RE: Google Talk phone number

Thanks Eric... (see that you are a fellow Tarheel...Kinston,NC) If I understand correctly... and I'm not sure I do ..:B Let's say I'm sitting home and the home phone rings... .. the call MAY be coming from/through the Google Voice number.... that has been forwarded to my home phone ... BUT..... because Google Voice will not work without a land line phone installed in my home..... the call could be from someone calling my regular land line number... and I would not know which it was until I actually answer the phone.. to sum it up... ** I still must have a land line phone in my home even if I get and use Google Voice.. ** I can not tell if the call is coming from Google or someone dialing my regular home number direct.. Is this correct... or am I still not understanding.. John

RE: Google Talk phone number

Thanks for the response 1492... from the info given here on this thread, it appears that a Google number can be easily found by anyone doing a simple search for it.. My current land line number is "non-published" in the phone book ... BUT... I don't have it "un-listed" Which means that all anyone has to do is ask for directory assistance or go online and ...pooof... there it is for all the world to see.. So the only alternative I can see will be to change my home number and have it "un-listed" and "un-published" so no one can get it.. and that cost a couple of dollars more each month, but I guess that's the cost of having my privacy.. once again, thanks to all for the info given me... John

RE: Google Talk phone number

Thanks folks... you've pretty much answered my questions.. and I think I will pass on the Google Voice.. If the phone number cannot be hidden completely from a search then I won't be gaining anything over what I currently have with the ATT land line.. Thanks again for all your help... John

RE: Google Talk phone number

Thanks folks... I was mixed up.. I am interested in the Google "Voice" and not the "Talk" that I said... glad you guys caught that.. I tried to get a "new" number but keep getting "there are no available numbers in your area code" ... However, it seems that I can use my cell number and sign up.. BUT... I'm not sure I want to give out my cell number... My whole purpose of getting the Google Voice is to have a new number that no one knows.. I'm getting "unwanted" calls on my home land line .. and I wanted to drop the land line and go with Google and my Tracfone only... **If I do get Google Voice... can the number be set up like the phone company can do with their "non-published" / "non-listed" options.. I want to set it up so it cannot be found by people ... like people searching for me on the internet for example.. I would like the Google Voice number to be 100% private and known only by Google, God and Me.. .. :B **Is that possible to do with Google Voice. ?? Ventrman says I can "block" an unwanted incoming number... **but what if I don't know what the incoming number is ... how do I block it.. **is there a way it can be blocked if the incoming number is not shown or known ? **If later on I decide to cancel Google Voice, is that possible ?.. **and will it effect my cell phone in any way.. ? Thanks again for everyone's help and information... if anyone else has any more thoughts or ideas about Google Voice... please jump in and tell me about it.. I want to be absolutely sure this is what I need before committing to it.. Thanks again, John

Google Talk phone number

Thinking about getting "Google Talk" ... the info says it's like a land line but when someone calls me the call is sent to several different numbers at same time.. house phone, cell phone, office phone...etc.. Does anyone have this system and can give me specifics about it...like... ** must the computer be "ON-line" all the time... or just turned on but "OFF-Line" ? I have DSL.. which is essentially always "ON-line" even if the computer is turned off or disconnected completely. ** Can the computer be turned completely off and not connected to anything ? for example..if I'm out in the boonies and someone calls me on the Google number, will the call still come to my cell phone if the computer is completely turned off and disconnected ? ** is Google Talk a "Voice Over Protocol" or something entirely different ? ** Does it cost money to make/receive calls since it is "Internet Related".. Any information from anyone with "Actual Expereince" using this Google Talk would really be appreciated.. Thanks, John

RE: What is the strangest thing

One of my favorite camping memories is of my honeymoon and our first trip to Wall, South Dakota and the world famous Wall Drug Store.. The thing we saw that day was very strange... That first year we rode our new Goldwnig motorcycle and used a 6' x 10' piece of blue tarp for a tent. We stopped that afternoon at Wall Drug and decided to stay the night because we were soaked to the skin from riding in the rain all day. It was drizzling rain and muggy hot so we stretched out under the tarp to rest in the late afternoon about supper time.. We were just lying there talking ... when suddenly my wife sits up with a wild look on her face and points toward some bushes several yards away. I didn't see anything, so I asked her what was wrong.. She say that there was a very small deer jumping about in the bushes.. She thought it may be hurt and I should go check it out.. I am not a hero, so I picked up a stout piece of firewood and walked over to the bushes.. SUDDENLY a small animal with horns jumped out right at my feet !!.. scared the bee-jeeeeze out of me.. Panicking, without thinking, I swung that piece of firewood at the thing and knocked it flying... it landed on the grass near the tarp where we had been laying... The wife lets out a blood curdling scream and almost tears the tarp down trying to get away.. Needless to say, I was also shook up. But I walked over to see what that thing was and could not believe my eyes,,, it was an animal that looked like a cross between a rabbit's body and a mule deer's antlers.. Yes sir,, that was the weirdest thing I have ever seem.. I felt bad about killing it, but since it was dead anyway, I picked it up and carried it into town to a local taxidermist and had it stuffed.. The folks at the Wall Drug said they were very rare and offered to buy it from me.. You bet !! for a hundred dollars, I let them keep it.. The next year we again took our annual bike trip and stopped in at Wall Drug, South Dakota.. We could not believe our eyes... that strange animal that I called a "Jackalope" was so popular with the tourist that the Wall Drug Store had started making life like copies of my Jackalope and were selling them to folks.. Talking about a missed opportunity ... If I had only known, I could have done that and would be a millionaire today.. When I asked about the real jackalopes in the wild, I was told that they were an endangered species and had been put on the protected list so they could not be hunted.. That is why today, you can only find plastic look a likes of the Jackalope.. The most popular tourist stop in America is WALL DRUG SOUTH DAKOTA ... right on interstate 90.. y'all stop by and say howdy,,, yuh hear, John

RE: AVG VP service

AVG is a great anti-virus program and today is rated in the top three anti-virus programs ... MSE, AVG, AVAST are the top three.. and it is FREE as you say.. However...... AVG does have a very large "Footprint" on your hard drive compared to some other anti-virus programs.. I used AVG for many years and it worked fantastic.. never had a problem... But when Microsoft came out with "MS Security Essentials" I read everything I could find about the program and decided to drop AVG and try MS Security Essentials.. Best thing I ever did to protect my systems... "MSE" is great and it also is totally FREE to download and use.. and the "Footprint' is much smaller..taking up less space on the hard drive.. MSE updates itself several times a week.. I heartily recommend MSE for your anti-virus protection program... Best wishes whichever you decide on... John

RE: Inexpensive DIY WiFi Booster??

You guys are great! Thank you so much for the quick replies. Keep the ideas flowing. Any way to use my TV antenna for the WiFi? Would it even help? The only way I can see using the TV antenna would be to attach the external WIFI transceiver to it and run the USB extension cord down to the computer.. You can run about 15 to 20 feet of USB cable before you start losing signal strength.. John

RE: Dometic Fridge uses ~45 to 55 AH per day, on Propane

About every 6 months I buy between 6 and 8 pounds of good quality, thick sliced bacon.. I always cook the entire amount right away... usually on a cookie sheet in the oven.. Drain it on wire rack over newspaper to absorb dripping grease. Then I put the cooked bacon in paper towel lined gallon size freezer ziploc bags.. and freeze... Frozen cooked bacon will easily last for a year in the freezer with no loss of flavor or safety. Then for the next 6 months or so, whenever I want bacon, I simply take some out of the freezer and wrap in a paper towel... then "nuke" it for about one minute .. Save the bacon grease in a airtight container and store in fridge.. for flavoring foods like soups, veggies, casseroles, etc... Bacon grease will also last for 6 months if kept refrigerated... This simplifies on several fronts... * I only smell up the RV with bacon smoke twice a year. * I only have to clean up grease splatter inside oven twice a year .. .... and I never have to clean up grease splatter on stove top and wall of kitchen area .. * I have fresh tasting bacon in one minute for whatever I need it for... * sometime my bacon is on sale and I save money.. So don't throw away any bacon just because it has thawed out... and don't try to eat it all in one sitting... Cook it all up and then you can re-freeze it safely... John

RE: The Bane of Sprint's Existence.... GOOD RIDDANCE!

Just last May I canceled my ATT cell phone account after twenty plus years and went with Straight Talk... Straight Talk has the same coverage as ATT, Verizon and the other cell companies and it does not require a contract.. My ATT cell plan gave me... * 200 "anytime" minutes * 1000 night/weekend minutes * free roaming * free long distance anywhere in USA... But... NO texting ...and... NO Internet (data) monthly cost ... $33.00 ************************************** Straight Talk plan gives me... * 1000 anytime minutes * 1000 text messages * 30 MB of Internet (data) NO Roaming charges... NO Long Distance Charges... Cost... $33.00 The exact same price as ATT was charging me for a lot less services.. Sorry ATT, Verizon, T-Mobile and all you other companies who require a contract and are over priced... Straight Talk, Net-10 and Trac-phone have you beat .. hands down.... John

RE: Wear the full face helmet....

I rode my first motorcycle when I was about 13 years old.. that was back in 1955. As the years went by I finally started wearing a helmet.. and when they invented the "Full-Face" helmets I got one.... BAD CHOICE. It cut off my peripheral vision, it dampened outside noises like car horns, sirens, etc... and it made breathing difficult which fogged up my eyeglasses.. BUT... the one thing that made me throw away that full-face helmet was seeing a rider's neck broken because he was wearing one when he wrecked... I don't remember all the details in the report but basically it said that the full-face helmet was jerked sideways and because it was covering the rider's entire head, there was no way for it slip sideways on his head like a Open Face (1/2 or 3/4) style helmet has been known to sometimes do in a wreck.... ...thus when the full faced helmet twisted, so did the rider's head... breaking his neck. With well over a million plus miles riding all sizes and brands of motorcycles all across America, I have always worn an "Open-Faced" with a snap on sun visor and if it was raining really hard I sometimes snapped on a "Wind Shield".. (that plastic snap on wrap around thing).. But as soon as the rain stopped the wind shield went back into the trunk or bags.. Please NOTE:.... I am NOT saying a person should or should not wear any particular style of helmet ... that choice is up to each person.. But I am a strong believer in wearing some type of helmet when on a motocycle... whether driver or passenger. I have never even been close to any kind of accident while riding my bikes due to three things... * God was watching over me * Lady Luck was riding with me * I always pretended someone was out to kill me and I kept looking for that person. This is just my personal opinion based on over 55 years of riding motorcycles... and to each his own... John

RE: Storing extension cord

I've used the "Contractor Loops" system for fifty or so years and cords never get tangled or in knots.. Depending on thickness of cord, make loops between 8" and 12"... when the cord is "looped" it looks like a pile of "Spaghetti "O's" all looped together ....but actually it is completely tangle free.. Always start the "Looping" at the male end of the cord so when you get ready to use the cord, only enough of the small loops will slip out undone as needed when you walk toward your project pulling the female end, .... This saves having to "undo" the entire length of cord and having to re-loop it when finished and ready to store the cord away.... John

RE: Crock Pot out of Control

My Hamilton Beach is the oval shaped model that holds about 1 1/2 gallon... it cost $12 at Walmart in 2001.. it came with a Burgundy colored padded case with Velcro closures and a big rubber "O" ring to hold the glass lid in place while traveling.. The inner ceramic pot simply lifts out for easy cleaning.. there are four control settings... Off...Warm...Low...High For most foods I use LOW... or start on HIGH and and then turn to LOW after it reaches temperature.. I only use HIGH for foods like thin soups that don't burn easily after the food is finished cooking, I turn it to WARM while serving up food.. For that price and that many years of dependable use.. I can't complain.. John

RE: How long has this forum existed?

I have belonged to about 10 or 12 RV forums since 2000... but cannot remember all of their names.. Currently I am semi-active on Woodalls and Escapees... it was one of these two that I joined back in 2001 .. but a few years after I joined they "Revamped" their web site and during the process lost everybody's information.. Thus everyone had to re-register and the new registration showed that date instead of the original date when we first joined up.. John

RE: Straight Talk phones..another question added

Tom Thanks. I don't lnow what 'wireless sync' means, but it sounds like you are not to tether for internet browsing on a laptop. "Wireless Sync"... is just another way of saying a "WIFI" connection or a "Bluetooth" connection... example.... some phones can "Talk" to your computer and update things like the address book and calendar via wireless connection

RE: computer question and Norton 360??

There are three anti-virus programs that are rated "Best" by both the members of several RV forums as well as the "professionals" who make a living testing computer programs.. The last report I read and a large portion of the forum members for the past two years or so.. rate them this way.. The top three best computer anti-virus programs for 2010/2011 #1. MS Security Essentials #2. AVG is running a very close second place #3. AVAST is running "neck-n-neck" with AVG and... very important... ALL three programs are totally FREE and are constantly updated, sometimes on a daily basis.. The worst computer programs are... #1. Norton ..(all Norton products) #2. McAfee ..(all McAfee products) #3. AOL (notorious for taking over a computer) Back in the late 1980's and early 1990 I had AOL and it took over my computer and would not allow me to do some things that I wanted to do... I attempted to cancel my AOL account and they would not allow me to do it.. ended up calling American Express and asking them to stop paying AOL.. American Express said they had complaints every day from customers trying to cancel AOL. About that same time I had McAfee installed and it allowed a virus to invade my computer and I had to manually "Crash" and completely reformat and rebuild the hard drive. I then went to Norton and the same thing happened.. once again I had to crash the computer and rebuild from the original OS disks that came with the computer.. Each person has their opinions and that's the way it should be... as for my personal opinion about these three programs... I would rather go back to writing letters with pen and paper and using the telephone to talk to friends than EVER allow AOL, McAfee or Norton anywhere near my computers.. but as always.. to each his own.. John
