RE: A Cotton wood warning

I haven't tried this yet, but I've been told that hot water poured directly on fresh sap is effective in softening it up for easy removal. The key word is fresh; this won't work if it's been there a while and dried hard. FWIW

RE: Sunline Travel Trailers

We have a 2005 T-2553. It has been work great for us. As someone above has already said it is a little low, so we had the axles flipped and have not had a problem since. Good luck.
Ditto, except our 2553 was an '01. Traded it in on a 2753 (DW's idea, not mine!) and flipped axles on that one, too. Flipping cured bottom dragging issues in both cases.

RE: Sigh....winterized....

Yep, did mine two weeks ago. I figure I can dewinterize it in about six months. :(
I also winterized a couple of weeks ago, and as migrating snowbirds, will be dewinterizing "on the fly" early in December. That's one big reason I clear the lines with air only, no pink stuff to mess around with.

RE: Storage Box in bed of truck

I built my own in a few hours using exterior plywood, glued and screwed. Inexpensive and quite satisfactory. Designed to get the whole thing out of one sheet.

RE: Drain the last bit of water out of a water heatrer...

One inch remaining in the water heater likely wouldn't hurt anything if it froze solid....any more than one inch in an ice cube tray. Oh well, it's gone now so one less thing to worry about over the winter.

RE: Plugging in on cross country trip

Though it doesn't answer your question, you may want to follow this thread I started recently. I'm told there are a number of similar facilities in other states. clicky

RE: New place to stay in Maine

Good find, Tom. I never realized that was up there.
I live very near it, and though it's been open a little while, I hadn't
checked it out until yesterday. I was mainly interested in how they felt about RVers using the place, and was pleased when the person in charge told me they had specifically discussed that issue and chosen to welcome them. Thus far it's been under-utilized, and I was encourage to promote it among the RVing folks.
Easy 24-hour access, level sites with 110V, internet, security, pay by the hour, etc. Sounds good to me. Hope I can find similar places where I need them.

New place to stay in Maine

RVers passing through Maine this time of year have very limited options for a place to stay. Campgrounds are almost all closed for the season, and then there are the usual free places like WalMart, etc., which don't interest everyone.
My discovery today is at the new service plaza in West Gardiner, where I-95 (Maine Turnpike) and I-295 intersect. In addition to the usual long pull-through parking spaces, there are 30 equipped with innovative AireDock/HVAC units that among other things feature 110V outlets and high-speed internet connection. There is a modest hourly usage fee, which is paid on a self-service credit card reader. Learn more.
Though intended for truckers, I inquired and found that RVers are welcome, too. Usage thus far is said to be light.
In the coming weeks with increasingly cold nights, I would think this facility would be of particular interest to Canadian snowbirds in need of a place to plug in and rest for a while.

Tire Age Surprise (update)

We had quite a discussion here recently which included several negative comments about Discount Tire Direct for fulfilling their orders with tires that were older than they liked.
Well, I ordered two Maxxis tires from them anyway but included a note stating that tires older than one year were not acceptable. UPS just delivered my tires, and I immediately checked the age and found that they were both manufactured during the 13th week of this year. They came fast, too -- two days after my online order.
My experience with Discount Tire Direct was a good one, and they have gained a customer. :)

RE: Winterizing....Ugh!

When you drain and then blow the lines out does that blow the water pump enough that it won't be damaged during freezing temps?
I disconnect the pump inlet line, remove and clean the strainer, and run the pump until no more water comes out. That seems to do the job, and apparently doesn't damage the pump.
At least, it hasn't yet!
Me too. Disconnect inlet and outlet lines. Position a towel to save mopping up small amount of water (the enemy) that will come out. Run pump until no more gurgling and sputtering. Reconnect lines. Total time: 2 minutes.

RE: Fresh water dump - observation at truck stop

Maybe their last trip before winterizing, or maybe they were dumping bleach/water after sanitizing their water system.
Because of the risk of freezing when we return to Maine after a winter in Florida (yeah, I know, we come home too early), I always start draining my fresh water toward the end of the trip, in NH. I'm sure the long rivulet I make arouses suspicions of passing motorists and toll-collectors, but I've yet to hear a comment.

RE: Best route from Maine to Georgia

Our favorite way of getting from Maine to Georgia and beyond takes a little longer and costs more in toll $$ but we enjoy it and don't have the stress of I-95 travel. Basically, it involves taking the ferry from extreme south Jersey over to Delaware, then down the DelMarVa peninsula to Virginia Beach and then Rts. 13 and 17 the rest of the way. We've taken every imaginable way from Maine to Florida, and that's our favorite; there are some other ways we sometimes take for variety. I-95 is not one of them.

Tire age surprise

I have an '04 Sunline TT, built late in '03. It came from the factory with Maxxis tires, one of which is still in service. Even though that one still looks good, agewise I figured it was due, or maybe over due, to be retired and replaced with new one.
Imagine my surprise today when I checked the date code on that original tire and found that it had been manufactured early in '00, meaning it was nearly four years old when it first hit the road. And that makes it almost 12 now!
I haven't kept track of the miles, but that tire has been from Maine to Florida seven times and around Maine and Canada a lot when not snowbirding.
I don't know what the moral of this story is, but I sure would like to know how this tire went nearly four years from manufacture to in-service.

RE: N. Conway to Bar Harbor

Avoid any route that takes you through Fryeburg (ME) between Oct. 2 and Oct. 9. That is, unless you want to go to the Fryeburg Fair, which is worth doing!

RE: Portland Maine I-95 vs I-295

I go up that way frequently and I don't understand why they route traffic onto 295 instead of keeping it on 95. It's just a few extra miles to stay on 95 and it's an easy route.
295 gives you easy access to "Whole Paycheck" (Whole Foods) and Trader Joe's to stock up on Two Buck Chuck. Two good reasons to ignore my advice to avoid going that way. :B

Portland Maine I-95 vs I-295

Updating my update: I've been through Portland on I-295 very recently and noted some improvement but not enough for me to change my advice to use the Turnpike (I-95). It's still white knuckles and tooth rattling in places, even without anything in tow. Anyone coming up this fall for foliage or whatever would do well to take the Turnpike through Portland.

RE: Sanitizing RV water system

.....In November I plan to sanitize the water system in the usual way with chlorine solution.
• Rather than flushing the chlorine solution from the water system with clean water, I will blow-out the water lines containing the chlorine solution….leaving a small amount of the chlorine solution in the lines which will keep them sanitized. I have to blow-out the lines due to the likelyhood of freezing during the month I'll still be in Delaware.......
That's what I did two years ago before our Maine/Florida snowbird migration, and I cannot see any problem with it with a mild bleach solution (1/4 cup per 15 gallons of water). I must say, though, that our water pump developed a problem shortly after we began using it on that same trip. I still believe it was a coincidence, not related to the bleach, but as a precaution I've gone back to flushing right after sanitizing.
