RE: Is Rving for us? Are we alone or are there others....

Looking to PT retire on 1/1/2013. Thinking FW TH RVing. But see so many non active, non athletic types at campgrounds, don't get me wrong, very nice folks, just not physically athletic lifestyle, at least not what we see. We both run marathons, road bike, kyak, play tennis, hike, motorcycle among other activities. Not sure how we'd 'fit into a campground crowd'. We will plan our routes around athletic events (week long bikes rides, marathons, etc.).
We're looking at this lifestyle for us, are there other like minded folks out there doin these activities or are we crazy? Maybe we should just buy a condo in St. Pete and enjoy the beach at Clearwater.
Amy-52/Terry-55
I don't take offense to it, but you might want to reread what you posted again, I highlighted the part in question.
Many people enjoy many different activities. As others have mentioned, why should you care what other people do, do what you like. I myself like to drink beer and cook, at any campground that is alot more popular than being able to run a marathon, not that it makes it any better, just more popular.
People like to get away from their neighbors, cel phones, ect, ect. Not to mention taking time with their families to spend quality family time together doing things outdoors, away from the TV, WII, and Internet. Camping is supposed to be fun, I suspect everyone you ever saw camping so far, might not have looked a certain way to you, but I can gaurntee they were all having fun. It's too expensive to RV and not have fun.

RE: MVP RV Sold to Buyer Which Plans to Liquidate Business

Very true, maybe, just maybe Thor knew the end was coming. I don't think they would have sold that unit off unless it wasn't meeting the numbers. I think there is a reason most of the RV manufacturers have settled in the Elkhart, IN area and not California. I think most people are aware of the challenging business climate.
Logistics would be the first reason to be "in the middle" in Elkhart. Cali might be the largest economy in the U.S. but it is the most fragile and unstable. Many business' open up branch facilities, with no intention of ever keeping them open past the peak, Thor new when that was, MVP didn't.

RE: Best built toy hauler?

I guess I got lucky and got a good Raptor. As far as Heartland being head over heals above Keystone, that would be a bit of a stretch.
The best built toyhauler is not a toyhauler at all, look at Living quarter horse trailers. As the others have mentioned, you get what you pay for, and anything under 6 figures are all suceptable to quality control issues. Paying for top craftsmen, engineers with PE stamps costs money, real money.
As far as going with whats mainstream, the biggest thing is finding a dealer that has a good relationship with the MFG, which ever one that would be. You could have the best built Heartland in the world, but if the dealer sucks, your on the hook for finding out where to get it fixed. Worse than that if the dealer jackslaps the repair, Heartlant won't pay to fix it again properly, period. If you have the poorest built Keystone product and the dealer gets everything taken care of in a timely manner, which would you rather have?
In the end, I think alot of people think the mass produced RV's should be trouble free for 15 years. That is a pretty high expectation. Many here on the board fix a ton of stuff there selves and skip the headaches of dealing worrying about how bad you got screwed and go back to camping and enjoying the outdoors.
Good luck with whatever brand you decide on.

I think those look entirely stupid. Never had a wheel come loose, ever. I always use a torque wrench, seeing how popular these things have gotten, I guess I am in the minority.

RE: Buy this company: MVP RV Auction Pre-Qual Ends April 16

Parties interested in purchasing all the assets of MVP RV at an upcoming bulk auction have until Monday (April 16) to pre-qualify as a bidder. Link here 117 vendor creditors that did business with MVP RV have filed with claims totaling $1,084,148 with CMA. An estimated total of $37 million is due to the company’s creditors.
Pictures of the equipment for sale here
Let's assume you had $38 million and purchased the company. How would you run it and what would you do?
I would start by designing a model that appeals to a broad range of consumers. "Build one thing, and be the best at it." Paying for engineering up front, PE stamp and exceed the industry standards. Commonizing the bottom half (ground to floorline) would be the first priority, as a line change to complete the top half depending on market sales is critical. By eliminating overhead, and that means every wasted penny is how to make a financially healthy company. Building an exciting model is the other half.

RE: Pulling 40' toy hauler

I tow a Raptor 4014LEV with a 08 F350 dually. Is it enough truck to stop it if the trailer brakes fail? You betcha, rule 1 when driving anything is to not get yourself into a situation where you have to rely on the weak link, which is the trailer brakes.
The tow command system on the Ford is one of the many reasons I am sold on Ford trucks. Leave it in tow haul and drive like your supposed too, and you'll get 177,000 miles out of your brakes like Nayther did.
You can put asbestos brake pads on an 18 wheeler with fresh cut drums, if a car pulls out in front of you in less than the minimum stopping distance, your hitting it, class 8, 10, 12, 100, it aint going to make any difference.
Keeping yourself from getting into these situations is what makes the difference. Not overcompensating on a tow vehicle, not backed by practical driving skills or abilities.

RE: Anyone owne a Keystone Raptor?

We are looking at a new 2011 Raptor 4014, what’s a good price on one of these? I think the dealership is not giving me the best deal possible, shocker I know.....
I paid $in the low 60's for mine. 2011 4014 LEV.
I have the B&W companion (18K) and love it.

RE: Help me find a 5th Wheel Toyhauler

Many parks here have 30/50 as well, so the option for a second cord/plug for the 3rd AC would be a great idea if you are ordering.

RE: Help me find a 5th Wheel Toyhauler

I have an 08 350 dually, with the 4.10. Pulling a Raptor 4014LEV I am averaging 8-10 depending on speed, so I would second the 3.73 gear.

RE: Anyone ever made they're own Fuel Tank ??

You can build one in a heart beat. Figure out where you want all the connections, add baffles, I would recommend testing it to 6psi and use a 4psi releving cap in case the vent ever stops up. Soap and water works great on for finding the leak if it has one, alot cheaper than dye check and alot cleaner.
The davantages to building your own are you can make better use of the space you have. (get a larger tank than a straight up 20 or 30 gal) Just keep in mind what needs to support the tanks weight. The empty weight of the tank, the weight of the fuel capacity, and I would add a 30% weight margin in for slosh if its not completely full.
So if your total is 400 lbs, add 30% to it (520 lbs) and that is what the supporting structure needs to be able to handle.

RE: Fate of Shuttered MVP RV Lies with Liquidation Company

Hey, I am going to celebrate tonight. Couldn't have happened to a better company.
As for the dealers, I agree whole heartedly, when you knowingly sell a crappy product, eventually your going to be left holding the bag.

RE: Gulfstream Enduramax

The old saying "you get what you pay for" really applies here. If they plan on full timing in it, what is an extra 20K for a custom build unit that will not fail?
I know plenty of people that fulltime (working) in Raptors, Fusions, Cyclones, ect. They get paid $150 a day perdiem which pays off a trailer pretty quick. So getting a new unit every 3-5 years is really not a big deal. That probably wont be the case for your Son and DIL. If it is, by all means, get a popular brand.
As far as dealers steering you, it is worth a mention, however results may differ. When looking for my Raptor, my salesman told me there are 2 kinds of KZ's. One that leaks and one thats gonna leak.
Evidently they got a bunch of flack from KZ about fixing warranty leaks.
Botom line, if the dealer has a good relationship with a brand they steer you twards, by all means, listen to them.

RE: Like A Rock

You know why Chevy had to stop using the "Like A Rock" commercials? Because, rocks sink like a turd in a punch bowl, much like GM did in '08.
Chrysler should have been over in the 80's, or does anyone else not remember the taxpayer bailout back then.

RE: Used Toy haulers what should I avoid?

My first suggestion is stay far away from any brand that is not still in business.
ThorCa fits that bill, as well as Weakend Warrior. If their products were top notch and they stood behind what they sold and built it right in the first place, they would all still be in business. I had a ThorCa product when the ownership changed hands, they left all of their former customers without any warranty.
