RE: Replacing G/Year Marathons with What? See P. 4

BF Goodrich Commercial TA LT 265/75/16
3415 lbs. 80 psi 15/32" 49 lbs. 7-8" 7.5" 10.5" NA 31.4" 662 US
Same tire in 235/85/16
3042 lbs. 80 psi 15/32" 45 lbs. 6-7" 6.5" 9.3" NA 31.4" 662 US
You can see that the 265 is 1.2" wider and needs a wider rim. If I could fit these that's what I would run.
Go talk to your tire shop. Tell them you have a problem with trailer tires and you want to run the 265s and they will mount them right up.
Because the 265s are wider and run at a lower pressure for a given load, they ride better. And because they don't have a huge sidewall bulge, the trailer pulls easier. Its like having the right sized tire on the trailer !
If the 265s don't stand up, I'd get 275/65R20LREs mounted up. They are rated at 3750 pounds each.
My 08 SD has a GVWR of 11,500 pounds on 4 275/65R20s. Those tires are clearly up to the task of being under a 5th wheel trailer if the 265s aren't. But so far the 265s are doing great. I'll report back if I have any trouble.

RE: Replacing G/Year Marathons with What? See P. 4

Chris, you and I had this discussion before I put 265s on my trailer.
I had a discussion about this very topic with my local, reputable tire shop. If the tire mounts up properly, its not a problem. And with 90% of 265s, it won't be a problem.
Well we all have our opinions! They are still not sized to 7K axles.
The trailer came with 6K axles and our GY Marathons were load range D, rated at 3,000 pounds, not load range Es like my new tires are.
I think that going from LRD to LRE bought me some margin of safety as did replacing the crappy leaf suspension and 6K axles with nice, beefy 7K torsion axles.
Really, with these changes its a different trailer.

RE: 5th Wheel Backup cameras

I want to add a backup camera to our trailer too.
Are the cameras in those links IR ? If not, how do you see at night ?
I am using Foscam wireless IR cameras on our home survelence system and I couldn't be happier with them.
http://www.foscam.us
http://foscam.us/products/foscam-fi8904w-outdoor-wireless-ip-camera-3.html
I am thinking of using one on the back of our trailer as well. Obviously you need an Ethernet capable computer device to view them. Any browser will work.
The Foscam cameras run on 5 volts. I'll use a 7805 voltage regulator to drop the 12V down to 5V.

Weighed the rig today and will be getting LT235 85R16E rated tires.
I'd go with 265s.
Just my $0.02.

RE: Need to repair the parts of the floor

This thread has me really nervous because our trailer suffered extensive leaking to the point where the carpet is now molding. Its a 2011 and Coachmen won't touch it.
5 years from now am I going to be putting a new floor in too ?

RE: Replacing G/Year Marathons with What? See P. 4

I replaced the GY Marathon 235/80R16s with generic LT265/75R16 steering tires after the sidewall on one of the GYs developed a bulge. Our trailer weighs about 13K and I pull it on a lot of secondary highways of dubious quality.
I pulled it about 7,000 miles last summer with not a hint of a problem, except the tread on the front tires seems to have worn more than the rear. But I only took a quick look and didn't measure it either.
I like the fact they carry the trailer at 65 PSI instead of 80 PSI. They seem to roll easier and ride better too.
I don't understand why trailers need special tires when the trailer tires carry about the same load as the tires on a truck, about 3,000 pounds per tire.

RE: Kodiak disc brake upgrade

I went electric drum with 6K axles to Kodiak disks via an axle swap. Went from leaf springs to torsion axles in the process. Best money (about $1500) I ever spent.
In my mind, its not a "nice to have", its a safety feature these trailers should come with from the factory. Like air bags or seat belts on a car.

RE: 06 Ford- repair plan-do I need

2 words. Cummins swap.
You'll get a really good buck for your 6.0l and the 6.7 Cummins, properly tuned, is a beast.

RE: F150 goes Aluminum

I think its about time that these trucks had aluminum body panels. They are lighter and corrosion resistant. Bring it on.

RE: F150 goes Aluminum

Another cheap way to meet the regulations and pass the costs to the consumer. Repairs on any body damage will triple the current repair costs.
HDTs have aluminum cabs. They seem to be just as fixable as steel cabs. MIG with a wire feeder or TIG weld aluminum just fine.

RE: WARNING: Tailgate theft on the rise

My Ford trucks have been hit 5x in the last 2 years. Yes, my 08 got hit before Christmas.
We are taking a number of measures, including
1) The truck always gets parked in the garage.
2) A high quality video survelance system has been installed on the house with several cameras pointed directly at our parked vehicles
3) A video camera that transmits to the server in the house will be installed in my truck(s).
Various other measures that I don't want to describe publicly.

RE: WARNING: Tailgate theft on the rise

Had my Ford tailgate stolen in 2005 and my buddy had his 2008 GMC tailgate stolen last year.
I always lock my tail gate! I think I will add a hose clamp as well.
Theives know how to pop the locks on Ford trucks, including the tail gate lock. Takes them all of 30 seconds with the right tool. I kid you not.

RE: WARNING: Tailgate theft on the rise

One day I was letting my tailgate down on my 2008 F250 and the straps were off. I then realized someone tried to steal mine. I was lucky because a few months before, I put in a 40 cent hose clamp on the pivot point. After talking with my neighbors, 4 vehicles in my new neighborhood had theirs stolen off their Ford trucks in recent months.
Thank you for that tip ! I'm off to get a hose clamp.

RE: Newbie: top ten must haves for new 5th wheel

A converter that can actually charge the batteries in a decent amount of time and at least an option to have an inverter installed AND a decent sized battery bank. I would pay more for that.
The Prosine 2.0 has a 100A charger built in. Plus the 50A charger that is built into the trailer.
If you have solar on the roof you start every weekend with a fully charged bank, plus what it does charge while boondocking sure adds up in keeping the battery bank out of the red.
The big thing about solar/battery bank/inverter isn't that you have power. Its that you don't need a powered site all the time.

RE: Newbie: top ten must haves for new 5th wheel

Over 200amps of battery power for dry camping & a 2kw inverter to power things without having to fire up the portable genny.
You mean 200 amp HOURS of battery energy storage ?
Make it more like 660 aH, ie 6 golf cart batteries. And make the inverter a Prosine 2.0. And 3-500 watts of solar.
Once you have it, you'll NEVER be without it.
People can live without a lot of things, but when you don't have any power, you are sitting in a dark, cold trailer doing nothing.

RE: Surveillance Camera on Exteria of Our RV?

+1 for the "camera trap" items. Downside is that you likely will end up just catching any thief's hoodie instead of any positive identification. However, it should help with dealing with any potential insurance claim disputes if one does arise.
The solution to this problem is multiple cameras all around your property. One or more of them is going to get his/her face.

RE: Surveillance Camera on Exteria of Our RV?

I certainly do have a solution for you because I'm doing something very similar with my truck.
You'll need to put a solar panel on your trailer or plug it in to keep the 12V battery charged.
I am using this type of wireless transmitter/receiver.
http://www.dinodirect.com/1-2GHz-800mW-15-Channel-Digital-Wireless-AV-Receiver-and-Transmitter-ESXF800mW.html
You can buy this sort of setup at various places on the web.
You can pick any sort of CCV camera with an RCA output. I recommend a camera with night IR capability.
You then connect it to your computer with one of these
http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-2-0-VIDEO-TV-DVD-VHS-AUDIO-CAPTURE-ADAPTER-/250863172322?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a689c3ae2
They go by the name EasyCap(ture). Most have 4 channels of input.
I am monitoring the system with an open source package called Zoneminder, but there are others.

RE: Buyer beware: Forest River warranty and slide sealing sucks.

I too own a FR product and have had excellent response from both the dealer and factory involving my warranty repairs. Not only did the factory extend my warranty on the repaired items for 2 more years the dealer stood behind the repair for one year. Although my dealer did a satisfactory repair I contacted the factory and voiced my concerns over further problems that might develop. They assured me that the problem was documented at the factory and that they would stand behind any future problems related to the original repair. You can't always depend on your dealer to carry through as it appears your hasn't.Had you contacted the factory prior to your warranty expiring I think you would have had satisfactory results from FR, IMO
Everything is fully documented. I did all my correspondence via email or in writing. I have everything.
The more I think about this the more I think that I should take this to small claims court.

These issues existed prior to the end of the warranty period and that can be easily proven.
FWIW, I have not given the full story on this trailer. There are things written items from the initial sale that have not been satisfied.
