Large trucking companies drive maybe 100.000 miles per year per unit. They are very cost conscious. If running a K&N filter saved them money and did NOT damage the engine all of them would be using that filter. They DO NOT. Moisheh

We were recently in Q and I stopped to fill up the toad. A fellow Canadian was having trouble as he had a Canadian card. I punched in my US Zip and it woked fine. Lorne and Lorraine have given the bset answer. If the computer is looking for your actual zip code the adding 0's does NOT work. Otherwise you could enter any valid zip code.Try 90210! Moisheh

Iguana: I should have expanded that post. I was referring to the shops where immigrants are forced to work for nothing. Highly illegal and they really are slaves. But unusual in Canada and the USA. Nor does it make what was reported any different. Stan: In most areas the Pemex workers ARE paid well. This story was about workers in one region. Many of the Pemex workers are very unionized and I think I did mention that fact. Refinery workers have one of the strongest unions in N.A. They have contracts that state what jobs each worker can do. If a job is eliminated for any reason ( plant is old and shut down, new machinery eliminates a job) they are not required to do any retraining or work in another plant. These workers simply stay home and receive full wages. Pemex plant workers are famous for being DEAD and the paychecks still are sent out and somehow cashed. More like criminals(dead or alive) than union members. Pemex stations are sometimes Company owned and some are franchises. The wages are different for each type. I have my favorite station and always tip the attendant. Many Mexicans do not tip but that article stated that in the Mexico City region tipping is commonplace. Moisheh

Why mention what happens in other countries. The fact that some workers in Canada may be underpaid does not change what is happening in Mexico. If you want to discuss the plight of Canadian workers try some organized labour website. Or the Communist Party of Canada. One should not paint all of Canada with one brush. Workers in Manitoba are not paid less than the minimum wage. Probably the same in Saskatchewan and all the other left leaning Provinces. The Americans on this forum would die if they knew all the labour laws that abound in Canada. Moisheh

playaboy: Your comments remind me of a discussion I had with a Mexican friend about those who are Chueco. He simply stated that this is part of the culture but came from the Spanish heritage not the Native heritage. None of us will live long enough for this type of mordida to end. Chris: This article was in many newspapers and some had more info. The union that is supposed to protect these workers did file a complaint and nothing happened. Not unusual. Moisheh

A Fleetguard Engineer states that you should not change the filter unless the Filter Minder shows the filter is dirty. Opening up the filter system allows dust to enter. I might add that he claims that almost all MH manufacturers install filters that are too small. He does not like the Ecolite filters for that reason. I think they use small filters as space is a problem. Moisheh

Lew: If you read that article the point will be very clear. Apparently there are so called employees who make 60 pesos a day and even have to pay the Tanker driver . Pay the person in charge of that island, pay for uniforms, pay the boss if they do not sell additives and cover any losses due to theft. That is not employement it is slavery. No different than the sweat shops in New York. This occurs in the Mexico City area where one company owns the stations. I was shocked. Weren't you concerned? The only aving grace is that perons who live in that area do tip well. ( not 5 pesos) The selling of jobs is not unusual in Mexico. Government employees often sell their job when they retire but those jobs have benefits and the pay is fabulous. It is ironic that the Pemex employees we encounter in other areas have good jobs and are mostly unionized and in this area slavery is being practiced. We all encounter Pemex workers in our travels and I thought others would want this information. Traveling in another country involves knowing something about the culture. Both the good and the bad. I am surprised that a few of the Left Coast make the rich pay people have not commented. Moisheh

Trap: One piece of free advice. I think that Monaco is fudging the list price of their units. I have seen or heard of 3 persons getting some very big discounts. I have also noticed that many of the Monacos have higher list prices than say 2 years ago. MUCH HIGHER. It is hard to compare as the units have changed but I think the old 25% is meaningless for a Monaco product. I also note you are from Alberta. You could check with a US dealer to keep your local one honest. Good Luck! Moisheh

I know you will love this unit. I guess I am still in wait and see mode as far as the engine. Fortunately we have an 08 Dynasty and I am not in the market for another unit. At least not today!!!I can only see one other possible drawback. One would have to place a lot of confidence in Navistar's staying power in the RV industry. Sales for all the mfrs. are horrible. especially DP's. Monaco has been slow to get everything going and they have zero experience in handling RV dealers and RV owners. (unless you count the workhorse brake fiasco). Of course in today's marketplace there could be other mfrs. who will not be able to survive!! Strange times.

It's not the power that bothers me. School buses equipped with the Maxforce engines have been problematic. They are extremely noisy. Resale value of a MH with Navistar power will always be poor. I also wonder about service. Cummins is not new to working on MH's. They have techs who know that access is sometimes from the inside and wear clean clothes and booties. Navistar may not provide this level of service. If you do not do your own servicing Cummins can service your gennie and engine. Navistar will not have gennie parts or Onan techs. When a Cummins dealer orders parts there are no freight charges. I don't know how Navistar will handle the freight but I know that Workhorse charges freight. Does Navistar have a customer support hotline? Navistar's reputation among truckers is not what I would call stellar. Not needing DEF is a big plus as long as Mavistar can keep their EPA certificationb. According to all the other engine mfrs. this may be a problem. EGR will make for lots of engine heat. Here is some info that I gleaned from another forum. Most are comparing the Maxforce 10 to an ISC so that would make it a downgrade from the ISL. I certainly undertsand your dilemna as the unit is just so gorgeous and the floorplans are great. One question: Does the Maxfoce have an engine brake or an exhaust brake? No engine brake would be a deal breaker for me. "The ISB6.7L for 2010 and later will require the use of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) which is a urea water solution that is required to meet the emissions requirements set by the EPA for MY 2010 and later engines. The Maxxforce engine does not use DEF systems but has a more complex system in that it uses twin turbochargers, a low pressure stage feeding a high pressure stage. Any issues with turbos could mean the replacement of two turbos not one as in the case of the Cummins engine. International chose not to use SCR (selective catalyst reduction) as a means to clean the exhaust. The SCR process uses a fine mist of DEF sprayed into the exhaust ahead of the catalyst to reduce the oxides of nitrogen. Maxxforce is trying to accomplish the same by forcing more air into the engine to reduce emissions. The forerunner to the Maxxforce engines that used the same technology was the Caterpillar ACERT engines with twin turbos. They had plenty of problems with those when they were issues. Even when there were no issues, the twin turbos and associated air plumbing make for more engine complexity and higher repair bills. " Moisheh

Ed: At the risk of reapeating myself Your info is always relevant to pickup trucks. Motorhomes with large diesel engines are quite different( ISL,ISM and ISX) Our ISL is very sensitive to the Mexican fuel. We do add a slight amount of this fuel as a safety factor( never know when you will be stuck somewhere and have to run the gennie. Maybe 75 litres to 65 gallons. This does not affect anything. But twice I tried 150 litres to about 50 gallons ( call it 50/50) and within 150 miles it went into a full active regen. In 35,000 mils those 2 regens were the only full ones we have ever had. A few times we had the quicky version. The full regen is scary. There is so much heat you can smell it from the front of the MH. The rear "hatch" is extremely hot and when I opened it anything metal is too hot too touch! The good thing about Mexican diesel is that it has a higher cetane rating. Our Bluebird runs like a charm on this fuel. Others with older MH's have also reported better performance. If I had a PU or MH that required DEF I would make sure I had lots before crossing the border. You might wait forever for a delivery from the USA! You mentioned NAPA but I have yet to see a NAPA store in Sonora. Lots of Autozones. Moisheh

Blue Ox Pricing and more

We have been using a Blue Ox Aventa II for the last 8 years. Great Tow Bar but you have to make sure the toad is straight before unhooking as it puts a lot of strain on one side. The pins will not come out even if you push on the leg release. Most time it is just fine. Sometimes I have to start the toad and move a few inches. Not a big deal. Blue Ox went through this bar @ q twice and it works fine. The last time I fought with the pins started to think of switching to the Aventa LX. This is the bar with the ball swivel. It also has offset pivot lugs. These 2 items are supposed to eliminate the unhooking problems. I have only used the new bar for one short trip and it was a breeze to unhook. Some of you may remember a thread on how Blue Ox has a minimum advertised price for their equipment. This is another term for price fixing. Although the bars have not really increased in price the dealers are prevented from doing big discounts. That LX bar is about $150 higher in price. BUT if you do some searching there are dealers who will sell for less. I won't mention the name of the dealer that sold me the bar but if you PM me I will reply! BTW: Very few dealers actually stock Blue Ox products. Blue Ox has a factory ship program for all the dealers. IMHO still the best Tow bar available. Moisheh
