RE: F-150 EB - Tow, or Max Tow Package?

OK, the consensus is go with the Max package. But:
It's interesting the standard tow ratings are the same with 3.55 and 3.73 gears. I've looked at a lot of window stickers on line and have never seen a truck with 3.73's w/o having the Max package.
One TT we looked at spec'd at 6000# dry, 8000# gross, and we wouldn't be putting 2,000# in it. 7,000# gross would probably be a more realistic figure.
The current trailer will be a walk in the park for the EB.
I asked the Ford chat line about why the increase with the Max tow and was told they use a larger radiator than in the standard tow package (51 tubes vs 41 tubes) - no change in springs, axles, or tires.
BTW - You need the 3.73 gears to get the Max package and they're $200+ more than the 3.55's. And the Max package is another $550+ over the standard package on top of that.
uterep - I can get X-plan from work but the dealer is below that price already.
parkersdad - GM's 2013 ratings dropped minimally and they have nothing to compete with the EB. I'd be surprised if Fords ratings take a drastic drop.
BenK - I could go with a D/A and end it all but it would be overkill for the purpose and on my wallet!
Hey - I'm towing with a 4.2 / 3.42 Envoy now, anything will be an improvement!

F-150 EB - Tow, or Max Tow Package?

I've pretty much decided on a F-150 EB Supercab for the next tv.
With 3.55 gears it has a tow capacity of 9700#, GCWR of 15,400# with the tow package.
3.73's and the Max package gets a 11,300# tow rating and 17,100# GCWR.
My current HTT weighs 3850# dry, 5,000# gross (I never did weigh it.) A 5-er is not in our plans but a bigger TT may be. It would probably be 25' or so, maybe 8,000# max gross.
So - I really don't think I need the Max tow package. It's DW & me, no kids, one (diabetic) cat, and a canoe. Yeah, nobody wishes for less truck when they're towing but it'll be my daily driver too. And there are more trucks w/ the standard tow packages on the lots than ones with the Max package. I'll transfer the Prodigy brake controller and McKesh mirrors from my current tv.
Am I missing anything here?

RE: Pricing new F150?

Sheesh, I got a better quote than X-plan on my own. Now the dealer is looking for a F150 EB with the right equipment on it!

RE: FORGET SOMETHING ?

Not RV'ing, but we used to backpack / canoe camp.
We were prepping for a trip and DW asked "Do you have toilet paper?" to which I replied "Yes."
What I thought she meant was "Do you have toilet paper for yourself?" What she really meant was "Do you have enough toilet paper for the both of us?"
It was close but we made it.

RE: Our new F150 HD Ecoboost

Congratulations, been researching the EcoBoost!!
Not to derail the thread, but when I try to "build" an F150 on Ford's website, I do not see Max Tow/Max Haul packages?? Is it only in certain configurations?
Thanks,
Jack
You need to spec the 3.5EB and 3.73 gears to get the Max Tow box to light up. I had the same issue trying to build mine until I chatted w/ a Ford rep on line.
A tidbit - with the standard tow package the trailer capacity is the same with 3.55 and 3.73 gears (at least in the Supercab.) I asked Ford, their reply was the Max tow package got a radiator with another row of cooling tubes over the one in the Standard tow package. If you look at window stickers on line you won't see 3.73 gears w/o the Max trailer package.
It's too bad Ford doesn't offer extendable tow mirrors as a separate option with the Standard tow package.

RE: north pole cg or lake placid koa

Never been to the KOA but we like the 100 Acre Woods section at North Pole. Internet hookup (cable modem) is extra $$$$, I can't remember if there is public wifi access in the game room or not.
Others have covered the main attractions, DW and I liked the boat tour on Lake Placid (the village is on Mirror Lake.) Oh, and you can walk around Mirror Lake and check out the real estate.
The Cobble Hill trail (off Cobble Hill Rd, off Mirror Lake Dr) is a fairly easy hike in Lake Placid.
Check http://www.townofwilmington.org/trailmaps.php for hiking trails, we've both hiked and snowshoed the Flume Trail and climbed to Flume Knob.

RE: Need advice on 2 new tow vehicle scenarios...

So just what size / weight trailer is in your plans?
I've looked long and hard at a F150 w/ EcoBoost, it'll most likely be my next vehicle. Actually, if I didn't have to have 500-1000 miles break-in for towing I'd probably have one by now. Ones with the Max tow packages are far less common than one with the standard tow package. Again, it depends on what you plan to tow if you want the Max package or not.
My guess is gas mileage while towing will be about the same with a V-8, V-10, or EcoBoost.

RE: Is a Half Tonner Enough Today?

I've been researching the F150 w/EB.
There are 2 tow packages, the Tow Package and the Max Tow Package.
The Max Tow Package starts with 3.73 gears as mandatory. Both packages include upgraded radiators and trans coolers, but the Max package has a 51-row radiator vs a 41-row radiator for the regular tow package (via Ford Chat line.) This explains the increased trailer weight and payload for the Max package vs standard package with 3.73 gears in both.
Interesting - for the standard Tow Package both the 3.55 and 3.73 gears have the same trailer rating (9700# for the SuperCab 4X4.)
420 lb-ft of torque at 2500RPM. It should pull like a small Diesel.

RE: Travelstar parts question

Yup, what Dan said. I bought 5 new metal ones the last time I was at my local dealer, just haven't gotten around to installing them yet.
If they're not totally broken off you can rotate them 1/2-turn to a good section.

RE: A/C unit on 2004 21SS0

I had to have the AC fan replaced on my '05 21SSO (warranty.) IIRR a few people had their fans replaced, it may have been a bad batch of fans / bearings.
You can try getting on the roof, removing the A/C cover, and see if the fan turns over by hand (power off!)
