RE: Dodge front driveshaft lube (R+R)

Here's a picture showing the lube point in the cardan joint. It can be difficult to find the first time but marking the location with white chalk or paint should make it easier next time.

RE: Comparing emmission problems

What he's saying is that you can remove the emissions equipment using kits that are available (at your own risk, of course. It's technically illegal). I'm constantly tempted to "lose" the stuff in my 07.5 Dodge RAM but the legality issue holds me back. Anyway, I'm not having much problem with the emissions now. A few years ago it was a different story but since the J35 recall all's been fairly good lately.

RE: Dometic Fridge not cooling (the problem found)

I'll take a rough guess here. Nobody mentioned the possibility of a failure in the control board, such as intermittent component or wiring. If nothing else works you may want someone with knowledge to check that area...

RE: My Ram is in the hospital

Hey, just so all the haters know, I just recently had to repair a power steering hose on my 5 year old RAM too. Scandalous! :B
Must be a common problem. My 5 yr old RAM just had the manual tranny fluid replaced this morning and the mechanic noticed a very small leakage on one of my power steering hoses.

RE: Never had this happen before

My vent covers are about 5 yrs old now and still looking good. I'm currently parked in the hot Tucson sun, which is no doubt pushing the limit. Maybe I have those UV resistant ones? Time will tell...:C

RE: Places to see

I spend quite a bit of time in Albuquerque. Be informed that RV parks in the area generally raise their prices substantially during this event.

RE: Watch that lie o meter....

To discern a problem I would have to leave the 'lie-o-meter' on all the time and refer to it often. I use it only rarely since I find it somewhat depressing to actually know how much fuel I'm using. (I know, it's a big truck and mileage isn't supposed to be great). Anyhoo, ignorance is bliss :B.

RE: fiver frames

Contrary to what some have said on this thread NuWa does (or did) use Lippert frames. My 2007 Hitchhiker has a Lippert frame. So far, no problems I'm aware of. These posts about Lippert quality do concern me, though. I can only hope NuWa had inspected the frame and performed any repairs before final assembly. After all, they ARE known to manfacture a quality product.

RE: Foil Insulation for Windows

Well, I purchased the Reflectix (sp?) yesterday at Lowes and installed it inside the windows facing the afternoon sun. It's gonna be pretty toasty here in Tucson for the next several days so It'll be put to the test.
I read that some of you mentioned installing this material on the OUTSIDE of the windows. I had already thought of that because it makes a lot more sense to prevent the sun from hitting the window in the first place. However, I've noted that other RVers always install the material INSIDE the windows. I suppose the reason for doing this is weather related since high winds could blow the material away. Besides, it may look a little tacky unless very neatly installed.
My large rear window already has a removable solar shade covering it (as someone else mentioned). Otherwise, that window is a huge heat radiator when struck by the sun!
The only negative I can see with this reflective material is that it obviously blocks light and makes the RV a little darker inside, but I can sure live with that in exchange for cooler temperatures...

Foil Insulation for Windows

Hi, all. We're getting into record breaking temperatures here in So. AZ and I'm thinking it's time to put some kind of insulation in the windows facing the afternoon sun. My question is: where do you obtain this material and what is it called (looks like dimpled aluminum foil). Any other thoughts on insulating windows is welcome. Thanks....

RE: Jiffy Lube horror stories

Not a Jiffy Lube story, but I once caught an employee at a Walmart tire & lube store trying to put 13 quarts of oil in my 12 quart capacity diesel. That was years ago and since then I installed a Fumoto valve in the oil pan and change the oil myself.

RE: Bird nest in the pin box

I've had this problem in the past. I simple stuff an old towel into the space so that it's impossible for a bird to enter.

RE: Closed under bellies and rodents

I had this problem while encamped in the mountains of eastern TN a few years ago. The underbelly was not the problem but I noticed where the rams for the slides went into the fiver there were large enough gaps to allow mice to enter. Now, whenever in suspected rodent country I stuff rags into these spaces. This seems to work well. I just have to remember to remove the rags before retracting the slides (now I'm thinking steel wool may be a better choice)....

RE: Why no cheap no frills overnight w/elec offered?

We've used Comanche Land RV Park in Fort Stockton, TX, on our way to and from Big Bend. Used to be $12 and is now $16. Still a bargain with full hookups and CATV.
X2. If I remember it's the RV park with the big arrow stuck in the sand. Not an especially attractive park but the price is right and the owner is very nice.

RE: Venting your 5th Wheel while driving

Some of my vents open automatically while underway. No matter how tightly I close them they often open, depending on speed and wind direction. So far there's been no damage to the vent covers and for some reason I don't seem to have this happen those rare times I'm driving during rain (possibly because I drive slower). Those vent covers others have mentioned would be nice but so far I'm doing OK without them.

RE: 4 flat tires in storage

A good tool to have on hand is a valve core tightener. I was losing air in one of my truck tires and figured I picked up a nail or screw somewhere. I took the truck to a tire store and they found the core inside the valve was loose. A quick turn with this tool fixed the leakage. Now I'm in the habit of occasionally checking ALL tires (truck as well as fiver) with the tool.

RE: From class A to Fifth wheel

I agree with all the responses on this thread. I enjoyed 17 years fulltiming in a 1990 Flair 30' MH (no slides). I towed a 2000 Saturn behind. It was a good combo. Now having gone the fifth wheel route five years ago I feel I've made the right choice, especially after retiring and spending a month or more in each place I visit (six months when wintering in AZ). I have no concerns about maintaining an extra engine/drivetrain and the fiver does feel more like home (as stated by others here). Yes, there's a learning curve when backing up but over time this becomes less of an issue.
I do miss my Saturn, though (my truck serves as my daily driver). I wish I could have kept her but, regrettably, I had to let her go :( .

RE: Minimizing Weight on Pinbox

It might be my own paranoia, but I try to tow with the tanks full or empty, but never inbetween because those tanks have no baffles. To me, water hammer in thost tanks is far more damaging than just carrying the weight.
I agree, Mile High and that's another reason I travel with both holding tanks completely empty and a very minimal amount in the fresh water tank, hopefully not enough to cause any "sloshing" damage. Since I rarely travel more than a day or so to my next destination having fresh water on board is not a major concern. I usually carry a gallon or two in plastic jugs, which is normally sufficient during my travels.
