RE: Unhook pos or neg when storing car?

You dont say how old your battery is or if it is a maintnenace free or not. Those may have significant impact on your results. I store my truck every winter as well from Nov to April and disconnect both negative leads and leave it alone. I have never had an issue with the truck not starting in the spring and I have been doing it for 8 years now. I do have 3 year old batteries but didn't have any issue with the old ones either. Suspect you may be down on water or the batteries are not charged enough to hold the charge that long.

RE: Water level in batteries

In response to your other question, the batteries are not used but they are required when on shore power. The converter will provide most 12v power but some things like the fridge require the battery to actually function properly. Not sure why, but some have commented here that the fridge does not work unless the battery is hooked up. My trailer has a battery disconnect switch that I turn off when on shore power to keep the converter from constantly charging and boiling the batteries. If you are on shore power most of the time and do not have one, you might want to consider installing a disconnect switch.

RE: Need urgent help -charging batteries during winter storage

They are AGM Group 27 batteries in parallel.AGM's have a LOT less self discharge than flooded batteries. Apples to oranges.
Correct, but the original poster did not specify what type of bateries he had in the trailer. My truck batteries are flooded cells and I do not have a problem with those over the winter. It is only the trailer batteries that are AGM.

RE: Need urgent help -charging batteries during winter storage

I store my truck and trailer each winter from Nov to May. I fill the truck fuel tank with diesel and add some stabilizer and algeacide and disconnect the negative leads from both batteries. I cover the truck and leave it sit over the winter in an unheated barn. Trailer batteries get charged and I disconnect both positive and negative leades from the batteries and they sit in the front of the trailer all winter as well. I do not charge the batteries at all during the winter. When spring comes, I hook up the negative leads to the batteries in the truck and it starts right up. I pull the trailer home and charge up the trailer batteries and am good to go. Have been doing this for 7 years now. I got 8 years out of the original batteries on the truck. Trailer batteries were new in 2005 and have not had any issues with them yet. They are AGM Group 27 batteries in parallel.

RE: Air Compressor

I carry my Porter-Cable pancake compressor. I usually have it pressured up (my tires only require 80 PSI). In the event I need more air, I would just fire up my Yamaha Generator, and plug the compressor in.
I carry one of these as well. Great compressor and not really heavy.

RE: Will a Honda or Yamaha 2000 Run Home Fridge

I have two EU2000's and I have a system set up with suicide plugs to allow me to run my freezer, two refrigerators, furnace, on-demand gas water heater, gas range, gas fireplace with fan and a few lights and it works fine. Not sure I would run it on eco throttle but I ran the setup for 12 hours this way and worked fine.

RE: Ultimate tow vehicle

Are you running E rated tires or D. I found that going to E rated on my truck helped the stability. I also have a chip and exhaust mods as well as a bigger intake. Makes the power of the truck fine for pulling the trailer and the stability is fine. I run a TPMS as well to warn me if the tires are having issues.

RE: A little hint on backing your fiver.....

Sounds like a good tip. Use the power mirrors when backing in on the blind side and you will be able to see a bit better. You can adjust it with your left hand while steering with your right and you can move it out enough to see the back of the trailer.

RE: Going 8 nights without power. Will this work?

I am taking my 5th wheel boondocking for 14 nights next week. I am taking a 2000 watt honda Eu and my battery charger. I run the genny for about 3-4 hours every 3 days to top up the battery and am fine. I have done this the past 3 summers without a problem. The fans will suck a lot of power so I would limit their use. Turn them on for a bit when you get back to the trailer to take the heat out and then turn them off.

RE: Ever use a "Pump Out" service?

You could always hold the toilet valve open while it was being pumped out. Also, aren't the black tanks vented through the roof? Would that prevent the suction from building up in the tank.

RE: Getting ready to go boondocking

I boondock for two weeks every summer and I have a pair of Trojan 12V deep cycle AGM batteries. I carry a Honda EU2000 generator and a battery charger. I charge every couple or 3 days. The generator can charge the batteries in about 4-6 hours on the econo throttle setting and I stick the genny back in the woods and run an extension cord. Cant even hear it at our site or any of the neighbors site. If it is raining and I want to watch TV, I plug the trailer into the genny and watch a movie. I would rather deal with a small genny than worrying about keeping a huge bank of batteries properly maintained. I just find it easier that way. The genny weighs about half of the weight of a single L16.

RE: Ontario licencing requirements

I took the full A course with air brakes endorsement at Adanac Driving school in Scarborough. I told him that I wanted the full A not to drive commercially but to be able to drive a large farm semi or something like that. They got me in a 10 speed and I took some lessons and passed the ministry road test.

RE: Firestone Ride Rite Air Springs for E450

I had mine installed with the on-board compressor for 1100.00. It did take a good 6-7 hours as all the hoses have to be run into the cab for the control panel. I like the on-board compressor so that when I drive to where my trailer is and hook up, I dont have to air them up manually. I can adjust the bags after I hook up to tow level. Driving empty with full bags creates a harsh ride for the truck and passengers.

RE: Polishers/Buffers

I use the same products on my RV and have the Porter Cable. Does a good job but if the craftman is still working for you, then I do not see the point of buying a new one. (unless you want another tool, then I support you wholeheartedly as one can never have too many tools)

RE: Issue with furnace coming on by it self

I had the same problem but my furnace was coming on even when the A/C setting was selected. It turned out that there was a screw or nail through one of the wires that was causing an intermittent short. The dealer had to re-wire the A/C and Furnace to get the issue to go away.

RE: Run Generator Out Of Gasoline To Keep Carb From Gumming Up?

The issue I have had with draining carb bowls is that the rubber seat that seals off the flow of fuel when the bowl is full dries up and rots. I have done this on motorcycles and in the spring when the gas is turned on again, the seat will not stop the flow of gas into the bowl. I have since kept all my equipment filled up completely and use gas stabilizer and make sure I have fresh fuel in it before storage. One other thing especially with metal tanks is that this practice prevents condensation and rust from forming on the inside of the tank during storage.
