RE: Interesting Tire Decision, Opinions Welcome

Maxxis is the only ST I would and do use, after scrapping the oem specials.
Of course, if you're a "real" gambler, stay with the china bombs.
If $200 is a budget-buster, you're in the wrong recreational sport.

RE: First Tw Chevy 2500HD Gas

Easiest way to get a little better gas mileage is to slow down. Remember, you're towing a house down the road - houses tend NOT to be very aerodynamic.

RE: Fiat to Offer Lifestyle Truck

All it needs is a few mods, blower, supercharger, tuner, air bags, etc to tow any 5vr owner desires. He'll just have to remember the ST tires on 5vr are only rated to 65 mph.

RE: Need new tires - what about new rims?

If you have not previously upgraded the tires to next level, this would be a good reason (and/or excuse) to upgrade rims to handle the higher tire rating/psi.
Don't forget the s/s valve stems.

I'd say you found your "sweet spot" - 55 mph.

RE: to chip or not to chip DURAMAX engine?

Are you still using the ST tires which are rated for 65 mph MAX?
I found towing my 5vr, slowing down to 58-60, increase my mpg, and I don't have to stress about "smokie". Go be them all the time at that speed and just wave, some wave back.

RE: How to change a tire?

I cheated and had the tire dealer order/balance and install (along with s/s valve stems.

Tires are an obvious upgrade.
As long and they didn't move around TOO much inside, shouldn't be a problem!

RE: Any ideas to improve gas mileage

Slowing down and driving with the wind on your back. Head winds will drop your mpg even lower.
I used to get great gas mileage with a Pinto hauling a tent. Now I get about 9.2 mpg with a Chev 2500HD, with the 8.1 hauling a 9200-lb loaded 5th wheel. But, I would never want to go back. Many, many more creature comforts in the trailer than tent.

RE: Total noob question regarding tow capacity

If you have "ST" tires on your trailer, they are only rated 65 mph MAX at max psi.

RE: Leaf Springs too small for axle rating

Mine were under-rated also. Upgraded the springs to match the axles. This after the shackles were all replaced with thicker steel on, (due to one broken and several stretched).

RE: Rear Stabilizer

I'm sure you realize that anything hanging below the rear bumper (or lowest part of frame) will only diminish the distance to the ground and put additional upward stress on the 5vr's frame.
Best, but far more $$$ would be to raise the frame a few inches at the axles.

RE: preformance Chips

Best, cheapest way to get better fuel mileage is to slow down.
That's what I do with my gas guzzling 8.1 big block Chev (2005). I consistently get 9.0 o 9.3 mpg at 58-60 mph. Besides, ST tires are only rated to 65-mph - never a blow out - yet.

RE: Tires ..... I know ... I know .. lol

Best to go with LT tires if they will fit. But you will have to get new rims to match the LT psi limit.
At the very least you should upgrade tires/rims at least one grade - to handle to overweight situation.

RE: Gas Detector Life

There should be a date listed on the back of the detector. IIRC, expiration is 5 yrs.
If date is still within expiration, try knew batteries, unless it is hardwired, then just get a new detector and play it safe.

RE: Trip of A Lifetime

You'll need at least a year. Hope you have enough time.
In 2007 we did 94-day, 12-000-mi loop of US. No where near enough time. Longest stops were two 5-day stop visiting friends and family. About 1/3 of the trip was 3-day stops.
Most of time we felt "rushed". DW got homesick for grandkids about the time we hit NC and thought about turning around. I told her so could call them daily and we were too far into the trip to turn back - BEFORE THE LOBSTA IN MAINE! No way.
I spend over a yr planning the trip - but there is just too much to see and things to do. The surprises along the way were half the fun.

RE: How many miles a day ?

That's one reason for us driving 5 hrs/250 miles (more or less) daily. DW is not a fan of early mornings, so....and we prefer to set up by 4 PM or so. Gives us enough time to check out the local area - all hopefully, without stress.
You have a healthy amount of humor. Do not lose it. Makes the whole trip much more enjoyable. At least you didn't have the problem Robin had in RV the movie.
