RE: Wide swings in temp with cheapo elec heaters

The Walmart Web site claims that the Vornado keeps a set temperature to within 3 or 4 degrees. That would be better than my current heater. Does that sound about right to you guys?

Wide swings in temp with cheapo elec heaters

I have read most of the electric heater threads, but I can't seem to find an answer to this problem. I have a couple of inexpensive ones, but they seem to have a problem with lag in the thermostat setting. In other words, the difference between the temp when it comes on and when it goes off can be 10 degrees (F), or even more at times. I have used two or three of the fairly cheap heaters from Walmart or Lowes, and they seem to have the same problem. (You can get a sense of how wide that swing can be by moving the thermostat dial up and down and listening for the switch operation. This works for mechanical thermostats even with the power off.)
Does anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably-priced electric heater that keeps a reasonably constant temperature?

RE: Carpet Tear-Out

I did this with an older Airstream trailer. The dinette and other fixtures were installed over the carpet. I removed as much of the interior fittings as I could and then just pulled and cut away anything else. It was a job, but worth it in the end. I used a laminate wood-look flooring, but there are lots of options.

RE: Downsizing...how small?

I think Doin It nails it. Try different size motorhomes. You might find that something between the 21 and the 32 would be perfect for you.

RE: Owners of Sprinter Chassis C MH ?

If the problem is movement when you're parked, the simples and cheapest solution might be to find some jacks to stabilize the chassis. Our Sprinter-based motorhome moves quite a bit more when parked than our old E-450-based motorhome. But then the ride is also better. Softer springs, I guess.

RE: Shower leak

I had a similar problem that required that I remove the fixed and moving glass panels and put silicone sealer not only around the panel frames but also around the bottom of the shower enclosure. The enclosure was not supposed to need caulk, and in fact is not supposed to be caulked, but that's the only way I could stop the leak.

RE: service for a sprinter

If you want service for the house part of your RV, you should look for RV shops. If you want service for the chassis, try checking at this site. They have lists of service facilities by location.

RE: Cold weather RV'ing?

Be prepared to stay longer than you expect. Once when I lived at Tahoe there was a beautiful, sunny, warm weekend that drew many people to the lake from down towards Sacramento. It started snowing Sunday and lots of those people spent the night in their cars waiting in miles-long lines trying to get out over the mountain.

RE: Couple questions on cold weather rving

It really depends on how cold it gets and for how long. I have spent winters in several campers in north Alabama, from an older Airstream to a newer C. We seldom get extremely cold weather for very long, but almost every winter we get cold snaps, with night temperatures in the teens for several days. Occasionally it stays below freezing for several days. Below freezing temperatures are common at night. I have had my freshwater tank freeze for two or three days once in the Airstream, but have not had problems otherwise as long as there is heat in the unit. I do open cabinet doors on the colder nights to let warmer air circulate. This indicates to me that most three-season campers can handle reasonably cold weather but not extended periods of sub-20s without making some concerted efforts to keep things warm.

RE: Leveling Blocks

I had some orange ones that broke under the weight of a trailer. I haven't used the yellow ones I have now. If you're considering buying, check them over and see whether they seem study enough to hold up. I wish I could tell you the brand but I can't get to that information right now.

RE: 23 Ft BT Cruiser

Our previous 24-ft Coachmen on the Ford E450 chassis had very little movement while parked so it didn't need stabilizers. Our current Sprinter-based MH rocks significantly more as we move around inside, but I doubt we will use stabilizers.

RE: Owners of Sprinter Chassis C MH ?

Our previous MH, a 24-ft Coachmen without an overhead bunk, averaged 10 mpg over about a 3500-mile trip last year. We kept to between 60 and 65 and did not tow. Our 2009 Winnebago on the Sprinter chassis with the diesel V6 is almost exactly the same length, but with a cabover bunk. We took a 1200-mile trip in August, no toad, same speeds, and averaged 15 mpg. The type of roads was somewhat different (probably averaged quite a bit flatter).
Robert Ryan - Iveco has been sold in the US for some time strictly as commercial trucks. I assume they are still available. They would definitely allow a much larger motorhome than the current Sprinter chassis.

RE: What toad for Sprinter?

Sox Fan, we have a 2001 Golf TDI 5-speed. I have considered using it, but am a little hesitant because of some conflicting opinions about the transmission lube and ground clearances. Please post your experience in setting it up for towing.

Beach-side campgrounds St Augustine to Daytona

We stayed recently near St Augustine (Bryn Mawr) and on a drive down the coast saw a couple of campgrounds right on the beach with actual ocean views. The campground where we stayed is fairly close to town and nice enough, but the dunes prevent an actual ocean view. Does anyone have any experience with any of the other campgrounds along that stretch of Highway 1?

RE: End of the E-Series?

If a smaller van can serve the needs of, say, 80 percent of Ford customers, then Ford might decide there are good reasons for dropping the E-series van and moving in that direction. Just look at how the Sprinter has eaten into the commercial van market. It's slightly smaller, lighter, more efficient and far more modern in engineering design. It might not meet the requirement for truly heavy use, but maybe something else will have to fill that need.

RE: What toad for Sprinter?

Our new motorhome has a lower weight limit for towing, and I think the Honda is a little over it. But even if it's not, we're trading it next week for a new car that can't be towed.

What toad for Sprinter?

We recently traded our Ford E-450-based Coachmen for a Sprinter-based Winnebago (love it so far), but now we're looking for a vehicle for occasional use as a toad. There are plenty of used cars that would work fine, but we are looking for something more like our old toad, a Honda CRV. I think the old Suzuki Sidekick/Cheverolet-Geo Tracker would be just about right, but the later models are bigger and heavier with V-6 and automatic. I prefer a manual and an inline 4 for those cars. It needs to be under 3500 lb. Any suggestions?

RE: St. Louis arch with a TT?

There is RV parking near the Arch. We parked our 24-foot Class C there and walked. It's not a bad walk unless you have some disabilities.

RE: DirecTV and the FCC Stick it to RVer's again!

Pairajays, there are copyright issues as well. You may have the right to receive radio broadcasts (including TV), but not everyone has the right to broadcast any content that they want to, regardless of who owns the copyright. That includes satellite broadcasters. The real issue is not what you can receive, but what the satellite broadcasters can transmit without violating copyright laws. And local broadcasters actually do have restrictions on their "freedom of speech" in FCC regulations. They can't broadcast OTA XXX-rated material, for example, and they are required to broadcast certain other types of material. But that's because the transmission wavelengths are considered to be owned by the people, not the companies using them; the broadcasters are just leasing the use of those wavelengths.

RE: Why Do Dogs Roll In Stuff?

I went camping once with my old dog. She found a cow pasture and rolled in cow manure. I had to wash her in a cold mountain stream. A little while later she went back and did it again.
I used to subscribe to the theory that as predators they did it to hide their own scent, but I have seen some animal behaviorists who think that's probably not the reason. Even they don't have a good explanation. So I guess they just like it.
