RE: Furniture Protectors

I made slipcovers out of heavy denim. They were a bit of a trick to make but not impossible. I really like the result. I had them on our house furniture for YEARS (14 or 15) and we had cats during that time, as well as dogs. The furniture underneath looked brand new (not that that was the aim!). They were of course washable. So of course I made a set for the camper!

RE: Dog tie out cables

we also forgo the ties/cables and use ex-pens. No more tangles! And more relaxed dogs.

RE: I am a failure

He sure is cute. There are some animals that we make an immediate connection with - it's as if they were meant to be.

RE: Honorary Kiwi - at least for a week

Very cool! You must be proud as punch! I hope they get a chance to practice and get to know one another.

RE: Why do dogs bury bones??

I have to lock Spike (min poodle) in his crate when he's eating bones and other tasty treats. Or... he'll hide them in the house. One time followed him when he had a raw pigs ear (gross beyond words) only to find him hiding it behind the pillows on the bed in the spare bedroom! Now wouldn't that have been a nice surprise for a sleepy guest :-o

RE: Traveling With a Bird?

we camp with an African Grey Congo. Grace is a great traveller and loves to camp. She doesn't scream, her loudest noise is a musical whistle, but mostly she is quiet.

RE: Potsie's Groom

Nice job! He's adorable. I like how you've left his body long. I tried doing that with mine but his hair is just too darn thick to get the comb through. His expression is exactly like my miniature when he thinks he might be in trouble! How can I be mad when I just want to kiss him instead... poodles might be smarter than we think ;-)

RE: What I really do

I know how to make a small fortune breeding horses... start with a large one! (been there done that although the fortune was never large!). I suspect it is the same thing with any type of animal.

RE: Securing Dishes

I also use non-skid liner and have had no problems... except... for the plates in the plate rack that stand on their edges. They can roll back and forth if the road is rough and have knocked the cupboard door open. Corelle dishes crash into a million tiny pieces! To solve that I just bungie the doors shut and voila no problem.

RE: Pet Business - Venting

Even allowing your own dogs to do their business in your site is rude. I clean up after a lot of dogs, my own and irresponsible owners, and can tell you you seldom clean up 100% of their mess, and the urine, well you clean up nothing. Now the next camper group comes in with a couple of two year olds who play in the grass and chew on their toys that have been dragged all around the site. Sounds delicious, doesn't it? Please take your pets to the designated pet areas, if there are some available. If not, walk them to areas where young children do not play, like the side of the roads away from the sites etc. We take our dogs to off campsite areas. We have often been stopped by nearby campers thanking us for our consideration. No one wants to put down their cooler, or set down their baby where some dog has peed or pood! Its what we as dog owners can do to ease relations with non dog people. BTW - dogs can easily be trained to "do their business" on command and not whenever they feel like it. What do you think service dogs do!

RE: Dogs and bridges.

Years ago I has a Basenji mix that would duck for bridges and overpasses. She hated the car and never got her anxiety.

RE: dining room table in FW

The table in our 5er is not attached. I often move the table around. I suppose if we were in an accident the table might go flying, but then again so will the sofa and various other stuff... I might feel differently if I were in a "a" or "c".

RE: Pet owners beware!!!

I believe (and may well be mistaken) that freezing the salmon for a certain length of time kills the flukes and renders the salmon safe for raw eating. At least that's what they say on some of the RAW feeding lists I'm on.

RE: Problem with one neighbor cat

I think the tick populations are much more dependent on large mammals (deer, foxes, raccoons, etc) than small ones like rodents but I'd love to hear from an entomologist. I hope you are right - it's just one thing I read yesterday when I was reading about ticks. We have ticks on our property but rarely (if ever) deer. Perhaps raccoons though. I was distressed to read that mice are also a vector for Lyme. Cause for sure we have lots of mice on our property. thanks for your input.

RE: Problem with one neighbor cat

I don't know whether or not it's true, but I just read something about Lyme disease and ticks that wondered if the increase in tick/lyme populations was due to the decrease of free-roaming cats keeping down the mice populations. Things are often not as cut and dried as we'd like to believe. FWIW my own cats were indoor only cats and I don't believe in letting cats roam.

RE: Hanging Picture Frames

I've used 3M hooks that ripped the wallpaper off the wall. I still use them for some things, but generally I just use a really small nail or in some cases, screws. The nail hole is easily patched and becomes invisible. Some sticky things like velcro can never be removed, so you (and the next person who owns the trailer) had better be happy with where the velcro is. Oh, and I use a bit of earthquake putty in the corner of frames to stablize them on their nails. It is nice to personalize though :-)

RE: Where does your dog or cat like to "hang out" on the road

Our three ride in the back seat of the truck - the 2 poodles (min & std) are tourists and like to look out the window. the ridgeback though lies down and goes to sleep the minute the key is in the ignition. Riding in crates would be safer but not practical. Besides, the tall front seats of the truck will keep them in the back in most cases (I hope).

RE: Potty Question

We sometimes use park facilities if we are going to be somewhere for more than 5 or 6 nights to save tank space and having to go dump in the middle of the camp. We almost never have full hookups.

RE: Does Anyone RV with Parrots?

We travel with an African grey Congo. Grace loves camping and is a very good traveller. At the campsite she entertains with her whistles and talking. She is never loud - well... her whistles can travel a distance but everyone seems to enjoy as I often hear people whistling back (and she's not as loud as the native birds!). She does NOT scream or squawk. She makes less noise than most people's radios - in fact you usually can't hear her if you aren't right on our site. She does however, take up A LOT of room! One little carrier for the truck, a big cage for outside (or inside with bad weather), and another medium cage in the camper. We keep buying bigger campers to make more room for her! The dogs take up hardly any space compared to her.
