RE: Huntington Beach Weather

Well no snow in that area in many years, and even when it did snow, it was only a few flakes, that did not stick. You can check Weather.com and look at other months. It should be nice. I normally wear shorts until mid October. Fred. Wow! Surf City (HB) for 30 years - somehow missed even the non-stick floaters, LOL!.:W Agree with first post - could have Santa Wind conditions - making it quite warm. Could be mild to cool - maybe some precipitation. Fer sure - no night-time temps below about 50 degrees. ~

RE: Rv ladder

Another vote for a collapsible ladder. Lots of uses - and you can use it wherever it's needed. As bpounds suggests - the attached ladders are not something I really want to put my faith in!.:W I have a perm mounted ladder - and will use a *real* ladder if I'm at home - or my collapsible ladder if needed on the road. If you still want a permanently mounted ladder you can take your time and watch for another Terry with a ladder & rear configuration the same as yours. (Ask the owner if it's OK to measure for bracket locations.) BTW - a good place to check for a used perm mount ladder would be an RV salvage yard. ~

RE: Shocking experience

This is why I ALWAYS make sure that my jacks make good contact with the ground. I do not put plastic or wood under the jacks. :( Hmmmmm "ALWAYS" = *STILL* incorrect! "TenOC" - You made this same statement back on 7-25-11, on page 2 - in the thread "Electric Shock" - which was de-bunked by Mike Sokol and others in following posts.:( For those that wish to find out why it's incorrect - Click here Follow along for details & links to the excellent video for testing for "hot skin" by Sokol. ~ Also, you will find that wood under stabilizer jacks *IS* the "way to go" for lightning prone areas in this thread - Click here- see the links provided. "Do it your way" is your choice - - but you should present facts to back *your* opinions..:R ~

RE: St Tires VS LT Tires

I have decided to go with the XPS Rib 235x85R16 Michelin tire. They are expensive at $300 each but I feel better with that tire than I do with the LT series. I still don't know the wisdom of this and the outcome this summer while traveling over 8,000 miles, but this is the way I am going. We leave in June for an extended trip so I hope I have made a good choice. If I find out before we leave in June that this is not a wise thing to do then I will change again. I will not however go with a 17 inch tire because of the expense of buying new wheels along with new tires. Thanks for all the good input on this subject I will let you know how it all works out. The regulation below needs your attention. It dosen't say what kind of tires must be used as long as they meet the axle's requirements. Don't put your safety in the hands of others. Do some more research, please. DOT ref FastEagle FE's suggestion is good. Putting "your safety in the hands of others" is the pot calling the kettle black!.:R When doing your research, also "research" the number of ST tires FE has used on his 5th wheel. Last I saw (FE's own post) was 23 or 24. For some reason the doctor can't (or won't) heal himself..:W IMO - FE is a firm believer the "ST" designation stands for - "Simply Terrific". ~

RE: 5th Wheel hitch

We recently purchased a new Rockwood Ultra-lite 8265 WS that comes with a Reese Revolution 5th wheel sidewinder hitch. Is anyone familiar with this hitch and what kind of 5th wheel hitch should we buy for the pickup. We were advised that we would need a locking wedge for the hitch. We were also advised to stay away from hitches with a sliding bar and look only at those with locking jaws. As you can probably guess, we are not familiar with hitches and any help would be greatly appreciated. Ditto the previous reply. Sounds like your purchase includes the hitch..:? Give the readers some more info: Is your pickup a long bed or a short bed? Maybe you should also tell what brand & load capacity of the pickup. 3/4 T? . . . 1T? For those that aren't familiar with the 5th wheel you purchased, look at your specs - length? Weight? IMO - seems "someone" has you (unnecessarily) worried about the features of the hitch. Reese owners *will* chime in with info! However - In the meantime . . . use the search feature here (box in upper left) and try a search on your particular model of Reese hitches, and if that doesn't help, simply enter "Reese Hitches". For even more info - do the same with the "archives" - over one year old. should be lots of info & reading available. ~

RE: to chip or not to chip DURAMAX engine?

a bit of warning. starting with MY 2006, GM can check the ECM to see if a non factory program was ever installed in the truck. even if you remove it, and put back the factory program, the checksum will be stored showing a modified program. can result in a denied warranty claim and a void in power train warranty. In some cases the dealer will need to do the check and send verification to GM showing no modified program was ever installed before they will authorize a warranty power train repair. If your still under your 10 year power train warranty with mileage it's something to consider. If you go with EFI live, you can buy a new ECM and keep the old ECM with factory programing to swap back in so it doesn't show a non OEM program. Let the (chip) buyer beware!.:W Not a good plan *unless* you are prepared to be your own warranty station. Sometimes the best "avoidance" strategy (even new ECM) can backfire. So *when* you are denied warranty work - it's you against "city hall" to prove it was never chipped. GM has deep pockets - and holds all the cards. ~

RE: Where are all the young(er) TT/RV camping lovers?

We're the odd couple out in our social circle- we have a trailer and love to use it! We're 32 and 31 respectively, but have owned a trailer since 2008. We're always the youngest on the campground! We meet wonderful folks, but they're all at a very different stage of life than we are. To make us even more odd, we don't have children, so any young families we see aren't in the same stage of life either. Wish younger folks would look at camping and spending time in nature as better entertainment (and more rewarding) than bar-hopping and random parties. Ok, rant over! :) Has to do with employment and only weekends available. Also once kids reach about middle school age and are into sports (etc.) - they need to be there! However - Find some Firefighters - 30 years on the job & never ran out of places to go, go, go - with folks of *ALL* ages! Lots of trips of all sorts with various "equipment" and "toys". Actually think we did way more when we were younger - even with kids! Try joining some kind of club - for off road, boating, M/Cs & ATVs, etc. You *should* find folks of all ages. BTW - My 85 year old neighbor still snow skis & surfs (darn good, too!) ~

RE: giving a pill to a difficult dog

You will hear all sorts of suggestions-wrap the pill in various foods, open the capsule and mix it with something yummy, etc. Bottem line-if your dog does not want to be pilled, you will have to try something different. I have an English Mastiff,(185 lbs) that cannot be pilled. If it's obvious that your dog will not take a pill, no matter how it is disguised or shoved down her throat-you will have to go a different route.Dogs can smell the medication, no matter how it is disguised. You'll get bitten, scratched, hurt the dog, or generally develop a bad relationship. Ask your vet for another suggestion. Now - *that* was a lot of help!.:R.:R ~

RE: St Tires VS LT Tires

I have had so many problems with Good Year Marathon tires I am thinking about going to a Michelin LT 235 85R 16 tire to replace the ST235 80R 16 load range "E". When I check the load range on the Michelin tire it is 400 pounds less than the Good Year which is rated at 3,400 pounds. The Good Year tires are two years old and I am stuck in Williamsburg Virginia with four tires with tread separation and blisters and can not get home until I but tires. My Montana weighs 13,000 pounds as it sets, so I need a tire that will carry that load. The tire dealer I am talking with is trying to sell me LT tires and I am concerned about them not being able to carry the load. Can somebody help me with good information? IMO - GY load rating is a joke - as well as the tire!.:( Try a search for ST vs LT Tires in the *archives* (over 1yr old). Discussed at length. Also continuously in the 5th wheel and Tech Issues forums. Try this hands on test: Go to a tire dealer that has a GY Marathon available. Lift the tire. Try to compress (push down on) the tire. Now find a Michelin XPS Rib and do the same. Night and day! Try a search on "Marathons" -or- "Goodyear Marathons" to help you decide. ("Goodyear Balloons" might work too!) BTW - check the clearance between the tires. Google - tire size comparison charts for sizes in inches. When you go to LT the 235/85 will usually be an inch larger in diameter. (Which equals a full inch between the 2 tires) You may want to go to 245/75. It will be a *half* inch wider per side. Also - usually the LTs will require 80psi. Check your wheel psi rating. Usually stamped on the back side of the wheel. You found a good tire dealer! Go with Michelin or BFG (owned by Michelin), or other *quality* LT tire. Roll on! ~

RE: giving a pill to a difficult dog

I have had good luck using the liquid form and a needeless syringe. Negative on the pill shooter - dog could aspiragte the pill into the windpipe..:( ~ We have two small dogs - as different as night and day. One = really easy. Put pill in some soft cheese, gone! Other = Mission Impossible! No matter how well "disguised", she either won't accept the cheese (or whatever) -or- eats the cheese and spits out the "concealed" pill (she finds even 1/4 pills). Solution..:C.:W Make your own "liquid form" as follows: Place the pill or (sometimes only a half or quarter as prescribed) between two teaspoons. (Just like the spoons would be "stacked" in your silverware drawer). Push down - compress - the two spoons together until you have powdered the pill. Carefully deposit the powder into a small container. (A drop or two of water into the container *first* will make mixing easier) For the container, I use the small plastic caps that are on top of bottles of "pump" hairspray, etc. Stir the mixture with the tip of your 1-cc syringe & then draw it up into the syringe. Hold the dogs muzzle & give to your dog slowly via the *side* of the mouth. For larger dogs - you may have to use tablespoons, larger container, larger capacity syringe -or- break pill in half and repeat the procedure. Works like a charm! ~ Edit was: changed "ingest" to "aspirate" for the pill shooter. ~

RE: Do They Still Make Mission Brand Tires?

Freestar was the replacement for the Mission brand. They look identical except for the name on the sidewall. The Freestars did however make it to the end of tread life without separating.... Identical right down to the tread separation and sidewall bubbles Sure - if you track down the Chinese mfgr (and you can with a bit of effort) - you can find the real mfgr of each. Maybe the same, maybe not - but why bother . . . just another Chinese ST tire!.:R BTW - If you want to contact a/the Chinese mfgr, *you* too can have tires branded with whatever name *you* wish, eg: "Cooter High Milers"..:C They will be happy to ship a few containers full - then *you* can be a tire distributor on a "Mission" (pun!). When/if the tires get a bad rep - just re-contact the Chinese mfgr and call your next shipment - "Devo Camper Specials" and start again!.:C.:C And - they will meet ST tire specs. ~

RE: Mouse/Mice proofing

~ Google: "Fresh Cab" Safe around people & pets. Available from lots of sources. IMO - way better than moth balls - and the odor isn't "repressive" or linger on and on and on. ~ Need more / other choices than the replies to this thread?.:@ Enter "Mice" in the search box for lots (and LOTS) more discussions, suggestions, pros and cons of various techniques. If that isn't enough - do the same with the search archives. Don't limit the search to any single forum - mice are problems for any/all types of RVs ~

RE: Over the air TV revisited

I dont know if this would help. But this is a website that you punch in the zip code and it will show you where all the digital tranmitters for that zip code. Antenna Point At my S&B which is about half-way between Los Angeles and San Diego, I use the C2-MBS antenna shown at the bottom of the linked page (after you enter your zip code). Saw it at Costco - figured I'd give it a try - although I didn't have high expectations. Very pleasantly surprised! *Excellent* reception (incl stations with HD) - did nothing special regarding alignment. It's about 15' above ground level. IMO - as a step up from the Wingman, this or similar antenna could be easily clamped on/off the top of an RV roof ladder - and aligned if necessary. For me (entering zip code) shows 26 channels within a 60 mile range - which is probably the number I receive. (Never counted 'em, LOL!). ~

RE: Park Place RV Park in Quartzsite AZ

Stayed there a few years back. As I recall, spaces were pretty close and not much room between RV's. Kind of a large parking area with hook ups. For a desert area, I guess it was OK, nothing special. Cold at night when the wind whips up the sand. After seeing the RV show for a couple days, were were ready to move on to someplace else. IIRC - The RV show is in . . Jan or Feb..:R Won't be cold at night any more, LOL - and expect over 100 degrees in the daytime. (NOAA shows low 90's now). Very few folks use campgrounds in Q after the show season. (And most use *free* camping during the show season). Unless you *really* like the heat - I'd pass on that one (summer). If you mean during the winter - different story & probably would be better than "the swamp", LOL! ~

RE: OMG, otc medicine's out of date....

True about the heat ruining the OTC meds far before an expiration date. If you have not left them in the unit year round in heat, pills are often still good past expiration. I have asked this of pharmacists and doctors. The longer they are expired, the more they are just going to lose efficacy. A few months past usually won't affect a thing. Now that is just for pills, not liquids. When you have this issue in the future, it would save you dollars to call up a local pharmacist and tell them what you have, how long it has been expired, and ask if it is likely still good. That way if it is you save time driving to a pharmacy and buying more. Any pharmacist most likely will tell you *not* to use expired meds of any kind, or will not commit. Nothing to do with whether you should or not, or whether they are still good or not - it's a liability issue. ~

RE: Balancing Tires

I am about to purchase new tires for my 5th wheel and was wondering if others have had them balanced before being installed.I have had 3 new trailers and have never seen one yet that came with the tires balanced,it did not seem to affect the towing of any of the previous trailers. Is it advisable to have the tires balanced when installing replacements or not. You haven't "seen one yet that came with the tires balanced" - because of "bean counters" - the mfgr is too darn cheap to do it!.:S Anything that goes 'round should be balanced! However, if it isn't included in the price of the tires - and you feel better saving about $2-$3 more (per wheel) for balancing - more power to ya!.:B ~

RE: Buy local or drive 9 hours?

We can drive 2 hours 20 minutes and pay more or drive 9 hours and save around $6700. I know the closer dealer would be nice for any warranty work. But then again for close to $7000. Difference I can make a vacation out of getting work done also. Picked out what we want in the unit, Then faxed it to the dealers. Prices came back, closer dealer was $10,000. more. Told him thanks but no thanks we have a deal for this amount. He came down but just not enough. Now I will say this up front, if it were say $2000. Or less I can understand that. Price to get a unit delivered down south cost. Plus the other dealer does not have any deliver cost. There next to the plant. Would rather buy local, but then again when your talking this kind of cash. Not sure they want us as a customer anyway. We will be staying in the camper 3 nights there. One in there yard, 2 others in the campground next to the lot. This way we have time to go over the unit. Use everything on it, make sure everything is ready before we head back south. But then again if we buy from the local dealer we would also be doing the same thing. Never would I hook up and take off with a camper for the first time. For me stay and get the bugs worked out then. Head off into the sunset. Pete Are you feeling guilty or something?.:h The local guy won't do you a bit of good for warranty work when you're 3K miles away on a trip!.:W ~
