RE: Considering a MH

Seems like people like their Hurricanes. And the DW is starting to feel like that's the one. I had found a 2008 Newmar gasser that looked pretty nice and was much cheaper and although Newmar is well known for quality coaches, the DW looked noticeably disappointed. LOL! We're going to look at some this weekend just to see them up close. I think we'll end up in the Hurricane though. :) Thanks everyone.

RE: Considering a MH

Acts like a cheater bar on a breaker bar. The distance will amplify any torque of a trailer.I see. Thank you for explaining that.

RE: Charging Car Battery with Honda eu1000i

Now here's a dumb question for you - I shouldn't run the "real" battery charger with the generator to charge the trailer battery, right? Yes you should. How else are going to charge the battery?

RE: Revived Trailer Tire Thread (formerly on the 5th Wheel Forum

What criteria would you use when/if you were shopping for new 'ST" tires.I just make sure the tires have the appropriate weight handling capability. IMO, I think the largest problem with ST's is that they're not made by the 10's of millions like car tires and don't get the benefit of R&D and "crawling up your butt with a microscope" quality testing like car tires do.

RE: Coach batteries and alternators

Sorry to be a PITA, but when encountering someone who seems to know more on a subject, I turn into a sponge. ;)Don't worry, he's had FAR dumber people (me) asking him questions. I think you're good. :)

RE: Time left from battery

I got a surprize this week when I tried to use my Vector charger at -6 C (21 f). It immediately gave me a fault code. I guess it is temperature compensated and will not work at those (mild) temperatures?I think mine works in those temps. However the battery full function is only displayed in AH (or %), so the W display is limited to live data. If one has a desire to know how many watts the battery contains this meter doesn't help. Thanks Mex and CA. I don't own a Trimetric anyways and my Victron doesn't display watts at all.

RE: Considering a MH

If he is towing, in Ca he is limited to 55 mph We seldom go over 60 to save fuel. 5.9 300 HP turbo cumminsYes, this is true. BTW, my truck while towing the horse trailer is stable as hell, I don't understand why I would need a 228" wheelbase to tow with a MH. I would prefer at least a 200" (the Hurricane is 208") though.

RE: Considering a MH

I don't recall if the model and year you are looking has one but on some of them have rear storage bay with three doors. The third door is across the back that will allow the hay bale storage. I have seen some that had the 3rd door. The 31J does not but the two doors are huge and more than enough room to put the hay bale in the back.

RE: Time left from battery

Hi PT, Love the graph! OK, so I have an Interstate 12V Deep Cycle SRM-24 battery. With my Vector "Smart" charger running at 2amps to charge the battery it takes about 24 hours or less to obtain a "Full" reading. If this is the time the graph is referring to for charging my battery in storage then I'm nowhere near the hours the graph shows it would take to achieve 90% or full charge. That brings up the question, does repeat charging add up or does it have to be a continuous "100" hours of charging? Has to be a continuous charge. If you use the battery, then you have to "start over". At this stage, per some previous advice, going to desulfate x 3 then charge, use for the weekend, then charge x 4. Am I in the ballpark or still clueless? You need a glass float hydrometer. After each equalization with the Vector, check your specific gravity (SG). Unfortunately, you don't have a baseline to go from but generally 1.275 @ 77F is 100% full. Also, what is the difference between charging at 2amps, or 10 or 35? Those are the options on my charger. Yes, generally the more amps the faster the charge BUT those amps must be in conjunction with a high voltage (your charger does 14.7V compensated for temperature if you have the VEC1093DBD). I believe the interstate grp 24 is ~82 amp hours (Ah) so a safe charge rate is ~20 amps. Thanks

RE: Considering a MH

FWIW my 35J has fit into a 18' slot in a WA State park ;) I did hang over the pavement part of the site a wee bit.... so while size does matter it may not matter as much as you fear.:) I know we could fit in smaller spots. I'm banking on that honestly. We'd still like to keep it on the smaller side. 34 foot max is the limit we set. I just don't want to piss the DW off by not getting into horse camping sites because we're too long. Also, weight goes up and we do a lot of mountain driving. Prefer to keep it as light as possible. We were told the Hurricane and the Winnie's will do 50 mph up the grapevine. That's a good benchmark and perfectly acceptable. Thanks again everyone.

RE: Considering a MH

i think the hurricanes are a good unit for the money, but i think you should get one with the 22000 chassis to have adequate towing ability, like the other poster said.22,000 chassis isn't hard to get in a shorter unit but 228" wheelbase puts us in longer units. We're trying to keep it somewhat short to fit into the campgrounds we currently frequent. I'll take a look at the Winnie's again.

RE: Considering a MH

the winnebagos will have a fiberglass roof, I don't think the Thors, etc. do bumpyThe Thor's don't. I climbed up there to check. I'd rather have the fiberglass but it's not a deal breaker. Good news is the DW isn't totally sold on the Thor meaning I can still convince her of other brands. Odd requirement: need to be able to store a bail of hay in the MH storage somewhere BUT the DW is already thinking of alternate storage in the horse trailer. Still open for changes.

RE: Considering a MH

Thanks Tahiti. I do plan on weighing the coach when we get it loaded up. Fortunately for us, we travel light so I hope that will give us enough capacity for the trailer.

RE: Coach batteries and alternators

As for the alternator drive, you will need either a poly V belt or at least a double V belt configuration in order to drive a 250 amp alternator. Thanks for posting this. It's much better than saying "you'll have trouble" and not explaining why.
