RE: Considering a 2nd roof air

I talked to my dealer yesterday for pricing for the 2nd AC. In stock and ready to go. Quoted an installed price less than Camping World wanted for the AC unit alone. As soon as I can get the battery charged up I'm taking the Big Horn in to have it installed. Thanks again for your replies and experiences. Joe

RE: Bear Country

Banff National Park in Alberta. Fully hard-sided RV stays in one part of the CG. Fold downs, end slides of canvas, tents, anything made of fabric of any kind parks in a part of the CG inside of a high electric fence to keep the bears out. Seems to work really well for them, but they also have the same common sense rules as Yellowstone, etc. Nice place, too. Bear reports along any of the roadways and a ranger or park policeman is sent to the bears location to keep park visitors away. And they don't mince words telling folks to stay in their cars and keep moving along. We only saw black bears there. Joe

RE: 08 ford 6.4 dang it, should I?

My '08 6.4 has been running great now for over 65,000 miles, including a trip to Alaska towing a 14,000 pound 5er....... until recently. It started blowing huge clouds of smoke from the exhaust. Bluish grey smoke, not the typical black diesel exhaust one might see. This happened after going through a regen on the DPF which cost me a 1/4 tank of fuel before the ECM display on the dash said the regen was complete and I could shut down the engine. Dealer said the ECM had to be reflashed. They did so and no more smoke..... until day before yesterday. No warranty issues as all of my service has been by the dealer and I took Ford to heart and haven't played with aftermarket tunes. This is an intermittent issue it seems. Anyway, not to hijack the thread, I would inspect the maintenance records closely and have a really good diesel tech go over the drivetrain with the finest of toothed combs.. Joe

RE: Locating Asphalt Millings?

We got a couple semi loads ~3 summers ago from the township road commissioner when he was doing a job in the neighborhood for free. Yeah, the pieces were larger than desired but free is free. Joe

RE: Going to Rodchester NY

+1 on the finger lakes wineries. There is also a 200+ year old Inn and restaurant in the town of West Bloomfield on US20 a few miles west of Canandaigua. The name escapes me at the moment but I am sure one of the other members can refresh my memory. The food and service was fabulous. Joe

RE: Bear Country

There is one very distinct difference between black bears and grizzlies..... If the bear is climbing the tree to eat you, it's a black bear. If the bear is knocking the tree down to eat you, it's a grizzly. ;-} Joe

RE: Considering a 2nd roof air

You folks are telling me what I've been whispering to myself now for some 4 years now. The wife approves but not the expense. The stick and mortar has undergone some significant repairs after a minor flood last summer. As she is retiring as of Thursday I guess I'll have to give the dealer a shout and get the ball rolling on a new a.c. The budget, well we'll just have to deal with it and GET 'ER DONE!! Thanks for the positive feedback and for the Tent thing too. Joe

RE: Bear Country

Yellowstone has very strict rules on outside kitchen prep/cooking/cleaning areas. Anywhere there is a bear sighting will usually have a ranger or two in the immediate vicinity keeping the public at bay. There are mixed reviews on the bear spray which is 10% oleoresin capsacin, (hot pepper), spray. I've seen the same concentration not work on someone resisting arrest. It doesn't always work on humans and I don't think it works as well as advertised on bears. I carry a .45 Long Colt Ruger Single action in a fanny pack when in bear country loaded with heavy hard cast loads. Some may not have the luxury of carrying a firearm as I do and there are surely others opposed to such. So be it but I and my wife will not become a bear turd in the back country when on a hike. Never surprise a bear and if you see a sow with cubs, or just the cubs, turn around and walk away as the sow will destroy anything she deems a threat to her cubs. That said.... go and enjoy. Absolutely fabulous scenery and worth the trip. Joe

RE: Upgrading my 5th wheel. Could sure use some help.

We bought our Bighorn July 2007 and it had major league birthing problems. No need to get into it all again but if it weren't for a cooperative dealer we'd have gotten rid of it a long time ago. The floor plan suits us and it comfortable to live in with huge amounts of storage. The last BH we looked at was a left over 2010 3670 or 3610, can't remember exactly. It was a POS and would have needed major work just for us to take it for a test drive. Really, what QC guy or gal would let a unit off the floor with a door that wouldn't close and latch? And that was just one of the dozen or so major internal build issues we saw. I don't know if our unit was a build miss and dealer fixed or if the 2010 was just a build miss but my advice is to look very, very closely at the details of any unit you are considering and don't let any minor detail go unnoticed or corrected before you sign off on the deal. Montana and Heartland are under the Thor umbrella and our dealer has said Thor can't get the high-end build to high-end standards. We have no experience with Montana, but whatever route you choose to go, look really, really close before you buy and don't take delivery until everything is to your satisfaction. My $0.02 and I'm sticking to it. Joe

RE: Considering a 2nd roof air

The tent in the vent modification looks pretty slick. I may try that as it sure as heck can't cost very much. The tools to cut the pipe would likely cost more than the material. It does seem most of you prefer the 2nd a.c. We do tend to vacation where it gets rather warm. Camp Perry Ohio in August is typically 90+ with really high humidity. It was 104 F. in Montana in late August, early September on our way home from Alaska back in 2010. The main a.c. just can''t deal with those conditions and my wife suffers way more than I do. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. Joe

Considering a 2nd roof air

Considering the addition of a 13,500 btu roof air conditioner to our 2008 Bighorn. For those of you who currently have the 2nd a/c, how often is it put to use and has the cost-to-benefit been worthwhile? We've been in a number of places and situations where we've really wished we had the 2nd unit. We have 50 amp so that isn't an issue with the coach. The DW is retiring early, Thursday is her last day, so upgrading the coach is more likely as getting the new coach we recently looked at can't happen. All thoughts and comments appreciated. Joe

RE: Open new campground

I talked to the manager of a new campground in Michigan a couple summers ago. Full hook at all sites, 50 amp at all sights. Nice big & flat sites with concrete pads. Fairly large, multi-level club house with a snack bar. Small marina also. 16 million dollar investment.

RE: Generators

With a pair of Honda 2000i's hooked up we can run anything except a 2nd roof air, which we don't have anyway. They worked really well for us on our Alaska trip in 2010. We use a heavy duty cable lock system run through the wheels for theft protection. They also transport well in the basement of our fiver.

RE: Need to replace our grill.

I have the Coleman Road Trip grill. It is an absolute pain in use. It is even a bigger pain to clean. Instructions say to put a half inch or so of water in the bottom of the grill. Always seem to get ugly looks from fellow campers when we dump the greasy water out of the bottom. Take a pass on this one. I'd get rid of mine if it hadn't been a birthday gift from the DW.
