RE: Day Night Blinds

Agree with donn0128, easy to do, just takes patience. I have ordered string from Specialty Blinds, got it at Joann Fabrics and even Wal Mart and dyed it the color I wanted. I've showed several people how to re string them. Try it, what can happen, if you can't figure it out then take it to a "blind" repair person.

RE: Fifth Wheels

We have lived fulltime in a 5th wheel since March '06, at various times we have carried firewood, ladder, our "maytag" (firetub) & metal holder, front end stabilizer & 2 5 gal cans fuel. We don't carry firewood anymore. There is room for "stuff" in the bed, it just has to sit lower than the bed height or the 5th wheel pin box might hit it when turning. There are no dumb questions, we all started sometime with little to no knowledge of what we were doing.

RE: full timing starts in 9 days!

Congrats! You did say "new trailer"? Allow some time to take it back to the dealer for last minute details/repairs, whatever. Nothing is perfect. Then go for it!!

RE: Where are you workkamping this summer?

After working 2 winter seasons with a county park, 3 more winter seasons with a CA state park, 3 summer seasons at a MT state park, 1 summer season at a NV state park we took the summer off last year and traveled from CA to the east coast. A looong trip, but beautiful. We are finishing up our 4th winter season on the CA coast and traveling to MT, SD, MO, AR & OK, then back here for the winter season again! Only 5,200 miles this year! Can't wait to hit the road on July 1

RE: North Carolina July vacation

We park hosted for a month in Hanging Rock SP, close to Danbury, NC. It's a charming area, many small towns. It's about 30 mi to Winston-Salem. The park is beautiful, 2 waterfall areas, many hiking trails and the cg sites are large, no hookups, but nice bathhouses. They have a swim lake in the cg but not sure if you can canoe on it, it's kind of small. Someone wrote a book on the quirky small stores around the area.

RE: Applying for social security

I just did the same thing, although I applied by telephone because my ex spouse is deceased, they want some different info. Anyway, I gave them my SD address but we spend the winters in So CA and they wanted that address, sort of like a permanent and a temp address. It's no big deal to them. They just want to know where to send you info, if needed. When we leave here in June I will go to the SS website and remove the CA address and change it to SD. Since the $$ is direct deposited very little mail comes from them.

RE: montana camping

2 state parks, Missouri Headwaters, between Bozeman & Butte, right off I 90. Three rivers come together to form the Missouri river, Lewis & Clark stayed there. And Lewis & Clark Caverns has a campground at the bottom of the hill, they were supposed to put some hookups in there. Go through the caverns while there.

RE: Camping Memberships - how many do you have?

Good Sam & Passport America. Agree with past-MIdirector, we also stay at city, county, fairground & casino campgrounds when we can. We park host for 6 months and travel 6 months, even at the price of a resale membership I can't justify the cost for a Coast 2 Coast membership. We had a temp membership a few years ago when they offered it at $75 for one year and liked it but until we travel more we find many bargains, mostly with Passport America.

RE: THANK YOU & ?

You're welcome! We have been park hosting for 6 years, mostly volunteering at state parks. Most state park budgets have been cut, so it makes us feel good that we are helping in some small way. We really like it and and choose our location first, usually close to relatives. Sometimes campers ask really dumb questions, like "What time do the dolphins come by?", but we have met really nice people from all over the world. It's amazing how many people travel to the US and rent a Cruise America to see as much as they can in 6 weeks. For us it's been a great way to spend quality time close to family members and have a free place to park. We plan to do this as long as we can

RE: RV Parks in Las Vegas

X2 on the Las Vegas RV Resort, nice weekly rates, the only place that has 24 hr security. It's an older resort but clubhouse and bathrooms updated. Pool was really nice as were all the workampers and the resort was immaculate. The sites were not as close to each other as Sam's Town

RE: Trip of A Lifetime

We've been fulltiming for 6 years although we only get to travel 6 mos of the year due to budget constraints. We park host for 6 months. Visit as many of the national parks or national seashores as you can, really beautiful. We just did that trip last summer and believe me, it's a big, big trip. We saw so many beautiful sights, New Orleans, Biloxi, anywhere on the FL gulf coast, all the forts along the east coast and learning about the civil war battles, Savannah, Charleston, Outer Banks (Kitty Hawk),DC, Gettysburg, Pocano's in PA, & Niagra Falls. In other years we've visited Yosemite, Mesa Verde, Arches NP, Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore, Mt Ranier, Mt St Helens, there's so much to see and so little time to do it. We had to cut out Maine and further north, just too many miles. We plan to fly back to DC and rent a car to see that part of the country in a few years, won't take the rv that far again unless we can take a year to do it. As others have said get your golden age pass, join Passport America and set aside emergency funds for repairs. We got 2 flat tires from the very rough PA turnpike. Good luck & happy travels.

RE: Thetford Smarttote

Good advice from other posters, my 2 cents is buy a Barker blue boy, not a Thetford. We have one so, trust me, I know what I'm talking about. The design of the Thetford does not allow you to drain all the "stuff" out of it. No matter how much we rinse it doesn't all come out, a design flaw. If you look at it you can see why, the drain hose is located so that liquid goes down beside it, into the bottom side of the tote and you can't get it all out. Otherwise it works fine.

RE: black streaks

I have used diluted Awesome for some troublesome streaks or stains, but don't anymore. FYI, Awesome will damage your gel coat or fiberglass front or back cap, it's so strong it removes the shine. Awesome is a good cleaner for a lot of stuff, I just wouldn't use it on the 5'r again.

RE: Fun and Games at Flying J

X2 on what rockhillmanor said, what idiot designed those Flying J rv pumps that have the fuel island, dump station & propane all together?? We quit using them years ago, not because of pricing, but due to the poor design. IF you were able to fill with fuel, then you had to try to pull that 50 feet of truck & 5'r out of there without a car backing into you from the front of the store. Too many nerve wracking exits, we buy fuel from someone that makes it easy in & out.

RE: Coast to Coast / Good Neighbor Parks S.D. in July

We stayed at Hart Ranch several years ago and were disappointed. It was located close to Mt Rushmore but we didn't find it to be very clean. There was a lot of dog poo between our site & the restroom. You could say that's not Hart Ranch's fault, just lazy dog owners. Did you check rvparkreviews.com?

RE: Texas or SD for permanent address

You don't have to go to SD to register a vehicle there. We signed up with one of the mail forwarding services and they register your vehicles while you are on the road. We registered our vehicles while in CA, then 1 year later went there to get our driver's license. My Home Address in Emery, SD has been great. Call them for info 888-494-4499, or call any of the mail forwarding services in SD, any of them will give you info on registering vehicles.

RE: Commode cleaning 101

Pink mold and other nasty stuff can grow in that tube and start to really smell. I clean mine when we are dumping and the water hose is switched over to the black tank rinser. I spray scrubbing bubbles down there and let it sit for awhile then use my regular toilet brush with a string attached. I stand on the string so the brush can't fall down there. Repeat a couple of times

RE: Terrible's Lakeside RV Resort

We stayed there last year and while we liked the discounts on food in the cafe, we stayed at a site on the lake (murky pond, a better description) and should you stay there, do not stay on the lake. There are many ducks and poop everywhere, which attracts ants, which crawl up the trees and into your rv. When I complained at the office they basically said too bad! The pool surround was chipping and falling into the pool, so the pool bottom was kinda gritty. The casino is pretty smokey. After saying all that, I would stay there again, just not on the lake and I would spray for ants right after I parked.

RE: roads around oklahoma city

We just went straight through downtown on a Sunday in November, a little bumpy, just slow down, not that bad. It's much better than I 10 around New Orleans, dang, THAT was bad.
