RE: Gas Wars

AH, the good old days, gas wars, some as low as 15 cents per gallon, but this was in 1950. Reg gas in our area now $4.18, Diesel $3.95. If you go into the city of Chicago, Reg gas $4,40, plus
Diesel around 5 dollars. So if you are heading this way, fuel up at least 100 miles from the city. Gas buddy will help.

RE: Air conditioning shroud broke.

We punched a hole in our years back. Just remover the shroud, get one of those fiberglass repair kits, took about two hrs, painted it white, that was over 8 years ago, still up there, and you know it will fit.

RE: tire pressure

Your tire rims might be your biggest issue. These also have a max pressure rating, just like your tires have. So going from 60 to 95 PSI on your rims might exceed the MFG rating.
I would check this first, then if OK, go by the tires recommended pressure. But there should be two numbers on the tires relating to vehicle weight, verser pressure.

RE: Dinette Invention

Talking about seat belts, What about those many thousands of children transported by school buses every day around our nation? Are they belted in? If so, very few and far between have this option. Seat belts do save lives, we just have to use common knowledge when applying this practice. Thus any attempt to save additional lives is noteworthy.
School buses are totally built different than a MH or car. That steel frame between each window goes completely around the entire bus from the frame on one side to the other. You effectively have that many roll bars on a bus. The seats are now higher than ever to prevent bouncing around. Bus seats are 39" wide and are to seat 3 students. Each student gets 13". There is no room for belts or buckles. Unless you have Kindergarten they are packed in like sardines. School buses that have seat belts are typically used for special needs students. I do not want belts on a normal bus because the buckles get used as weapons.
50 years driving a school bus. I remember red, white & blue school buses.
Seat belts are an additional safety measure. No seat belts is your opinion, but just look up fatal Accidents/ School Buses. Enough said.

Easy to replace, but they usually last MANY years, our igniter is now 14 years old, and still works fine.

RE: Reserve America $59.95 charge

Who says that you have to live in a foreign country to scam us in unwanted charges, we have those same type of people who try this every day, scam us out of our dollars in unwanted charges. Gift card's are among the best in this practice.

RE: 5th wheel pivot point?

Hard question to answer, I would go to an open parking lot, place a safety cone out there, and practice backing around the cone. Do not forget about your trailers height as it might contact the building overhang.
Practice is the only way you will know and learn your trailers traits.

RE: Yellowstone Park Visit

Again thanks for the great suggestions. We are not able to do dry camping as we have a fifth wheel with out a generator.
Even though you do not have a generator, By using your battery only, you should be able to get about two days of camping. Run your fridge on propane, cook everything outside, or on your gas range. Run water pump only when necessary.
OH, and park next to a camper with a generator, Just in case, and piece of mind. You can always jump your trailers battery with your truck batteries, if needed.
Try Dry Camping, it might be just fun, and prepare you for that what if situation.

RE: If you dont travel with the FW tank full???

Will usually travel with all tank empty, when going to a campground that I know. If hitting the open road, Usually 10 gallons in the Fresh tank, and have my drinking water the camper. NO matter what some campers do, I DO NOT drink water from the Fresh Water Tank. I suppose if I was dying of thirst, I might consider this option. Maybe.

RE: Yellowstone Park Visit

Download a map of the park prior to your visit. The road around the park is LONG, about 100 Miles? I think that as you enter the park from the North, you want to go Right when you hit the junction, this will take you to Old Faithful. The area behind this landmark, has may other features along it's trails.
Take your time, as there is a lot to see.

RE: Using a 5th wheel to transport stuff

Arrange to rent a U Haul type trailer, ONE WAY. Hook it up in NY, and drop it off in SC when done. Easiest way to go.

A hike to Jenny Lake is advised, you can even take a power boat across the lake to Cascade Canyon. No swimming, as this lake is VERY COLD.

RE: Do I need a bigger Truck

Gas or Diesel powering your TV? Many posts on people pulling trailers that weigh # 10.000 plus with a 1500 series truck. I say if you have a Diesel TV, you are right on the upper limits in towing.

Have been using a manual slide hitch for these past 14 years and probably have used the slide feature a few times per year. Could I have maneuvered the fiver without it, probably, BUT having the slide feature made the task easier.

RE: Funeral Edict?

The real danger when in a funeral procession is the laggers. That is, on long processions, the tail end gets separated from the lead vehicles, thus when going through a regulated intersection, these lagger's place themselves in real danger when going against a red signal. I have responded to a few of these accidents over the years due to this very fact. Police, Fire, Military, Political personnel usually have traffic control at every crossing, but the average joe has only the lead vehicle with a flashing light to lead the way.
Even though funeral processions have the legal right of way, sometimes this does not turn out to well if you are involved in an accident also.

RE: 32' tt vs 40' 5ver

There are many rule lengths in different State, and Federal parks. So it is a hard question to answer. Some have 27' as a standard, but other have no limit to size. If you have what is considered a large RV, you might be limited to certain sites and sections in the park. But In most cases, your RV size will not be an issue.

RE: Newbie need advise for the length of TT

You do realize that with that trailer, fully loaded, it will weigh about 2 thousand pounds more than your TV. Sometimes we are asking to much from our TV, even though it is rated to tow or haul that much.
Many of the state and federal parks have trailer length limits, but in canada that might be different.

RE: Leaving home for long time

Turn the water off for sure. On our last vacation, our dining partners suffered a $ 300,000 thousand dollar damage to there home due to a broken water pipe. Check how long mail can be stopped, 90 days is LONG. Credit card bills? utility bill, eve though nothing is running, there still might be a charge. Any job you do now, consider who will do that when you are gone.
A relative or friend stopping by every few days or weekly is preferred.
