RE: Sudbury to Wawa

I think there are still some misunderstandings about the route here.
I'm on my 3rd version of Streets and Trips - so I'm assuming the route you are talking about is the same one that has been mapped out on every one of my Streets and Trips maps when I seek directions for a travel route between Sudbury and Thunder Bay - without punching in any other waypoints in between.
Streets and Trips will take you out of Sudbury on 35 to 144 then up 144 to an intersection across from Hwy 560 and labelled on Streets and Trips as the "Sultan Industrial Road". The indicated route then takes you on that road to Sultan then on to 129 and finally to 101 and on to Wawa.
This is the "shortcut" that myself and some others have been talking about - and it is the route that Streets and Trips will pick every time.
I apologize for being persistent in clarifying an understanding of the route here - maybe I'm the one that is a little confused - but the "Sultan Industrial Road" that I have known in the past is not one I would ever consider taking our trailer down.
There - I'm done .....
Thanks,
Jay
Definitely, do not take the Sultan road. That is a dirt road!

RE: Sudbury to Wawa

144 to 101 is not a dirt road. However, 144 is narrow and curvy. Shoulders (f you need them to change a tire, for example,)especially near Sudbury end are almost non-existent. I don't like meeting up with transports on this road -- as I said, it's narrow! It is shorter to get to Timmins this way from Sudbury but I have gone by 17 up to 11 to get there just as a change from 144.
17 is much more scenic.

RE: Baby Boomers - Are you a Snowbird for 2011-2012 Season?

Not a full time Snowbird (ie. 6 months) but we started last winter by going away for 2 weeks and this winter for 6 weeks. Slowly getting there. Next winter, I have plans to go to Texas -- don't know how long yet.

RE: Best CG in Algonquin Provincial Park

Hi all,
I have lived in Ontario most of my life but have never visited Algonquin. With the new HTT we want to plan a nice length of trip there come spring or summer 2012. My kids (9&11)and I are very excited to explore it. There are a lot of different parks in it and i'm not sure where to start. Can anyone give any advice on which campgrounds might be best to visit? Any pictures of nice sites would be great!
Thanks,
Steve

RE: Retiree US Visa's proposed

Just heard on the Canadian news that 2 US senators are bring forth a bill to create a new US visa for Canadian Snowbirds and Chinese visitors. This new visa would be for 240 days and renewable every 3 years and you would have to be 55 years old and retired. Interesting development. I am not sure what the chances are of a bill such as this being passed and how the process works in your senate. In our system, unless a bill is sponsored by the governing party in power, bills have very little chance of passing. It will be interesting to see the debate on this one and what hooks it will have.
:S Silly me! I thought it had to do with the credit card!! But I do agree with michelb -- be careful what you wish for.

RE: planning a trip to California

I live in N Calif and I can certainly tell you that Jan-March are hazardous weather conditions no matter where you drive. The roads are slippery due to rain and sand blowing from windy days. Most Hwy passes over the Sierras are closed due to snow except I80 and Hwy50 (Reno, Tahoe: respectively). There are also snow conditions over the Grapevine on I5/Hwy99 so it could be slow going due to trucks crossing over.
I know all this because I have grown children living in So Calif that we visit every Christmas.
Your best bet would be to use hotels or motels. Gas is around $3.50 gal so towing will hurt your pocketbook more than motel stops.
You can choose to use truck stops for overnights along the routes but truckers usually are a bunch of sobs due to winter driving conditions and they like to take it out on the little guys (us RVers), so beware.
Whatever you decide, don't forget blankets, water, pocket heaters and other essentials. Calif temps can/do get down to freezing during those months.
Have fun and stay safe!
Thank you as well. I definitely won't forget to bring the essentials!

RE: planning a trip to California

We are leaning more towards staying at hotels along the way. Maybe we will be more organized about it next year and try the trailer.
As you drive the trip since you plan to repeat it next year mentally have the trailer attached and mentally see the pluses and minuses of having the trailer with you.
If your friends have room for you to stay in the house with comfort you may find not towing may be the fastest and cheapest way to travel even before you consider the hassle/safety factor.
Good ideas! I like that.

RE: planning a trip to California

LPM we just came off an 8K mile MH trip so to trailer or not can be a tough call. We went through MO to get to WY to do Yellowstone and when to the Grand Canyon by way of CA. :)
In MO after mid March you can travel wet without issues. WM's are an option but after leaving TX they may be harder to find in NM, AZ and CA.
We did not tow and did stay in motels some after a couple weeks. The MH was nice to have but at 8 MPG more or less it was not cheap.
Like in Williams AZ the camp ground was $50 and very nice hotel (Days Inn) was $79 or $89. It was me and two 14 year olds so the hotel won the vote that night. :B
It is hard to save money towing the trailer and there will be some places like Sky Walk that will cause trailer damage if you tow there due to gravel road condition.
Many people we talked with were doing it by car/suv just fine.
Personally for two I would leave the trailer HOME. Out west it is easy to take side trips that are super but could leave your trailer at a camp ground a long ways from where you want to sleep that night.
Do have your rooms booked or plan to stop by 5 PM to fine one in many places. Cities have discounts on the weekend. Tourist areas charge more on weekends.
You should have a nice trip either way,
Gale, thank you for the info and your perspective. We are toying with the idea. We have done a search of hotels so we know what we can get. We're just holding off on booking them at the moment -- we just want to compare cost right now as well. My concerns is leaving from here and finding places to overnight as most campgrounds are closed.

RE: planning a trip to California

There are campgrounds/rv parks on your route. There are, of course, wal-marts in pretty much all decent size towns The choice is yours, whatever you are comfortable with.
We do not do the walmart overnighters. DW prefers rv parks (KOA and private parks).
We travel approx 250 miles or 5 hrs per day. Leave late get in early so we can check the area after setup.
Many here do the walmart lots.
What area of California are you planning on visiting (coast/beaches/ Yosemite & Kings Canyon/ redwoods / wine country / Death Valley & deserts?
We are planning on Northern California around the San Francisco area. I have a cousin who also lives close to Stockton.

By places along the way to stop, I was wondering about campgrounds (especially in the Northern states like Michigan).

planning a trip to California

Hubby and I are planning a trip to California mid February to end of March. We are in Ontario, Canada (northern). Today we started wondering about taking the trailer rather than staying at hotels along the route we have decided to take. On our first day, we are planning on stopping in Grand Rapids (this with the car) but if we were to take the trailer, are there places to stop along the way. We are planning on passing through Springfield, Missouri, Amarillo Texas and up to the Grand Canyon and then make our way to California? Do we stop at Walmarts or what? We know we can dewinterize when we get further south so until then it does render the trailer a bit useless. Any help would be appreciated.

RE: HOW MANY MORE TRIPS THIS SEASON?

The long weekend coming up (Canadian Thanksgiving). Although it's cold today, I am hoping that the weather forecast holds out and we have great weather for the weekend. If it continues, we just might do one more trip! After that, we winterize and wait (unless we decide to sell the trailer next spring-- it has been in the back of our minds).

RE: well insulated motorhomes.

Check out this site www.4scf.com. There are a bunch of people on this site who winter camp (mostly in Ontario)and there are tips as to how to prepare your camper whether it be a motorhome or trailer for winter camping.
Good luck with finding a motorhome you want.

Trees are also changing colour because they are stressed out this year. Everything has been quite dry. I wonder if there will be good colour this year.

There is lots of interesting wildlife in Algonquin Park.
You'll have to hang out there for a bit and get some pics to share.
& I hear tell some fall temps are happening in Ontario, the way inland has fall come so much sooner than in Atlantic Canada.
:C
:h Where are the fall temps? Still warm here.

RE: How do you minimize the Cdn. to U.S. $ service charges?

I bank with RBC in Canada and was able to open a chequing Account with RBC US. No transaction or monthly service charges if $700? minimum balance is maintained. They give you a "Check Card" - really a Cdn debit card equiv - that uses the VISA network in US. Can be used as a debit or Visa card with automatic withdrawal. Really no need for a separate VISA card for me. Can also transfer funds on line from Cdn acct to US acct with standard conversion fee. RBC US has branches in NC, AL and FL but few or none elsewhere. I get cash back with debit transactions anywhere in US.
RBC just sold the US sub and the transaction closes in the fall. You might want to see / follow up with RBC if this sort of arrangement would meet you needs and is still available. Any bank service without service charges is great in my book!!!
Bob
We have the same thing. And according to RBC, I believe, there isn't going to be much change with PNC taking over. However, we are going to be watching this development with bated breath as we are planning on going to California for 6 weeks starting the middle of February.

RE: Have not used the TT all year! Ever been through that?

In the three years we have owned our TT, this year is the year we have used it the least. We have only been out three times thus far. Home renovations and the price of gas and camping this year have tempered our desire to get out as much. In fact, with the price of gas, we were almost thinking of selling the trailer but for the time being have decided that short camping trips might be in order.

RE: Unfriendly campground - Camping La Rochelle

In 2007, hubby and I were planning on camping at Gordon's Park on Manitoulin Island. We were planning 4 days. Unfortunately, things came up and we were not able to make it. They took 2 days of our reservation as a non-refundable deposit. I thought that was excessive. I could see 1 night but 2 was a bit much. Have never gone back there and have no desire to do so.
