RE: extend frame instead of hitch?

Sure, that type of hitch was as strong as the other bumper hitches of the day, but not anywhere near as strong as the true Class Vs of Today.

RE: extend frame instead of hitch?

Took some digging, but I finally found a picture of the sliding bumper hitch assembly from off of an early 70s Chevy Camper Special Pickup. It doesn't appear to have a hitch other than the bumper.

RE: Slide out problem

My slideout are supported by the inside walls of the camper. That's where I'd add your reinforcement.

RE: extend frame instead of hitch?

You'd add a tremendous amount of weight at exactly the wrong place to make it stronger. That also reduces your ability pull a trailer or haul a camper. I think you should reinforce the hitch ballmount and receiver if anything. You could create your own version of a Superhitch, for example.

RE: Good or Bad DIY? let me have it.

Sorry that I'm late to the party but for some reason rv.net didn't like my largish response, so I've cut it down. The good, tie down plate, and rear tie down. The bad...moving the camper back when you are already off COG is not a good idea (lb on sb). Keep that in mind for the front wood that you've added. The extension is a bad idea. If it held appreciable weight it would overload the hitch, but I don't think it does. Use bump stop extensions if you don't want to affect the unload ride.

RE: Fastgun Trouble

FWIW, I have 6 year old SS fastguns with no issues. Glad to know that Torq Lift stands by their products once again! ;)

RE: first trip

I'd go checkin to a local rv park for practice. You'll learn a lot about what you don't have and what you don't need. Once you are on the road, it's too late to get rid of stuff and a lot of trouble to add even simple things.

RE: Pop TC Rotten Roof and an amateurs repair.

Sounds like a nice project. Sorry, I have no idea how the mechanism works.

RE: Time Lapse of TC Removal From Truck

Yes, cool video. Good as a reminder for why I have electric jacks. :)

RE: should I use bumper mounted tie downs?

I'm not sure why you would use front mounted frame mounts and bumper mounted rear mounts. I think you should go one way or the other, so in this case, add the rear frame mounts. Obviously, both types of mounts work for at least a few people.

Early Chalet Triple Slides ... did they hold up?

I was doing a search on an unrelated topic and found a very long thread that happened when someone mentioned that Chalet came out with a triple slide in a TCM article. That was November of '09. So, for those of you who got one of those models by Chalet by early '10, how'd it work out for you with the new slide type in a triple slide model? There were quite a few of us that were skeptical, but I'm hoping we were wrong. In any case, I'm curious.

RE: 10 years on the Truck Camper Forum

I used to have truck camper site sticker a few years ago, but it wasn't worth keeping after that site went down hill.:R

RE: Replacing the truck due to cell phones

Glad you made it. FWIW, I've been rearended and know others who have been rearended at high speed even before there were cell phones! I'd take my time and look at a few different ones and do the same for searches. You might be surprised what you find for a good deal.

RE: Best truck to haul a triple slide Eagle Cap 1165?

I think a 550 would handle it as well, or one of the giant Chevy's. A 350 DRW with 19.5s probably could work.

RE: Converting Standard RV Toilet to Cassette Style

But, all he has to carry is a bucket to have the same effect as the casette. Oh, and out West as in Washington, we have dumps along most highways, as well as most State Parks and RV parks. I can easily make it a week on my holding tank, but maybe his is much smaller. In that case, use a bucket to have the same effect.

RE: Converting Standard RV Toilet to Cassette Style

I'm not sure how a casette toilet helps if you can't dump. It seems finding one place to dump the black tank would be easier than finding a place to dump a casette on multiple days.
