RE: Crater Lake

I was just at Crater Lake about 2 weeks ago - stayed at Joseph Stewart SP about 30 mi. south - VERY nice CG - would highly recommend it. Road was open as far as Crater Lake Lodge - still about 12-15 feet of snow up there but absolutely gorgeous! ST

RE: TPMS Systems

I have the TST system. Had the original version with non-replaceable batteries in the sensors, but had several sensor problems. Replaced it with the newer, user-replaceable battery version - has been working great for 2 full seasons. Just saved me $$$$ last week - I noted I had a rear tire losing pressure (and increasing tire temp). Hadn't gotten low enough to sound the alarm prior to my seeing it. Sure enough tire had picked up a chunk of steel. Spare on before I had an issue! VERY glad I had a TPMS! ST

RE: Favorite Apps for Android and iPhone

Re: gas buddy - since I use gas I haven't tried to sort the diesel, so can't comment there. But what I did recently discover is when you get a list of stations in an area but some have no price showing, if you click on any of those stations from the list the actual "page" for that station does list the last price reported. I figure using Gas Buddy over the past x/c trip saved enough $ to cover a couple months of my data plan! ST

RE: Favorite Apps for Android and iPhone

Don't forget Gas Buddy! I also got the Google Sky Map - points out the stars and constellations - worked great in Death Valley! For weather alerts I went with OnGuard ($2) - sends me all sorts of alerts based on my GPS location. Sanidump lists dump stations - i went with the free version... Another Net member clued me in to FoxFi - turns my phone into a hotspot without the monthly fee to Verizon! Using it right now! Awesome! ST

RE: Free Severe Weather Alerts via Cell Phone

If you are asking about the OnGuard App - I would presume so, since I get frost advisories, wind warnings, fire danger, etc. - not just "standard" weather - anything that would be put out over a NOAA radio, I guess... ST

RE: Free Severe Weather Alerts via Cell Phone

I got a great little app for my smartphone called OnGuard - think it was $2 - follows me where I travel with alerts based on my physical location. Got it before a x/c trip started a month ago - has worked out great. As compared to the little beep or buzz from weather channel, etc., I have programmed this to sound continuously until I acknowledge it. I can vouch that it will wake me up in the middle of the night - since it has! Hope this helps! ST

RE: Arctic Circle Tour?

In '08 we flew to Ft. Yukon with Warbelow's. Great evening tour - included bus tour around the village. Check out http://www.warbelows.com/summer_tours.htm - and joe b. knows the bus driver! ST

Guess the other question is - what do you need in a campground? Hookups? Dry? Pet? Can steer you better with that info! ST

RE: Looking for camping around Ahseville, NC.

Hi - take a look at Taps RV park - we stayed there last October - found it fine for our needs - very close to Asheville - we visited Biltmore - had room for 40-footers in addition to our little 'B'! Reasonably priced - owner was very friendly and accomodating. We'd go back. ST

RE: Ham radio in my Roadtrek - rig and installation suggestions

To keep it easy I run my tri-band HT in the van - have a gutter-mount (yes, my '02 Chevy actually has gutters!) dual-band antenna over the passenger door. Connects to the HT with a BNC. Cable routing was pretty easy - the rubber molding on the Chevy next to the windshield covers a nice little channel, then coax in by the hinge and accessible on the floor by the doghouse. Add one 12v adapter and I'm in service! I carry a wire J-pole to string up in a campsite if I want to play. So far in 50k miles I've had but 2 Hams give me a call even tho I have my callsign on the back of the rig... Check with Alan - he has a dual-band in his Sprinter that has a detachable faceplate - he can give you some more details. ST

RE: Where to go RVing in Kentucky???

There is a Corps of Engineers park just North of the caves - Nolin Lake, IIRC - try http://www.lrl.usace.army.mil/nrl/ - only catch is - to get to the caves the most direct route involves a small ferry ride across the river - NOT doable with a big rig - so check the map 1st! ST

RE: Carlsbad Caverns - Have you been there?

We visited in the fall of 2010 - no reservation for any tour - were there mid-week - like others just rode the elevator and strolled around underground! We stayed at Brantley Lake SP, about 10 miles north of the town of Carlsbad (http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/PRD/ParksPages/Brantley.htm). Nice campground. If you go in the afternoon, at sunset you can watch the bats fly out of the cavern - supposed to be amazing - we had planned to stay but got chased away by severe storms. Have a nice visit! ST

RE: Bicycles in Alaska?

Hi - I hauled mine 15k miles there and back in '08. Since we have a 'B' inside storage isn't an option! I did ride it several times - not so much for "fun", but it is our "toad" - so would go to grocery stores, etc once we were parked. Most of the places we camped weren't set up like "Lower 48" CG's, meaning not many loop roads in the CG. Exception being at Denali. '08 was a very wet summer, so we had quite a bit of rain, which limited my interest in pedaling. Bought a gas grill cover which worked very well to cover it on the rear rack. If we were to return I would likely bring it along again. We found we had more interest in visiting places in AK that DIDN'T have paved bike paths! So, it didn't get a lot of use, but I was glad I had it when I wanted it. Have a good trip! ST

RE: Motel?

Hi - for quick 1-nite stopovers we regularly use truck stops/ Walmarts/ CrackerBarrels. Can't see paying to park and sleep! That's why we got our 'B'! And regarding bedbugs, they are very real in ANY level of motel/hotel, not just the "flophouse". I like my own bed!!!! ST

RE: Baffled in App-Land...!

Hi All! THANK YOU for the suggestions! I've been at it for about a week - gotta admit I'm pretty impressed by what I can do with a "phone"!!! So far I figured out how to place a call AND hang up! Yup - that was an accomplishment!!! Gas Buddy is already saving me $, as is the tethering! Managed to take a picture, and figure out how to get it back! Simple things...! I am sure I will have more questions as I go along. Thanks! ST

RE: Baffled in App-Land...!

You guys rock! Had to have a friend show me how to SEARCH for apps (so THAT'S what the magnifying glass means! :) )- found the Antenna helper, Flying J, FoxFi, Task Manager, Compass, etc! You are right - that phone (Motorola Droid Razr) is truly a computer that happens to make phonecalls, too. First trial trip for it coming up in a couple weeks - will see how MY learning curve has progressed! ST

Baffled in App-Land...!

So I took the plunge and upgraded from flip phone to smart phone... Folks have told me about all these cool apps that I "just HAVE to have..." So, I went looking at the Verizon sites App Store (yea, free ones, too!). Since I'm new to this game, how do I know which of the multitude are really worth it, and how do I find the ones I don't see listed? Phone is on an Android platform. There seems to be many that accomplish the same task - so I figure there must be benefits of certain ones over the others. So far I've added Walmart, Weather Channel, and Gas Buddy (I'm a slow starter). So, what are your recommendations for:
a Flashlight
a Barcode scanner
an App-killer (?) to turn off those not needed?
making the phone a GPS (so I can read coordinates where I'm at - it has a GPS for Navigation on it, but it doesn't give or show actual Coordinates)
Getting hazardous weather alerts, or will the Weather Channel one do that?
Laptop tethering App vs paying Verizon $20/mo???
I presume I just go to the Pilot/Flying J site to find their App...
Where do I find TV Antenna Helper??? Just a Google search?
Got any other suggestions?
Took me 2 days to figure out how to answer the thing...! This will be a project! No 12-year olds around to help me out except the dog, and he doesn't have thumbs :)
Thanks, as always! ST
