RE: Generator shuts down when driving only

try to keep track 1 does it quit turning left or right 2 does it quit uphill or down hill 3 does it stop after a bump 4 does it stop on acceleration or during braking unplug the remote harness a pinched wire can cause shutdowns untill you hit another bump or walk around in the rv enough to rock it and unpinch it. connect a switch to the fuel pump so you can run it without running the genset. install a tee with a valve between the fuel pump and carb. install a gauge in the valve and run it and check pressure it should be less than 4psi pressure over 4 psi will allow it to overide the float and flood the genset. run the drive engine. on most fuel injected engines it builds up a certain amount of pressure which may increase fuel pressure to the genset. this pressure is what allows the car to turn on the check engine light when you leave the gas cap off or loose. older carb fuel systems may build a neg pressure in the tank. a genset fuel pump is only set to lift fuel 3 feet so any vacuum in the tank may cause it to stop pumping. try leaving the fuel cap loose. remove the gauge and run it till it stops. point the valve in a can and trigger the fuel pump switch. does fuel come out. if not there may be a vapor lock problem and the fuel line may need to be rerouted or insulated. if fuel comes out ok but it won't run check for spark. if it looses spark it could be a oil level sensor but they should reset as soon as the genset is level and allow imediate restart. if spark comes back after the genset sits it may be overheating. a 12volt radiator connected to run when the engine runs to draw air across the genset may help

RE: generator won't start

your genset uses a controller that closes a relay to engage the starter. the wire comes from the controller wire J1-12 and sends B+ to relay K2 terminal 85 this trips the relay and allows it to send higher amp power to the starter. There should be a ground all the time at relay terminal 86 A constant B+ should be at K2 relay terminal 30 and when the relay closes it sends power out terminal 87 to the starter. http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d38/kg5388/hdhca.jpg open the side access and you will see the control plug coming out of the air box to the middle/left side of the access opening. look all the way to the far back corner of the black front section and you should see the relays. they are a small black square about 1 inch square and can be bought at an auto parts store they are used with adding off road lights to trucks and cars

RE: generator won't start

FIRST LET'S START WITH THE MODEL NUMBER!!!!!!!!!!!! there are several designs of the QD gensets. a few have inverters and some have a control board and some use a relay between the control or inverter and the starter and some have a fuse for the starter where the radiator/fill cap is so lets start with the complete model number please

RE: Onan 5000 generator shuts off after 5 min

didn't give the model number. when it stops check for spark or remove the fuel line from the carb and put in a bucket and crank it to see if fuel comes out. be careful with sparks and gas older style the coil sits on the back side of the genset where the motor and genset comes together they get old and will cause this problem when it stops put a spare spark plug in the wire (*** do not remove the spark plug from a hot engine EVER***) and hold it against the block and try to crank it and see if you have spark if no spark get a cheap test light the kind that looks like a ice pick with a cord and clip sticking out the back or a 12vdc light like a trailer clearance light and some wire. now reach in and put the clip or one of the wires on the pos terminal on the coil.then hold the point or other wire against a unpainted place on the engine or genserator. try to start the genset the light should come on. this proves the control is providing power. if the light does not come on then you need to check the control now move over to the neg post of the coil. try to start the genset and the light should flash. if it flashes that proves the points or electronic ign is working and you need a new coil. if it lights steady then the points or electronic ign has a problem. if it doesn't light at all but did light on the pos side the coil is bad. if it passes both of the tests it lights steady on pos side and flashes on the neg side but still no spark then the coil is bad.

RE: Onan 5000 Emerald Plus won't start

model number would be a good start may be a neg battery cable problem either at the frame at the battery or at the genset
