RE: HP Network Communicator

I Googled and found THIS. The 2nd paragraph down seems to have a cure.

RE: afternoon at the park

Very true that you can not fix stupid, nor can you teach common sense. That's what separates people from each other.

RE: 10-corporations-control-almost-everything-you-buy

Not to mention the scope and power that goes along with some of these Mega's. G.E. is a company Link that most connect with stoves, refrigerators and many other appliances, but has very far reaching power to effect how things work. The average American is not interested in how all this opens up as long as they're life is not seriously impacted. It can also have strength in films, news and other Media operations. Other things can not be discussed on this forum due to it's posting regulations.

RE: HDMI vs Component

In our stick house we have Time Warner Cable and tried the HDMI, but they're particular cable receiver doesn't always play well with it, so I went the Component Cables with excellent results.

RE: 10-corporations-control-almost-everything-you-buy

My dad always claimed that, there is nothing better then a good healthy monopoly. This of course is looking from the business side. From the consumer side it would limit the competition which lowers prices, in some cases.

RE: 10-corporations-control-almost-everything-you-buy

It is actually much worse.. Thanks to mega-merger-mania, fewer and fewer are controlling more and more.. Radio and television for example. At one time there were rules about owning too much of the media in any given market,, but the broadcasters kept pushing and pushing and now there are many markets where every on-air personality, every news anchor and every newspaper reporter get their paycheck from the same paymaster.. This used to be outlawed, and still should be. every news anchor and every newspaper reporter get their paycheck from the same, not to mention the same script to read from. If they are down to 10, how long before it is down to 1 or 2?

RE: Outback Steakhouse - Thumbs Down

The wife took me to Outback for my birthday, cause they had 2 for 1 deal. What do you want for a discount steak anyway. Took the rest home, chopped it up and put it in my mac & cheese. You want GOOD, then put out the money and go to Ruth's Cris and see what good is. I ate at Ruth's in San Francisco years ago, by my self, spent around $40 for diner, desert and wine and it was Heavenly and mind blowing. If you need to resole on your hiking boots then Sizzler or Outback is your best bet.JMO.

RE: Movie flubs

Remember when they showed space ships in "Flash Gordon" films, the engine smoke was usually hovering around the ship instead of hushing out the rear. Remember MASH and all the scenes that were supposed to be outside when they were actually inside on a sound stage. In Bonanza, when a horse rode up the the ranch house you could hear the hoofs on the wooden stage floor. The Pink Cadillac where Clint was having a conversation in a car going down Reno's main street? Every time the camera was on the other person talking the direction that the car was traveling was different.

RE: Your opinion on ugly current model car front ends?

I have said for years that every time an auto manufacturer says "completely redesigned or restyled" they still look the same, buy buyers will say, yes, it is a new style and they buy it. As for what the Grill looks like, once you are seated inside it makes no difference, unless you see another of the same grill design coming toward you. How about a car that has a big "S" on the grill, so when you see one creeping along the highway you can say, "Look at that S-Car-Go.(Snails)

RE: Drivers License Renewal

Here in SC if your over 70 you have to go in in person to proove that your still breathing. Eye test, present license, pay the lady, wait for the guy to finish hid doughnut so he can take your picture and you're finished. OH, sorry, I shouldn't used the word "Finished" around OLD people. Now only good for 5 years instead of 10, just to make sure you don'y over pay in case 10 years is too long. Ha Ha.

RE: Lets talk about keys.

I like the idea of a house and car key hanging around the neck, like dog tags. Have them gold plated so they look decorative.

RE: Tired of Product Videos

I recently went to Youtube in search of video descriptions of vacuum cleaners and how they actually do the job. Some videos are produced by the manufacturers which will not show any short comings. On the other hand, personal experience videos are better, because they show "Real Life" defects. Problem is that too many personal videos are so poorly done that it's a waste of time, not to mention the RAP music which accompanies them and over rides the voice. Either make a Music video or a product video, make up your mind. They need a separate section on Youtube for Moronic stuff.

RE: The English language

Why is it every time you enter a town the sign says 'Speed Zone Ahead' but actually you have to slow down?I love the signs at construction zones that say, "REDUCE SPEED 50 mph". What they mean is "Reduce speed TO 50 mph". If they meant what they wrote, at least on the local construction zone I've been dealing with, our speed should be 20 mph, not 50. The addition of the word "TO" might have required a larger sign OR a higher cost to add 2 letters. :B

RE: Did you ever do something truely stupid to your computer?

All your replies help ease my pain. I will be keeping it and set it aside for a future MOBO and CPU switch out, that is when I have the cash to spend in case I screw up some more. The wife always said that I break the computers so I have something to work on, I guess she's nailed it. You have to learn some how, right?

Did you ever do something truely stupid to your computer?

:o:R:S:M All these emoticons and more explain how truly stupid I am. Take one nice computer (Specs listed in signature at bottom),open it up, as I have done numerous times to others, in order to clean out cat hair and dust bunnies. Barely a year old, it died a premature death. Seeing that the fans were thoroughly coated I started with the CPU fan. To do a better job, while not thinking of the consequences, I unlatched the CPU fan, which is connected to the heat sink, and pulled it out with a little resistance. OH NO NO NO. The heat sink is STUCK to the CPU CHIP with thermal paste (hardened) and ripped it right out of the chip holder that has a thousand one pins....little TINY pins, all in nice neat rows, or at least they USED TO BE NEAT. Tried to put the whole setup back in and bent many of the tiny pins. After visiting Youtube for ideas, which of course I should have done first just to be sure, I saw that there is a release lever that that when lifted will release the pins. Straightening the pins and reinserting the chip was a disaster. There is no cure for stupid. Luckily I just "Inherited" a nice laptop, so with the aid of an exterior hard drive enclosure I was able to dismount the hard drive and retrieve all my saved info on the "Murdered" computer. I did have a backup drive, but once again, I was silly and failed to do regular backups. Might not have helped, because if the CPU AND the motherboard were toasted windows wouldn't have recognized the new board and chip. Got to go now and change my signature to "Senility Works".

RE: laptop with no sd card port

just fyi my computer came with no sd card port so its a pia to import pictures I started to search for usb to card adapter and sure enough my old friend "tiger direct" has it for 9.95 just received it it takes all 3 size cards and works perfect, just thought this might help someone else. you can get those just about anywhere but i avoid the middleman and just connect the camera directly to the laptop. I used to just connect camera to computer until I went with windows 7 and there where no drivers to use W7 for my cameras. Did you check on-line for the manufacturers wed site to download drivers for your camera? There are a lot of camera buffs here and maybe they can help you out.
