RE: Put in Bay / South Bass Island, Ohio via Miller Ferry

Not a problem. Bring the wine from the grocery store. It is cheaper than on the island. You will have no problem with the water route. Good Folks!!!

RE: I75 thru Cincinnati

Dayton is nearly completed. I 75 between Dayton and Cinn. is now under modification.
If you avoid rush hour, Cincinnati is not a disaster--UNLESS there is an accident Avoid the area if the Cinn. Reds have a home game. Wait until the game is started, then the traffic is normal. WLW (700) gives traffic reports every 10 minutes.

RE: SW Florida to Elkhart IN

I75 to 33 to 30 in Ft. Wayne. This is a shorter route than 30 by itself. Saves maybe 35 miles. You also could take I75 to I24 to I65 and then North somewhere in Indiana. You also could take I65 to I69 to 30 in Ft. Wayne.
The later route is still shorter than staying on I75. You will miss Cinn., but you will have Louisville.

RE: Want to Try SW FL Next Year

To me SW Florida means Lee County which is the Ft. Myers area. Charolette County to the north has little tourist infrastructure, and Collier County to the south is so expensive.
I STRONGLY DISAGREE WITH THIS COMMENT! There are many activities in Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte. The cost is less, and we don't have the terrible traffic. No, we do not have a symphony, opera, or 5 star restaurants. What we do have is a metro area of over 80,000 snowbirds and permanent birds. We share Sarasota to the North (about 40 miles) and Ft. Myers to the South (about 40 miles) We have Tampa Baseball Spring Training, The Best College Baseball in Florida with approximatly 50 colleges spending a few days during the spring break. We saw Ohio State/Michigan baseball at night for a donation.
We have been to Ft. Myers for a portion of the winter. A day here and there is enough for us.

RE: US-6 across Indiana and Ohio

Rt. 6 is a good road in Indiana from South Bend to the West side of Cleveland. If I were you, I would take Rt. 6 from the Valpariso, Ind. area to Sandusky, Ohio. Get on Route 2 (4 lane limited access) and us this road toward Cleveland. Rt 6 becomes a mess East of Sandusky.
If you send me a private email, I can give you more detailed instructions on your trip further East.
Wave at the Amish in Indiana; Say Hello to Bowling Green State University; Buy some ice cream at Toft in Sandusky, Eat at Barardi Stadium Dinner (corner of Rt. 4 and Perkins Ave.) Go South on Rt. 4 from Rt. 2. It is on the NW corner opposite the big manufacturing plant) Parking in the area.

RE: Decent stereo

Most RV audio systems are very poor quality. Newmar used decent speakers, but a off brand audio system. It was replaced 2 times on warranty. Problem again out of warranty. I replaced with a higher quality Kenwood car radio with a portable remote. The dealer was able to patch into the existing wiring so that we can control the bedroom and the front audio seperately. Works great. About $150 installed.

RE: nice Florida parks with reasonable annual rates?

riversidervresort.com
I75, Exit 170, 5 miles East. Great Park with many activities. New sites under construct. All RV, no park models. Not cheap, but is reasonable.
Call and ask for Bonnie or Karen.
Big John from Ohio recommended you as a potential resident. Usually a long waiting list, but it is shorter this spring.
Happy Trails!!!!

RE: Newmar Fifth Wheels

Mr. John Sannut spoke at the Newmar Kountry Klub International 2 years ago. "He said that the 5th wheel business was about 15% of the Newmar business. They would NEVER get out of the market that made them the best RV company in the business." This is a great quote from the X Fleetwood Manager.
We have a 2003 Kountry Star that is outstanding. We saw that this change was coming last year when the did not introduce new models. Let's look at a few issues.
All Newmar products are made on the same line. There is more profit on the $800,000 than the $65,000 units. They can not make a profit on the 5th wheels.
They have not made introductory towables for many years. Others (Jayco as an example) have made this the basis of their existence.
There are far to many higher priced 5th wheels than the market can stupport.
The cost of fuel and the economics have had a big change in the RV Market for many years.
Now for the issue that Newmar has really forgotten. The snowbirds that decide that they now longer want to travel make the change from a motorhome to a 5th wheel so that they can kept their unit, but not move it. Motorhomes are a disaster when you allow them to remain in storage. 5th wheels can be used by fixed snowbirds for many years. This is a BIG issue in SW Florida. Older users change to 5th wheels as their last camping experience. NEWMAR HAS LOST THIS MARKET.
Thank you to the Miller Family for providing us with a quality product to use in our retirement. I recognize that you had to make a business decision. I regret that I do not have the same warm fuzzy feelings for Mr. Sannut and his Fleetwood leadership style. Remember John, that you never slept in an RV until a forced trip by Newmar last year. Shame on you for your failure to learn about your products by using your products.

RE: Newmar Fifth Wheels

We have a 2003 Kountry Star 5th. It has been a great unit. The rumors about the death of the Newmar 5th wheel has been floating around for many months. This is a sad day for Newmar. It might be the correct decision for their business, but it is a sounding board that the 5th wheel market has far to many high end units. A few drop out and many new ones enter the market.

RE: Did you know Newmar pays their factory workers $30+/hr

Employees at Newmar Always return if they are recalled. This is FACT!!!! I was told it was because of working conditions, relationship with other employees, etc. I have never heard that it is because of wages. Visit some of the other plans and you will quickly see the better working conditions at Newmar. You will also note that they totally clean the area after the product is moved to the next work station. Visit Golfstream and you will find "junk" from the previous 2 or 3 days. Newmar has a convyor where the sweepings are automatically moved to the dumpster. There are barrels for scrap plastic, wire, etc. that can be recycled.

RE: winter rv park or spot in Florida next Dec.

Riversidervresort.com have a few rentals. This park is near Port Charlotte, but has an Arcadia address. Highly recommend. Rentals are limited, but are clean and a good way to get a feel for Florida in the winter.

RE: Best Routes Around Cleveland & Cincinnati?

Cleveland 271 to 71 is by far your best option (if you want to travel I 75 the remainder of your route. Far less traffic and a few miles shorter.
I 71 through Cincinnati. I would avoid the rush hour travel. It is really not bad driving. You need to carefully watch all of the other entrances and exits. The traffic at the Ohio River Bridge is always significant. You hope and pray that there are no broked down vehicles or accidents. It is an additional 30 miles to travel the outer belt bypass on the East and West.

RE: Carriage.....Gone..Bankrupt

Newmar was not sold. Owned by the Miller Family. There are many issues facing the future of 5th wheel. High Cost, Expensive Truck, Low CD Rates, Volatility on the stock market, high medical, reduced retirement, older retirement age, Fuel, high camping costs, children that require financial assistance.
Jayco is producing the Pinnacle (marketed as high quality). It is interesting that Most of the high end products are being mfg. by family owned concerns.
Newmar quality is better than a few years ago. 2000-2005 were very good. Quality has returned in 2009. (This opinion is shared by many at the Kountry Klub International Rally)

Faded Carefree Window Shades Revisited

I wrote a very positive letter to Carefree regarding the window shades that have changed color 3 times. I also related the problem with the delamination of the slideout covers which they replaced.
I received a letter yesterday that the color of my window awning has be discontinued. (NOT A SURPRISE).
They have agreed to replace 2 of the window awnings and pay for the labor to install new window awnings. (NEW COLOR). I would be responsible for the 3rd awning or I can use the Duplicolor product to cover the fade on the 5th wheel bedroom awning that is not very visible.
I consider this a very honest effort to solve the issue. Thank you Carefree. You listened to a honest complaint and have handled the issue correctly.
Thanks to the replies that I received. Thumbs down to the personal message that stated I was asking for something that was not appropriate.

Carefree Window Awning Change Color

I have 3 window awnings made by Carefree. They are white with camel brown on the bottom. (solid color). The awnings have been replaced 2 times because the color changes from camel brown to a light green. The wite remains perfect. The awnings are not laminated. The inside color remains fairly normal.
Carefree admitted to me several years ago that they had a problem, replaced the awnings and said that they have solved the problem.
My awnings are now 22 months old and the color is again GONE!!!! Not a mark or damage to the awings.
Carefree now tells me that they will only warranty the product for 12 months and the color change is "MY PROBLEM". I am very frustrated with their attitude and total indifference.
Has anyone had this problem???
Suggestions how I might get Carefree to evaluate their refusal to assist me with their product failure.
Thank you VERY MUCH for your assistance.

RE: Carriage, Inc Shut Down

Carriage is in a diffeent market than Sunnybrook. Both were good products. Sunnybrook is a volumne producer and Carriage was more custom production. This is truly a sad day for the RV industry. We are now down to Mobile Suites, Jayco, Newmar, Hitchhiker, and Tiffin that are not public traded companies. Yes, I know that Newell and others are also around, but very limited production.
Economy, Fuel Costs, Cost of new units, portfolios, CD interest rates, concerns about layoff and many other reasons are part of the picture. Unfortunately, we may have not seen the last of this bad news.
