RE: I-15 through Salt Lake City

The 84-80 route will bring you back to I-215 just below the center of SLC. Trouble is, the worst construction right now (went through this week) is south of there, I-15 between Orem and Provo. The more northerly parts of I-15 are in pretty good shape for now. I'd just tuff it out -- there's no easy bypass to the Provo area. If it was me, I'd turn off I-15 at Pocatello, I86/84 to Twin Falls, and US93 south to Vegas. Skip the Salt Lake area completely.

RE: Driving in Big Cities

Agree with the lane suggestions above. Sometimes you have to go faster than you really like, in order to avoid causing more snarls. The old "I'll go my own speed" plan is not always the best. But the main problem I see is that half the freeways in the country are under construction. And either the orange cones or the concrete barricades are placed a bit into your lane. I-15 through Salt Lake seems always that way, and yesterday was no exception!

RE: Experience with protective shields for towing behinf RV

I've gone with and without toad protection. Now I have the Roadmaster Tow Defender (similar to Protect-a-tow, but costs more!). I'm convinced that it works well, as there's much less debris on the toad now. It looks flimsy and cumbersome at first, but once attached it goes on and off in about 15 seconds during hookup. The main improvement, though was getting rid of the heavy full width mudflap on my Winnebago Journey. The third time I ran over it and dislodged it, it went into the nearest dumpster. I agree that it kicked up a lot of rocks and road rubber onto the toad, despite my efforts to raise it higher off the road.

RE: Banking while on the road

I use a fully Internet bank -- ING Direct. Never a problem. 30,000 free ATM's around the country. They recently added the online check-deposit thing, where you attach a jpeg of the check. Unfortunately they were bought by Capital One, and who knows what will happen next. But a far cry better than the crooks at BOA, whose left hand never knew what the right hand was doing.

RE: Manual transmissions...will they be gone in a few years ?

I bought a 2006 CRV as a toad, the last year they made a stickshift. Easier to hook up and tow. But in my old age it's a pain in stop and go traffic, like the Phoenix freeways. Still, a shame to see them disappear.

RE: We Traded

I drive a lot less coach than described in this thread, and so may be out of line here. But what I hear is a guy who's a Newmar fan (justifiably) trading out to a Fleetwood, repeating how much he liked his Newmar, and glossing over the list of problems on his new Fleetwood. My question: Why?

RE: poorly done ad by Newell

Then why do they have unsold 2013 models on their web site? Bounced checks.

RE: Osoyoos B.C. to Twin Falls ID.

There's no getting around potential bad weather that time of year. I-84 between Pendlelon and Nampa can be an adventure in the snow. Heck, this March even Boise was a whiteout the day I went through. Check ODOT for road conditions the day you want to go.

RE: 2002 Honda CRV toad

Made it easy. Bought a 2003 CRV stick. Attach it kill the vacume. Put it in neutral. Unlock the wheel and go. x2. With a 2006 CRV, the last year they made a stick.

RE: Cable TV

At least 25 feet of cable. Sometimes your connector is a long way away.

RE: Fresh water tanks

Let's see.....you're camping with three women and a (teenage?) boy. And there is a water issue. You're doomed. There is no resolution that does not involve you lugging water jugs.

RE: What type of tire gauge Digital or pencil type?

Tried several digitals. Seemed to me they read all over the place. So now I have a big long trucker-type stick gauge, and I'm a lot happier. It's easier to reach all the valves. About $30 at Napa.

Plenty of TP. And a "backup roll" stashed away where the wimmin won't see it!

RE: Columbia River Area The Dalles

Well as usual, I'm the Devil's advocate. I've driven the Gorge perhaps a hundred times over the years. I MUCH prefer the Washington side for scenery, either in a car or a big rig. You can look out onto the views, instead of just driving down a 4-lane pile of traffic. The road surface is good, and wide, and the grades are gradual. That said, after The Dalles, or maybe Hood River, the Washington side is a bit more congested, with small towns, etc, so I usually cross back over to Oregon at one of those two places. (Hood River Bridge is a little on the narrow side.) Then you can stop at Multnomah Falls if you like. There's no easy way through Portland in a big RV. The lanes are narrow and the signage is confusing to a stranger. I agree with I-205 North to I-5, to avoid the downtown snakepit.

RE: New desktop on the way, what then?

Lead, mercury, plastic bags it all goes in the trash now.I'm with Wyo. I'm politically incorrect. Can't be bothered with all this complicated stuff.

RE: New desktop on the way, what then?

If you have the original disc, your Office 2003 will likely install on your new machine perfectly well. The newer Office versions, not so easily. And if Office 2003 does what you need, stay with it. It certainly works for me, but all I use is Word and Excel.

RE: Credit Card #'s hacked at gas pumps...

My credit card account with one of the "major" banks was hacked this week for the second time in a year. While chatting to the fraud guy on the phone he claimed that gas stations are now the most frequent place they see accounts hacked. No real answer. I'm just glad the bank is on top of it, rejects the phony transaction and hangs the account as soon as they see something suspicious. But I need a backup "2nd card" for if that happens when I'm out on the road!

RE: Why do many restaurants make unsatisfactory meals ?

"Eat where the cops eat" usually works out, also. Here in NY that limits you to only resurants that do not serve alcohol. Sucks to live in the People's Republic of (insert favorite Nanny State name!)
