RE: San Francisco Bay Area Bridge Tolls Going Up

Heading up that way tonight to Santa Rosa. I'll go up 280 to 19th and over the Golden Gate and then head home over the Richmond San Rafael Bridge though the East Bay on Sunday - no tolls and good roads all the way! Well almost - Oakland is still under construction last time through!

RE: Shasta Lake RV Park/Resort with a 36' trailer

We stayed at Holiday Harbor Resort years ago. It is on the lakeshore but with lake levels low its a walk down the the water.
You can find info at: Holiday Harbor
We rented a patio boat from there and had a great day on the lake...
Its a nice area!

RE: Is there any better Ocean View than Pismo coast RV?

Costanoa Campground is now a KOA - Santa Cruz north I think. It is on the San Mateo Coast and you have an ocean view from some sites and full hook ups. Not much up there but ocean, sand and wind. Very relaxing!
In Half Moon Bay there is Pelican Point RV park. Never stayed there but friends have and liked it.

RE: new to camping

My kids grew up camping and liked to have "special" foods for camping. We make pasta with big meat balls, potatoes over the campfire in foil packs. Foil is your best friend camping!
I got a hot iron sandwich maker that you put in in the fire to make toasted cheese sandwiches and camp pies. I use canned pie filling with sandwich bread, you can get the pie iron from Cabellas.
We BBQ most dinners so pack a Weber charcoal grill in the camper.
We do store items in our pantry, pancake mix, coffee, trader joe prepackaged items like soaps and noodles for quick food between meals. I assume you have kids :)
The most important thing is to have fun!

RE: Looking for good Campground in CA

the KOAs in Santa Cruz county are tent and RV friendly. Both are dog friendly too. The one in North co is cheaper but more remote... there is a store and horse stable. The Santa Cruz Monterey KOA has lots of stuff for kids and a club house and heated pool.
only about 1 hour from the bay area and they usually have openings.

RE: LA to SF, best stops/boondocking/camp sites?

Sunset State Beach west of Watsonville in Santa Cruz County is a great campground - we are heading there in a couple weeks. You should be able to score a spot midweek without reservations...
As the name states - great sunsets on a deserted beach.

RE: Family camping campgrounds

When we want to stay at a park other than a SP/NP or NF we usually go to a KOA, our kids really like just having a pool to play in since that is something we don't have at home. Our local KOA is a great weekend or birthday party spot since it has all the Kamping extras they offer - pool, hot tub, bouce pillow, arcade, playground - we stay there once or twice a year just for the kids. Its more pricey but around here they are usually the only resort choice when you have kids.

RE: Class C Mods

Here are some pictures of the Bench Modification:
pad up and ready to open
We left a 5 inch lip in the back for the bottom pad to sit on when you opened up the hatch. Still have to take out the back pad, but much easier.
hatch open and very accessable
We put a strap on the hatch to make it easier to lift.
bottom pad removed for better view
You can see the lip left for the bottom pad to sit on so we would not have to take out the seatbelts each time. We did both sides and it took about an hour at the most. We had the hinges already.
no cost for lots more storage!

RE: 14 deaths in Yosemite Park this year so far

The last article I read about the deaths at Yosemite, it was people doing things they should not have been doing. When you mess with the bull, you get the horns.
-Michael
Not always. A Physician Assistant and a Medical Doctor died a few weeks ago after the PA was washed off a bridge by high water. The article didn't go into exact detail of how he was washed off, but the Doctor died trying to save his friend.
On the three that went over the waterfall, all three were doing something they weren't supposed to be doing, but only one slipped and fell into the water. The other two died trying to save her.
But the two trying to save her were also over the rail/rope....

RE: Class C Mods

Sounds like a good idea! May use it for the cab over for the kids - make one for each!
We recently (last weekend) finally made the dinette bench seat storage more accessible. We cut the top plywood board right at the seatbelt inserts all the way across, then put hinges on the cut to create a door into the lower storage. Now we can just take out the back pad and flip up the bottom pad against the backrest to access. So much easier!

RE: Camp food

A good, easy potato recipe for fire or BBQ:
Put down big sheet of foil on table - have sliced onions, garlic powder, salt, pepper and olive oil ready on hand.
Slice entire russet into 1/4 inch slices, inbetween each slice slip a slice of onion, salt, pepper and garlic to taste. Drizzle with olive oil and wrap up tight. Wrap with another layer of foil. put next to coals in fire or on grill for about 30 to 40 minutes.
Unwrap and serve.... leftovers are good for morning reheated with scrambled eggs and bacon. You can use butter also - even yummier but not as good for your arteries!
We call them Cascade Potatoes - invented in the northern Sierra

Sacramento overnite

Hi,
We are traveling to Tahoe in August and want to stay over in Sac and see some sights with the kids. Would like an RV park off the highway with a pool. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

RE: Favorite California Spots - 19 ft trailer

Another vote for the State and National Forest Parks.
We camped at Red Rock State Park above Mojave in April last year - perfect weather.
All the State Beaches are great, hard to get into with a 6 mo reservation but worth the trouble.
The northern Sierras have some great lakes to visit in the Lakes Basin area. Sardine Lake and Salmon Creek CG are our favorites.
Have fun and enjoy the scenery!

RE: Our "stinky" neighbors @ Natural Tunnel SP, VA

We have a baby skunk wandering out neighborhood this summer. Our puppy really wants to play with it but not an option! :W
A couple years ago we were at Sunset State Beach and there was an entire family of skunks living under the hosts deck. He kept calling the ranger but they only caught a couple. One baby came over to our site and fell asleep under a bush for a few hours. Cute but didnt go near it.
