The problem with on-line reviews with almost any product is there is a disproportionate amount of complaints because most people that buy something and it does what it is supposed to and they never have a problem out of it, don't generally take the time to conduct a review. Even if they had a problem out of it but it was handled appropriately, they just don't review in any great number. One option is to go through a local camera shop instead of purchasing on-line and then at least you may have an advocate for you with the manufacturer should you have problems.

RE: Thinking about dumping the landline

We haven't had a landline in about 7 years now and have not thought once about getting it again. I had pushed DW to ditch it for years before she finally gave in. I had already stopped answering it if it rang, because it was never a call we needed or wanted. Anyone that wanted to talk to us called on the cell phone. She finally agreed after we did a 2 month experiment of logging every incoming and outgoing call. In two months, we received something like 20 calls, all of which were solicitation calls and she made 1 call. Our bill was right at $30 with local service only, no long distance or calling features such as call waiting, etc or anything else.

RE: Which one of these is the better TV?

If you are going to stick with a minivan, I would go with the newer one also. Don't know for sure, but the Toyota of that vintage may not have as much power as the Chrysler either.
For what it is worth, we tow our Pup with a 2004 Sienna and it does great.

RE: Off the wall - diesel forklift MPG question

That isn't going to be fun at all. Squirrely will likely be an understatement. The other problem you may have (not familiar with your area) will be is it legal to even drive it that distance on the public roadway?

RE: single cup coffee makers

I don't know about the other makers out there, but you can get the little cup that allows you to use your own coffee with the Kurig/Cuisinart machines. We have one of the cups, but haven't used it yet. So with it, at least you don't have sweat not finding k-cups.
DW is the coffee drinker in the family, so the being about to make just a single cup works out great for us. The kids also use it for hot water for oatmeal, cocoa, etc.
For what it's worth, we have the Cuisinart and have been very happy with it. We got it because it had a better warranty than the Kurig did.

RE: Early Verizon update??

I would go to one of their actual Verizon stores and just explain the situation and see if they will go for it. If you are moving from a basic (no data line) to a smartphone, they may since you will be paying more to them.
Another option is to buy a used phone off of one of these people that have to upgrade as soon as a new phone comes out. If I went this route, unless buying from a reputable (if there are any) reseller, I would do the transaction at a store so they can verify the phone can be activated on your account.

RE: Tires for Toad, General or Firestone?

I run Michelins on my vehicles now and have run Toyos in the past and have been happy with both. Firestone came off my list a few years ago when one of their stores tried to pull the "you need new brakes, this is a death-trap and I wouldn't drive it another inch" scam on my wife when she heard a strange noise and pulled into their store to get it looked at. We complained to the store manager and corporate with no results.
I ran Generals once and didn't get good life out of them. I've never tried Coopers or Goodyears.

RE: Another case of dreaded 2011 Ford 6.7L HPFP failure?

For the filter on the GM is better guy's, Huntindog said this earlier but you must have missed it. The GM HPFP's actually are failing at a marginally higher percentage of sales than the Ford. The difference, again as stated earlier by others, is that GM is fixing them under warranty. There has not been one GM owner posting anywhere that his HPFP failed and warranty was denied. In fact, I have not seen a verified owner report of a GM failure.
GM is going above and beyond, at least in the case of my brother-in-law. His pump bit the dust a month ago and he was about 10K past the warrantee and they covered the repair. When the problem was diagnosed, his dealer said they would see if GM would good faith it since he had been a loyal customer with them. He was shocked to say the least that they agreed to cover it.

RE: A Hybrid in FL in late June?

You should be in the parks in the heat of the day. Just need the ac at night.
After being in the parks in late June, 80 in the camper will be comfortable. We are fortunate that we can go to Disney during off times and haven't been in the Summer in 9 years. We went in mid-June and I think it was about 150 in the park.

RE: A Hybrid in FL in late June?

We've camped over the July 4 holiday in our PUP with the same size AC and didn't have any problems. Yea, it wasn't as cold as in the Spring or Fall, but it was comfortable. This was in full sun. In a shaded site, we certainly had no problems.

RE: What vehicle was driven upon your initial DMV driving test ?

'78 Ford F150 long bed. 300 straight six with three on the tree. I don't remember what my score was, I just know I passed.
My dad told me that when he went for a driver's test, it was pouring down rain (this was in small town Georgia and before all the rules about not having the test during bad weather) that day. He said the examiner walked to the edge of the porch on the building and looked at the rain and asked him "Son, you know how to drive don't you?" Of course my dad had been driving for years on the farm and answered that he did. The examiner then told my dad to drive around the building while he waited on the porch. I guess he passed.

RE: Daytona 500

Ok, I have a question. Let me preface this with I'm not a big fan of NASCAR, but I do watch it some if it happens to be on when I have the TV on. That being said, out of curiousity, I clicked on this link at ESPN to see the full race results. One of the columns on the table indicates "Money" for each driver. Is this what they got just for the 500, the entire week, etc? I was curious as to how the money is determined because you have Johnson who ran 2 laps getting more money than Mark Martin who finished 10th and led for 2 laps. Also, is this just what the driver made or is this the total take and the team/expenses still have to come out of this?
Points Champions of previous years get extra money just for showing up. Not sure what numbers you were looking at to determine if the pay was for one race or the week. The pay is for the team, however, each driver has their own contact to determine how much money they actually get from the winnings. A large part if not all of the expenses are paid by the car/team sponsors.
Thanks for the info. I figured it might be something like that. ESPN didn't provide any information on what their number meant and since this is the first race, I couldn't tell much either. I wish I got paid for just showing up...
