RE: Slide out problem

How many slide out mechanisms are on your slide out?? I understand that some of the manufacturers only used one. On my AF they have two, and they seem to be very beefy. Of course AF has all "full wall" slide outs, so they are larger and heavier then alot of the others.

RE: vent screens

I bought the set from Camco for the furnace vents since they are round. The 3 frig vents and the water heater vent I made myself and covered with a heavier aluminum screen that I already had. We never had a problem with the pests in the past but I figured why take the chance.

RE: did the anti sway bar make the difference?

A few on here have reported little or no difference in their ride after adding a rear sway bar. For me, I would not leave home without mine. I could never understand how a good sway bar could not make a nice difference with stability. Glad to hear you are seeing good results.

RE: Good or Bad DIY? let me have it.

Sorry but the wood idea just doesnt do it for me. I would rather see you shim somehow using steel. The right idea but the wrong material.

RE: LEAF PACK UPGRADE OR SUMMO SPRINGS

I went with the "SuperSprings" add-on self-adjusting leaf springs this time around. I've been very happy with them. They stabilize the camper side-to-side as well as fully inflated airbags and I never have to mess with them.
Same here, installation was easy and noticed a sway reduction too.
X2 I love my Supersprings. Can't understand why more folks dont try them.

RE: Fastgun Trouble

I bought mine in early 2010. I just checked and the nuts on the threaded rods are definitely different than the one that you are showing in the photo. Its more like a tapered nut and very shiny compared to the rod. No galling so far, but I did just lubricate. Thanks for the post.

RE: Arctic Fox Dome In Cabover

Before I would do that, I would cut a new hole for a standard Fantastic Fan. Worse part would be getting a 12 volt wire over to the new fan. Possible you could feed a wire outside across the roof and secure it with eternabond.

RE: Towing boat with my Chev / AF 1150

I was doing the same thing as you are until I smartened up (thanks to Boatycall) and replaced the GM factory hitch with a Reese Titan Class V hitch ( about $300 if I recall). Installation was easy. Everything is included that you need. I was using the 41" Resse hitch extension, so its now a matched combination. Even at 48" the extension is rated at 400 lbs, and at 41" setting its rated for 500 lbs. toungue weight. The Titan hitch is very well built and much better than the factory hitch. I use stabilizing chains on my extension, and the Reese hitch has holes at both corners for easy use to attach the chain hooks into.

RE: Dumb Question . . . Stableloads

I installed the quick disconnect stable loads on my 06 Chevy. I like them. The only thing I use my airbags for now is to make it easier to engage/disengage the stable loads.
Do your quick disconnect stable loads engage without weight? or is there a bit of space between them without the camper on? Mine seem to engage without any weight in the truck...
Thanks
How can they engage if you have them pulled out? The old style had issues being engaged all the time since they were a permanent installation with no adjustment possible. This should not be a problem with the new style. Sounds like you might have the old style.

RE: Dumb Question . . . Stableloads

I have a 2011 Dodge with a 2012 chassis; it has the lower overload. I used the "Quick Disconnect" Stable Loads; they work ok. What I noticed is that when I had the TC on and had the OEM wheels and tires, the SL's actually worked. When I changed the wheels and tires over to the new 19.5" Visions and tires, it closed the gap and now I barely have enough room for one SL wedge, the SL's are always engaged. Now I find that I really don't need to use them. I guess the larger wheels/tires changed the sementry of the suspension and closed the gap of the overload.
Exactly the reason why Torklift went from the old style lower spring stable loads (A300) to the new adjustable style. If your stable loads are always engaged, you tend to get a bone jarring ride when unloaded. Ask me how I know. I actually had to replace tail light bulbs that could not take the abuse.

RE: Dumb Question . . . Stableloads

The ones that engage and disengage (adjustable), work off the lower overload springs. They are the ones used by GM truck owners, and maybe now some of the other brands of trucks. The larger rubber bumper style work off the upper overloads on Ford and Dodge only. There is an "application" chart on Torklifts website that will show you which style will work on your truck (www.torklift.com).

RE: scisor's steps

Must be that we think differently. We'd never buy a TC that has scissor steps as we have seen so many people fall using them over the years. Several have collapsed when being used also. I actually transported one 52 year old lady to a hospital with her husband along when she fell off their scissor steps. Like I said, there are different thoughts among TC owners and we have owned at least one TC unit constantly since the mid 1960's. Had 8 different ones to date.
That said, if we had ever purchased a TC with scissor steps, I would add a bumper immediately so a normal TC swing up bumper step setup could be had. If an add on bumper was not available, I'd make my own or have one made. They simply bolt on so it's no big deal!
A bumper step eliminates all the worries associated with scissor steps and they are always ready for instant safer usage.
Just our thoughts on the subject...
Did you ever use the factory bumpers steps that come with an AF TC? They are usable but they leave alot to be desired. When not towing we use our added Torklift glow steps and we love them.

Homemade insect screens for frig and water heater

I had some aluminum radiator screen (from Lowes) lying around from another project that I did. After checking out that water heater and frig insect screens would cost me about $50, I decided to just make my own. The screening is alot heavier than standard screen so it bends and forms very well. It holds its shape nicely. Since its radiator screening, its painted with heat resistance paint so it should be able to hold up to heat coming from the water heater exhaust. On the frig vent I secured the screens with plastic cable ties. On the water heater vent I fastened with 4 small bolts/nuts due to any heat. I already had factory screens on my furnace vents so that area was already protected.

RE: Adventurer Warranty Problems (What to do?)

Those of us that own 1st and 2nd generation Eagle Caps haven't had good customer service from Adventure RV either. The owner of Adventure RV bought Eagle Cap from his brother a little over a year ago (maybe two), moved the manufacturing plant to Yakima and has not been very accommodating to the previous Eagle Cap owners.
The new Eagle Cap customer service is not even close to the previous company out of La Grande, OR. The old company would bend over backwards to help you and would do repairs at their factory. The new company, well you are on your own. As much as I like the quality of Eagle Cap I personally wouldn't buy one while Adventure RV owns them!
Thats good to know...thanks. Customer service is where it is at. When I researched buying a TC, I paid attention to what current owners had to say. Thats one of the reasons I went with AF. So far, so good with their customer service.

RE: Puncture precautions - what do you do?

Get yourself a tire plug kit. It may just save you from having to pull the flat and fighting with the spare. On our last outing in the hills of Arizona I punctured the left front tire on the truck. I was able to plug it with two tire plugs and use my portable compressor to fill back up with air. The next day we stopped at a tire store in the first town we came to and they pulled the tire and patched it properly.
Just remember, a plug is not intended to be a regular permanent fix. But they work great in emergency situations. In my case it saved me alot of work and headaches.

Were they both connected to cables in some way or was one just sitting there unused? In order to get full benefit they have to be connected together.

RE: So long AF811 Hello AF 1140

We went with the 1140 for the larger 8 cu ft frig and the extra storage, both inside and out. I dont know what I would do without the large outside slide out storage bin. The 1140's stove exhaust fan wasn't an issue for us since we can adequately vent out by using the ceiling fans if we have to. Our previous MH had the same type of exhaust fan so I guess we were used to it. We gained our wardrobe closet space by ordering the optional full wall bedroom wardrobe. Again, tons of storage just to add to what the 1140 already has.
