RE: are the redbuds out yet?

Come on down! We got your redbuds, we got your daffodils, we got cherry and pear and tiny little buds of dogwood breaking through. Better hurry though, this is the earliest spring I have seen in 13 years here and I suspect we will get a freeze or a snow before April is over. It is hard to resist the urge to run out and plant something! lizzie

RE: Best lake to retire on

Check out the TVA lakes in NC,TN,& No GA. I live on Lake Apalachia. Lake(s) Hiwassee, Chatuge, Nottley, Blue Ridge, Santilla, Fontana, Nantahala and others are near by. It was lovely on the lake today and this evening we heard loons. They are migrating and we probably won't hear them again until fall. Not a big deal for those of you in the north, but pretty exciting for us. lizzie

RE: TT steps

Wow! I had an encounter with our TT steps on Monday night and look like I'v been in a fight. It happened in Alabama too, Do I see a trend here? Mine was pure carelessness, went out to get the dog bowl in my flip-flops. You have my sympathy. lizzie

RE: Need condo in St. Augustine for April & May

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been on-line all day and as an RV'er have sticker shock at the price of condo's. I have rented a house on the St. John's River several times in the past but that is just too far from my granddaughter's school. I contacted all the rental websites mentioned and also found a good one that has listings directly from owners. Haven't check with KOA yet but it would be a good location for us.

Need condo in St. Augustine for April & May

I need to spend April and May in the St. Augustine area so that my granddaughter can graduated from St. Augustine High School the first of June.My TT is just too small for the two of us for that period of time. A small furnished condo would be perfect. We don't need vacation amenities, just a good place to hang out till graduation. Any help will be appreciated. lizzie

RE: Crossroads Sunset Trail 14' trailer advice

We have a 2008 Crossroads Sunset Trail 22' TT and are very happy with it. We are no longer under warrenty and like "maskins", the only problems we have had were our own fault. I believe that the interior finish work, cabinets, etc. are superior to other units in this price range. I also like the abundance and placement of electrical outlets and other details that it make it more comfortable. We are fortunate to be able to camp in the winter so we spend a lot of time in it. lizzie

RE: Parking 5th wheel on your own empty lot?

Yes. We have a winter site for our TT about 300 miles south of our home. It has full hookups on a gravel pad in the middle of 10 acres. This land has been in my family since 1889 and has some deeded variances dating from 1900 that have allowed me choices in how I wanted to set it up. If I had to buy the land and get permits for an RV, there is absolutely no way that it could have worked. That said, we have enjoyed it very much. We leave the TT there from November until April as we do all of our winter camping below the gnat line. We spend a few days at the site, hook up and tour awhile, then return it and go back to NC. Hope it works out for you. lizzie

RE: Route to Chatanooga

Follow narodog's advice. 76 does not actually connect with 64. At Hiwassee you would need to go north to Hayesville to connect. The Blairsville (US 129) route is quicker. The Ocoee Gorge is beautiful but slow. No problem towing. lizzie

RE: Canoe attachment

PKEASE do not use foam blocks. The are not safe for too many reasons to go into here. Your present racks may be strong enough to support one canoe, with appropriate placement, padding, and tie-downs but you need to check the owner's manual and/or your Ford dealer. The best bet is racks made by a reputable manufacturer such as Thule or Yakima. You can call their company and talk with a representative about your needs and the specific design of your vehicle. Canoes/kayaks should be tied to the vehicle back and front as well as secured to the racks with cross ties. Bungee cords should never be used for tie-downs. These racks may seem expensive but terrible accidents occur from failure to secure your load. Folks are going to tell you they have been using foam blocks (or maybe an old rug) for years but I am telling you they have just been lucky so far. lizzie

RE: Tornado damage at Tellico Plains KOA ?

Thank you LindaAnn. I thought we would run over there this afternoon, but we are still cleaning up here. No structural damage, just washed out roads and part of our driveway slid into the garage! Everything is beaten down by the hail. We sold our Class B two weeks ago and our TT is in south Alabama so we did not have anything valuable out in the open. We are counting our blessings and praying for those less fortunate. lizzie

We are ok out here. I am concerned about Murphy. Thank you for your kind thoughts, it was a scary night. lizzie

Tornado damage at Tellico Plains KOA ?

We are under attack here in eastern TN and western NC with tornados coming in waves. I heard that the KOA in nearby Tellico Plains, TN was severely damaged but no confirmation yet. We had two inches of ice on our exposed decks from the intense hail storm that came through about 7:30. We were in the utility room in the basement but it sounded like a war zone (we have a tin roof). Another storm came through later and was furious but fast. I have not been able to contact anyone in Murphy but I suspect the power is out. Gotta run back to the closet. lizzie

RE: I had to do it, I had to Block a members posts.

Yes. There is a double standard. Those who restrain themselves (thanks Jim)and have considerations for other posters, stay on the forum. Folks like Rodger who have earned our respect, get respect. It's just like Real Life. lizzie

Wow Rodger! Considering all you put up with as a Mod that was a big step. Took me five whole minutes to find a likely suspect. lizzie

RE: Best Canned Cream of Mushroom Soup?

I like the Imagine Natural soups and broths sold in boxes(similiar to milk cartons) at Whole Foods. Their Creamy Porobella Mushroom is especially good. They are pricy for 32 oz of soup but I use them in receipes for cooking chicken and I also add pureed mushrooms and cream to make more soup. lizzie

RE: Small cabin near Boone, NC

Go on-line and google Valle Cruces Conference Center in Valle Cruces, NC. They have some lovely little cottages called The Hermitages between Banner Elk and Boone. Valle Cruces is the home of the Mast General Store and is a lovely unspoiled area. lizzie

2012 Milepost has arrived

UPS just dropped off my 2012 Milepost: Alaskan Travel Planner. The Church book (Traveler's Guide to Alaskan Camping) came on Friday. Time to get down to some serious planning. Still not sure about the Ferry as we hate to oommit to specific dates, especially coming back. Next project...new TT tires. lizzie

RE: Haines, Juneau,Sitka, Petersburg, Wrangell, Ketchikan CGs

Are you taking the Ferry going to or coming back? I sold the Roadtrek last week so have a little more in the travel budget. We are now looking at the Ferry one way also. What do the experts recommend? Ferry up (mid-June), or Ferry back (late August)? lizzie

RE: Canceled my Caravan trip, Going on my own!

I cannot imagine the cost of the liability insurance that these caravan companies must pay, especially if they are for-profit organizations. I operated a recreational activities company (hiking/canoeing) in Florida in the 1980's and the cost of insurance plus the anxiety of looking after paying customers was too much for me. I still lead trips, but only for non-profits where I can be covered as a volunteer and not paid. i think the caravans probably earn their money, but they are not for me just yet. lizzie
