RE: Lake Tahoe area CGs

Fallen Leaf is a nice one for sure. Google South Lake Tahoe campgrounds to get the ones at the south end of the lake.

RE: Motor Home vs Car Traveling Expenses

I use a spreadsheet to do the calculation. It really depends mostly on how fuel efficient your two choices are and how much fuel costs per gallon. The RV will always use more fuel, so the cost of lodging has to compensate. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Unless cost is the real limiting factor, I think other things really make the difference. If you like waking up to early-morning sunlight streaming through tall pines and the sounds of birds, take the RV. If you hate looking for a clean place for a bathroom stop or a decent, quick sandwich for lunch, take the RV. If you need to make time to get to your destination, or if you really want to stay in a national park lodge, a car is probably a better idea. We have done both, and both have their advantages.

RE: Where is my leak?

Actually, I might try using the Fantastic Fan on reverse. The Winnebago front cap doesn't have many places to leak - clearance lights, radio antenna and skylight. The seam between the front cap and the main roof is behind the leak, so that's not the problem.

Where is my leak?

We have a 2009 Winnebago View (Sprinter-based) with the cabover bunk and an opening skylight just aft of the bunk. In the last rain, water started coming out of the skylight frame. It seemed to be running under the roof and above the ceiling from forward of that point, but I'm not sure. I suppose it might have actually run forward from the skylight frame. Nothing looks amiss on the roof. The skylight looks well sealed and so does the antenna just forward (suspiciously forward, I should say). I have some Eternabond and plan to work on it on the next sunny day, but it would be nice to have a better idea of what I'm looking for. Has anyone had a similar problem?

RE: Our first tow with the Honda Fit

We did the same thing with our CR-V, only we towed it further. I don't think the parking brake on a car with rear discs applies the brakes with as much force as the service brakes.

RE: Documentation fees

Basically, the dealer is adding a line to the purchase agreement to cover part of his cost of doing business. Most other businesses add in this cost to the selling price, but it lets dealers show a lower price while regaining the amount later, usually after you have agreed to the purchase price. I think there is no additional cost to the dealer to do documentation unless they pay the administrative staff by the piece.

RE: Wide swings in temp with cheapo elec heaters

Good point, pianotuna. I am pretty sure my new heater will do as you say.

RE: Anyone flat-towing a Suzuki SX4

wny_pat, my understanding is that an AWD SX-4 can be towed 4-down if it has a manual transmission. Some time ago I found the owner's manual online and as I remember, that's what it said. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find it online again. But the Motorhome Magazine dinghy guide for 2011 indicates that the manual transmission model can be towed 4-down. It has the same towing specifications as all Suzukis. Models with the CVT must be towed on a dolly.
The point of my post is that I wondered what people thought of the SX-4 if anyone has one.

RE: Wide swings in temp with cheapo elec heaters

I bought a better electric heater from Lowes last night. It has a digital thermostat which seems to keep the temperature within a couple of degrees of the setpoint at most. It can also be set at 45F to help prevent freezing of pipes. I forget the brand but I can check if anyone is interested. It was about $59, but there was a different model for about $37. I got the more expensive one because it had a slightly smaller footprint, although it is taller.
The place where I'm staying on a fairly long term charges for electrical use after a certain point. I think it's 100 KW-hr. I should be under that with judicious use of the electric space heater and water heater.

RE: Anyone flat-towing a Suzuki SX4

jassrnj, my parents towed a Sidekick for quite a while with good results. It was actually a pretty competent off-roader, and it did tow well. I had a nice Tracker about 7 or 8 years ago and foolishly sold it.

Anyone flat-towing a Suzuki SX4

I am considering a new(ish) vehicle to tow behind our Winnebago View, which has a 3500 lb towing limit. The Suzuki SX4 is on the list because it is a relatively cheap AWD and falls under the weight limit. It doesn't get great mileage (30 mpg highway). Apparently the AWD manual-transmission version can be flat towed. As far as I can tell Suzuki puts a 55mph/200 mile limit, but it also seems they do that for all their vehicles. Does anyone here tow an SX4? What do you think of it?

Wow. I think now is the time for everyone else to take a long RV trip, because it looks like you have sucked up all the bad luck out there for a while.

RE: Wide swings in temp with cheapo elec heaters

The Walmart Web site claims that the Vornado keeps a set temperature to within 3 or 4 degrees. That would be better than my current heater. Does that sound about right to you guys?

Wide swings in temp with cheapo elec heaters

I have read most of the electric heater threads, but I can't seem to find an answer to this problem. I have a couple of inexpensive ones, but they seem to have a problem with lag in the thermostat setting. In other words, the difference between the temp when it comes on and when it goes off can be 10 degrees (F), or even more at times. I have used two or three of the fairly cheap heaters from Walmart or Lowes, and they seem to have the same problem. (You can get a sense of how wide that swing can be by moving the thermostat dial up and down and listening for the switch operation. This works for mechanical thermostats even with the power off.)
Does anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably-priced electric heater that keeps a reasonably constant temperature?

RE: Carpet Tear-Out

I did this with an older Airstream trailer. The dinette and other fixtures were installed over the carpet. I removed as much of the interior fittings as I could and then just pulled and cut away anything else. It was a job, but worth it in the end. I used a laminate wood-look flooring, but there are lots of options.

RE: Downsizing...how small?

I think Doin It nails it. Try different size motorhomes. You might find that something between the 21 and the 32 would be perfect for you.

RE: Owners of Sprinter Chassis C MH ?

If the problem is movement when you're parked, the simples and cheapest solution might be to find some jacks to stabilize the chassis. Our Sprinter-based motorhome moves quite a bit more when parked than our old E-450-based motorhome. But then the ride is also better. Softer springs, I guess.

RE: Shower leak

I had a similar problem that required that I remove the fixed and moving glass panels and put silicone sealer not only around the panel frames but also around the bottom of the shower enclosure. The enclosure was not supposed to need caulk, and in fact is not supposed to be caulked, but that's the only way I could stop the leak.

RE: service for a sprinter

If you want service for the house part of your RV, you should look for RV shops. If you want service for the chassis, try checking at this site. They have lists of service facilities by location.

RE: Cold weather RV'ing?

Be prepared to stay longer than you expect. Once when I lived at Tahoe there was a beautiful, sunny, warm weekend that drew many people to the lake from down towards Sacramento. It started snowing Sunday and lots of those people spent the night in their cars waiting in miles-long lines trying to get out over the mountain.
