Following Forum advice -Do you do it?

It is winter and I got so bored I started re-reading my own posts. Was surprised at how often I actually followed the advice I asked for. Most recently I: 1)subscribed to Verizon MiFi, 2)put in a septic system for the TT site instead of sinking a 55 gal drum 3)decided Not to buy a generator for our trip to Alaska (thanks JoeB), and 4)learned to post photos on the Forum (thanks Francesca). Still agonizing over what brand of tires for the TT and still working on the itinerary for next summer. What about you? How much consideration do you give to advice from Forum members (solicited and unsolicited)? lizzie

RE: Bikes On Front Of Truck/If You Do, How Do You Like?

We had a front receiver on our previous truck and my husband liked to carry the bikes there. I did not like it! I found them to be very distracting, especially if I was driving.

RE: What Did You Do To Your Class B Today ?

goreds2: We drove it out of the mountains to a level spot and all the while I was feeling sad. I really need to find a new home for it though, we have a TT and are not using the B. lizzie

RE: Camping Too Much Trouble?.......How Sad

Good points Vulcaneer, about the effort vs. the time spent and about the cost of towing vs. a cabin. Both are very valid. We are going earlier and staying longer to make the trip worthwhile. This may not be an option for them. lizzie

RE: Camping Too Much Trouble?.......How Sad

Chuggs: I love your attitude. That's just the way I feel when we are going camping. I even felt that way when we had five kids and camped in tents. Like so many others have said, you either love it or you don't. In regard to storing away from home, for the first time ever we cannot bring our camper home. In the summer we park it about 7 miles away, this winter it is almost 300 miles away. We have a set of rubbermaid bins and two coolers that we put in back of the truck. Each bin & cooler holds the same things every trip. We have been down to south Alabama four times since we left the TT there and I find I have far less running back and forth to load it than if it were in the yard. I load the bins in the house, my husband puts them in the truck, we are good to go. I do feel sorry for folks who make a big investment in something that they do not enjoy though, lizzie

RE: I-40 WB closed at NC/TN line (1 lane now open!)

I live in NC, but three miles from the TN line. We can choose roads in either state for our routine business. For us it's TDOT everytime. They prepare roads before snow is expected and stay on the plowing, remove rocks and trees as promptly as possible and send out crews in all kinds of conditions. NC waits to see if it really does snow, hopes that the locals remove trees before they get there, and ignore telephone calls. lizzie

RE: St. Louis to Vogel SP GA

Following Bamaman's direction, if you take US 64 from Cleveland through the Ocoee Gorge you will intersect with TN-68 at Ducktown TN. Turn right and continue through Copper Hill TN and McCaysville,GA on what is now GA 5. Continue to US 76 near Morganton, GA and turn left to go to Blairsville. You can also continue on US 64 almost to Murphy NC and turn right on US. 129 to Blairsville. I can't think of any reason that one route is better than the other. They both offer 4-lane roads going from west to east, but are two lane southbound. US 129 has more passing lanes. Hope your have a wonderful stay. lizzie

Not sure about "and etc." but Nantahala Outdoor Center (near Bryson City) will take you anywhere you want to go kayaking or rafting. lizzie

RE: Salmon

Would you believe in the pressure cooker? Take 1/2 inch thick Salmon steaks, pat dry with paper towel. Brush with lemon, juice, butter, or whatever & sprinkle with dill. Put about a cup of water in the cooker. Place the Salmon on the rack inside the cooker. Bring up to steam and let it rock for no more than 3 minutes. Cool cooker at once. I usually serve it with a light sauce over pasta. It also makes a great chilled pasta salad. This meal can be on the table in 10 minutes.

RE: Relative light weight trailer recomendations.

We went from a Class B to a 22' (box length) Crossroads Sunset Trail Super Lite and have been very happy with it. We did not want a dinette and we did want a comfortable couch. We have a small slide that moves the couch back but we can reach everything when it is in. Like others, we prefer the smaller adjustable table(s) and they store behind the couch. I'll admit I wasn't crazy about the TT at first but now I enjoy it. lizzie

Cranked it up and while it was running I dusted the interior. Getting it ready for a potential buyer to see tomorrow.

RE: Camping Too Much Trouble?.......How Sad

You know, I think they really do want to go. They have gone everytime in the past when they could get cabins. I think they may be a little afraid of pulling their unit. They bought it big so their grandchildren could travel with them. GK's are now in their teens and not so interested. It is also stored about 20 miles from their house and I think the organizational task is overwhelming to them. We left our TT in south Alabama for the winter but we can load the "tupper totes" and be on the road in two hours. Maybe we should start an RV organizer service, we could call it Not Too Much Trouble. lizzie

Camping Too Much Trouble?.......How Sad

Our group of paddler/hikers will be going to Florida in March for an annual outing. We are staying at a SP that has a campground and cabins. One of the couples in our group has a 32' Fifth-wheel, but have decided not to go since the cabins are all booked. They say camping is "just too much trouble". During the discussion, two other couples joined in saying they had RV's in the past but agreed that getting them packed and ready, towing them to a destination, etc. "wasn't worth it". What isit with these people? They are active adults, not couch potatoes. Why did they buy an RV in the first place? This Rant has been brought to you courtesy of lizzie.

RE: Canyon de Chelley

We have camped at Cottonwood Campground twice in the past five years. It never occured to us to worry about being safe. I don't recall any showers in the restrooms though. Canyon de Chelley is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. I would plan for at least two days so that you can get a guide to go inside the canyon. Three days would be best. I envy you! lizzie

RE: Little Guy camper- can I hang out here?

You can hang out anywhere. I hang out on whatever forum interests me. Sometimes I get snapped at but most everybody is nice and super patient. Ask lots of questions, it's winter and everybody has cabin fever so you will get lots of answers. lizzie

RE: internet connection

I would not recommend HughesNet unless you have no alternative. We have it at our home because we do not have any cell or wireless coverage and our telephone service is so poor that dial-up is out of the question. We have had it for four years and are on our second satellite dish and "upgrade". It is expensive to be so slow and inefficient. lizzie

RE: Generator questions?

Thanks again to everyone. Your input totally changed my mind about getting a generator. When I carefully considered the cost of a top-of-the-line unit with the camping costs for a few nights of a/c hookups, it was a no brainer! The reminder that you can't run them all night anyway was spot on! We never had a gnerator until we got the Roadtrek and it was built in. My DH reminded me that we never ran the a/c (via generator) in it all night either. Now I have to find another expensive toy to covet. lizzie
