RE: OTA (Over the air) recording

Thanks 1775 -
I was editing my post the same time you were posting.
The Magnavox may still be out there.
Thanks for another option.

RE: OTA (Over the air) recording

Check out the Magnavox MDR515H/F7 500GB HDD and DVD-R with Digital Tuner .
I have not used it so I don't know how simple it is. There are 384 customer reviews you can read through.
It looks like it is one step more than a VCR and one step less than a DVR.
It connects to an antenna, has a digital tuner built in, and plays back on a TV.
racer4
Found this thread via search - looking for a "non-Tivo" DVR of some kind - doesn't matter if it's high def - or up-convertable.
This Magnavox (515H) *may* now have gone the same route as all the others. (Edit: May still be available - will see!)
Seems TiVo and any other DVRs are *only* available thru sat & cable companies . . who control the market (so they can get a monthly usage fee.)
Any (recent) success stories?

Might as well ban them all

Ban - Tire Threads!
Due to multiple (admitted) Moderator deletes, the continuity
of any discussion - no matter how rational, or polite - is lost.
If nothing else - any and all viewers should keep in mind, the
Moderator deletes, closes threads - at his or her whim.
Doesn't matter if it's good, bad, or ugly.
Easy "out" is: - "It's gone off topic"
It's noteworthy the number of posters who start TIRE topics that genuinely belong on the FIFTH WHEEL forum - on General RVing Issues, or the Tech Issues forum.
Also the various posters who leave the Affinity forums for Escapees,
even with the same IDs (as here) - including some of the "experts" with blogs & web sites.
No doubt this will go "poof" also, LOL!

RE: Vivilon claims to totally restore color of RV

Just read three pages of assurance that Vivilon restores a Motor Home or vehicle color as new, and is recommended by RVs. The link is Vivilon.Com.
Claims to cause oxidation to disappear (which I need for my decals). $125.00 for a quart.
Blessings, Charlie
At $125. a QUART -
the only folks getting any *BLESSINGS*, Charlie - are at Vivilon!.:R

RE: CW Shipping = RIDICULOUS....customer service is even worse.

I presume that it likely would have told you on order of $50 or $100 or more or something like that.
Actually it's $19.99 min purchase for the $5.75 shipping. OP knew that, just chose to complain.
Nothing like a good rant..:W

RE: Use of Vented Tailgates

The benefit of my louvered tailgate is that I don't need to drop the tailgate when unhooking - not any savings in fuel economy.
As well as:
1. What another poster said - with bed cover when *not* towing, everything is out of sight.
2. Your factory tailgate won't be damaged for any reason -
but most importantly it won't "grow legs" - gone in 15 seconds!
Huge "gray market" for factory TGs - they get dented via lots of ways, and . . . . stolen! (vicious circle for replacements).
Be sure to secure it somehow - even a hose clamp to block the "slot" may make a thief move on - he needs a minute or so and a screwdriver.
*If* there is any miniscule improvement in mpg - that's just an *extra* bonus!.:)

RE: Was not aware that RV factory workers paid piecemeal v. hourly

Because they get hourly wages, they won't do a slap dash job? :hMost trucking companies pay by the mile or by percentage of rate. So the more miles you run in a week or the more loads you pull the higher you pay is. So the faster you go the more money you made. I was a union driver who got paid by the hour. Safety man would have a fit if he caught us speeding. He would say "why are you speeding? Your just cutting your pay and endangering the motoring public". Our company had one of the safest insurance ratings in the industry. And it is still in the business and has operated since 1925. Not many trucking companies can make that claim, especially those companies that pay by the mile or by percentage. It is the same with furnature factory jobs who pay by piece work. They are in a hurry, slap things together, and end up cutting fingers off. Most of these furnature factories have gone out of business because it is getting harder and harder to find people willing to work under those "slave" conditions. Plus the have all kinds of shoddy product causing customer relations problems. Hourly workers don't do sloppy work! No, they don't do a "slap dash job" because they have a safety man watching to make sure that they are doing it safely and properly.
You are comparing apples to oranges!.:R
There's a place for piece work as well as by hourly wage - whether it's union or non-union.
Much depends on the work being done.
"Piece work" doesn't have to be poor quality, or large quantity.
The worker - or craftsman - is being paid for the work accomplished.
Maybe it's good pay - maybe not.
Example would be electrical work.
Wire my room addition.
Electrician (one man) will bid a price to do the job.
Sure - you could hire the same guy by the hour, but you might be *shocked* -:W- by the hourly rate!
Essentially he's a "piece worker".
Same example - big job.
Yeah - the contractor/s still bid on the job.
Many electricians completing the work.
Probably most are paid hourly by the contractor.
Recent series cable TV on high-end custom RVs for celebs.
The guy building the 2-story 5th wheel for Simon Cowell uses an Amash Craftsman for the cabinetry.
Would guess he's a piece worker too.

RE: Motorhome fires

Thinking back, it seems that most RV fires reported on the news are motorhomes. Obviously motorhomes have engines that 5ers and TT's don't have (but they have the tow vehicles). Is there something about MH's that make them more likely to catch fire? We are thinking about going to a MH and this bothers me. :h
Thinking back -
of 30 years spent in the Fire Service for a city with City and State Beach (campgounds) as well as the busiest freeway (volume) in the USA . . .
RV fires of *any kind* are/were VERY few and far between - as compared to car and or truck fires.
During that time, I (personally) responded to all sorts of car and truck fires (on city streets and the freeway) - including a couple of gasoline tanker fires and a van chock full of marijuana (it wasn't on fire - radiator hose broke - just steam, driver bailed).
But - *NEVER* an RV fire!.:@
Mobile Homes (in "trailer parks") - yes, several. RV's = No
No doubt the "other guys" probably responded on some I didn't know about - but usually "events" are exchanged between shifts going off duty with their counterparts - both for "gee-whiz" value and equipment utilized, etc.
Fire investigator for about a year also (next level above the Company Commander) - no RVs.
For MH / 5th wheel comparison - consider that a MH has more potential sources than a 5th wheel - unless, of course you include the 5th wheel tow vehicle, LOL.
And for ExRocketScientist - you should be able to get stats for all types of fires - from your state (mandated) Fire Incident Reporting System.
Lots of required info - as to fire origin, damage, etc.

RE: Was not aware that RV factory workers paid piecemeal v. hourly

this whole 'piecemeal' thing is news to me, and kinda hard to believe it's done that way
don't car factories--which in concept are doing a similar thing by taking in components and assembling them--pay by the hour?
Why is it hard to believe?.:h
(No doubt there are some mfgrs with hourly employees)
and -
*WORLD* of difference between auto manufacturers and RV manufacturers - dealer networks, amount of "units", etc.
Take up way to much space to compare.
And - why do you think everyone complains about Quality Control, LOL!
BTW - lots of RV assembly workers workers are "Quality Amish Craftsman" - just ask Bob Villa..:W

RE: Medical Insurance on the road

Just curious about what would be limiting you to strictly HMO or PPO coverage? Just about all Blue Cross policies are available with nationwide coverage where YOU choose the provider.
Unfortunately - not in MA. RomneyCare in MA has created severe limitations in what is available. I have been completely unable to find any private purchase policies that are not HMO's.
IMO - you need to "re-title" your thread (or start a new one) to attract the attention of other *MA residents* who may have more insight than folks from the other 49.

RE: Walmart in Wilston, ND - Oil Field Parking

Here is an article and picture of a Walmart in Wilston, ND which is near the oil fields. No wonder some Walmarts are off limits. Wiliston, ND Walmart
Your post -and article- really has nothing to do with WalMart - but *everything* to do with the lack of any kind of housing facilities for the thousands that have arrived in Williston for the jobs available. They're parking and sleeping in cars/SUVs/pickups lots of places!.:S
WalMart is the only "big box" store (with big lot) in town.
Another article - "The town the recession forgot."
Williston, ND = "Busiest town in America".
BTW - in one of the many articles: WalMart can't keep stock on the shelves it's gone so fast (business is excellent) . . . and needs more employees but can't get them due to the competition.
(even Mickey D's pays $9. an hour - with a $300. signing bonus).
Probably hurts the locals - but if you own a business or property - you're in clover!
So, do you have an axe to grind -or- just trying to stir the pot?.:h

RE: Dealer invoice

Don't really believe the pricing... from MSRP to Dealer is exactly 30% on all of them.
Somebody is guessing I think.
Not sure about the above (didn't join):
" . . . from MSRP to dealer is exactly 30% of all of them."
MSRP - should be the price (before negotiations) on the dealer's lot.
30% *off MSRP* doesn't even get *close* to dealer invoice or dealer cost!
(Dealer *cost* is dealer invoice, minus dealer "incentives".
Dealer incentives may be for volume - or almost anything the manufacturer has up his sleeve at the time to move his product).
~
"Somebody is guessing" . . . . is way too polite, LOL!.:)
From the site - info box where you enter your zip code, 2nd and 3rd sentences:
"All such info is gathered from sources and or based on algorithms or estimates."
(Should have added - palm readers)..:R
"No assurance can be given that this information is accurate, complete or current."
(So - why bother?)..:S.

RE: Self Inflicted Spam, or; "Why Don't I Just Shoot Myself?"

My spam doesn't go in a "box" it disappears so who cares.
I used to do that too. *Automatic* deletion..:C
Gone! Why do I need to see it?
Until accidentally I discovered, in a few very rare instances, NON-spam was deleted..:(
Easier to let spam go to a spam in-box - and *if* there is any, check the subject & sender.
Also a way to check on your e-mail provider.
BTW - haven't seen anything in the Spam box in at least a year . . .
but I probably won't win a new computer either, LOL!
