RE: leaving fiver in Florida

Wow. Leaving the A/C on all summer while unattended? Not that I think it's dangerous, but what an expense and wear on the A/C unit. My RV sits in the hot sun all summer while not in use, and there is no A/C running.

I-75 alternative though Michigan

I've recently had someone warn me about extremely high traffic on I-75 from Ann Arbor through Bay City. He suggested an alternative northern route of taking HWY 23 into Milan, then taking a slight jog west and taking State Road 52 north until Saginaw, then rejoining I-75. Can anyone familiar with these roadways tell me if this is a viable option, or is this concern about high traffic unwarranted? Thank you.

I-77 tolls through WV

How much can I expect to pay in tolls traveling the entire length of I-77 through WV pulling a 2 axle fifth wheel? Is is true that the only section of toll road is from Charleston to the WV/VA border? Also, how many stops will I have to make along the way to pay tolls? I'll be traveling both directions on this stretch of roadway. Thank you for your help.

RE: Lynx Levelers

My experience has shown that any plastic product becomes brittle with age. I just expect it to happen with any such product. With exposed sunlight the breakdown process accelerates, in my opinion.

RE: Awning cleaning

I used a bleach solution and allowed it to sit for a time while rolled up, and was surprised when I unrolled it to find the awning looking no better whatsoever. I thought those dark spots were mildew, but instead it was just plain dirty, so hand scrubbing with a brush and cleaner, Simple Green in my case, was the only thing that removed the spots. Bleach seemed to do nothing to help my cause. I can't believe I never thought of partially unrolling the awning to reach the higher section. Instead, I struggled to use a brush with a long handle, plus got on top of the RV and reached down. All that could've been avoided by just unrolling a little at a time. Just when you thought you knew it all...

RE: Duro tires? American made??

I have Duro tires and have driven 3300 miles on them in 18 months and they look just fine. I just thought I'd throw this out among all these other reports and let you know that it's actually possible to drive over 3000 miles on new tires without the world coming to an end.

RE: Day/Nite Shades

That's a great idea to remove the "day" portion of the shade. I also never use the "day" portion, and have already restrung one shade but as the others fail, I plan to implement this idea.

RE: Freshwater hose storage ideas

I see one other person mentioned what I do with hoses, which is a laundry basket. The one I have has a circular shape to it and the handles that are built in make it very easy and sturdy to grab and move about with the weight. I use additional laundry baskets for electrical cords and most of the items I store in the pass-through area.

Good Sam Club - any disadvantages?

While making a reservation for a week long stay at a campground, they asked if I was a Good Sam Club member, which I am not, and they informed me that I could buy a membership during check-in for $12 and immediately receive a discount on my stay that would more than cover the $12. It seems to me I've read that club members reported lots of unwanted offers, mailings, etc. Can anyone share with me any reasons I should NOT join? Thanks.

James Island County Park, Charleston - traffic at Christmas

I spoke with an employee of James Island County Park a few days ago, and after I got answers to all my questions I asked if there was anything else I should know, and she voluntarily mentioned that from 5-10P I should expect a long wait to get to the park and within the park due to the popular Christmas lighting presented within the park. I'm wondering if anyone who's stayed there around Christmas time can tell me how bad this traffic gets? I don't want to put myself in the position of feeling like I can't leave the park at night. Thanks.

RE: Air bags versus Timbrens

Can someone help me understand why you'd want to adjust the pressure on airbags while traveling? Sure, I can see maybe in the beginning as you're trying to figure out what is the best pressure for your load, but the pin weight can't vary much when pulling the same unit for years, so I would think once you figure out the airbag pressure you like best, that is the pressure you use while pulling. So what's the justification for the significant additional expense of an on-board compressor and controls?

RE: air mattress in couch

Our children have no choice but to use the air mattress/couch for sleeping, so we're opening it up and closing it all the time. I fold it up and zip the bag with the following inside: fitted sheet flat sheet blanket (used under the fitted sheet for comfort and insulation) I've been doing it this way for over about 80 nights of camping, so I know it works. I am careful, however, when zipping shut by having someone push down from the top of the bag to align the zipper to ensure no extra stress on the zipper while closing. I store 2 pillows, and electric blanket as well as another blanket for the top all in the pullout drawer within the couch itself. A complete self-contained unit.

How great are performance chips for a diesel?

I have a 2006 Dodge 2500 with a 5.9 diesel. My friend thinks I’m crazy for not owning a performance chip and says it’ll give me better mileage and more performance at the same time. Something keeps telling me that something has to give, and there must be some trade-offs involved here. I’ve had no problem pulling under all kinds of terrain and circumstances, so I’m wondering how much better can it possibly be? My friend makes me feel like I’m the only diesel owner out there that doesn’t have one, so please weigh in and give me the low down on these devices and what I would expect if I owned one. Thanks.

RE: Aaaahhh! Decisions, decisions

I camp multiple times during the winter, so I reclaim my pink antifreeze by collecting it until right before it starts to turn clear into a cup and pour it back into its original container. I figure I get about 80% back this way.

RE: Winter storage and condensation

Agreeing with the other posts, I think it's vital the RV breaths, and opening just one or two windows and cracking a roof vent is plenty to allow the outside and inside atmospheric conditions to equalize. Last year was my first winter and I can now say that this is a proven method, and I fully expect the same success for all winters to come.

RE: Breakaway cable

I've never pulled my breakaway cable to see how tight the brakes grab - I guess I should. Where on the dash does a warning such as "check trailer brakes" appear? I guess you have a built-in brake controller? I guess with my setup having an aftermarket brake controller, I'd never get such a warning.

RE: Electric awning leaking from underneath

The water is dripping from the slots in the roller tube, meaning, the water is inside the tube while the awning is extended. I watched it drip during the rainstorm and the awning was not in motion. The awning does have some pooling taking place, but I don't know what I can do about this. I notice when unrolling the awning while setting up at a campsite that the fabric is often wet when it hasn't rained in days. Somehow, water is penetrating through the center when it's completely retracted. Please, someone tell me this isn't normal!

Electric awning leaking from underneath

I have a Dometic 9000 series electric awning that is just over one year old. When it rained this past weekend, I noticed water dripping from the entire length of the aluminum roller tube while the awning was extended. I figured water must be either entering through the awning fabric, or from the small exposed portion of the end of the roller tube. Upon inspection, I didn’t detect any fabric flaws. I called Dometic and they recommended rubbing paraffin wax on the seam about the roller tube, but I’ve camped far too much and haven’t noticed this in the past. Besides, the water was fairly significant, and way too much to be slipping through a seam. Any ideas? Another issue – every time during extension the awning gives a bang at the same exact point which is at about 10% of full travel. It’s catching on something but it really doesn’t slow extending the awning and it always opens. The sound just tells me something is wrong. The manual awning locks are loosened the entire time. I’m wondering if anyone else has this experience? Thanks much.

Ohio route help from Charleston to Toledo

I’ll soon be traveling through Ohio and was wondering what the best route to take pulling my fifth wheel. I’ll be traveling north through Charleston, WV and exiting the state at Toledo. It seems I can travel though Chillicothe on HWY 35 or Athens on I-77/HWY 33 into Columbus as my first dilemma, and north of Columbus I have the choice of Marysville/Kenton/Findlay to I-75 or Marion/Findlay. Can those who that has traveled these routes provide me some advice on these routes? Thanks.

RE: Landing gear lubrication?

I think you should start a WD-40 thread instead of hijacking the OP's thread.
