I think we got a few channels of tv. Georgia Public from Waycross, and maybe some from Valdosta. WalMart is on the South bypass. We just mostly stayed in the park, Douglas is a ways from anywhere.

Also, you could come down 75 just north of Atlanta and go back up 85/985 to Duncans Bridge Rd which comes into Helen.
Not sure why Bamaman thinks the north is the only way, but it is shorter. Taking 129 from the south over Blood Mountain is certainly doable if you have a reliable tow vehicle.
Go up I-575/GA-515 and go around the mountains

RE: Which Georgia State Park is best for us?

Mistletoe SP and Red Top Mountain both are on CoE lakes, that have many CoE campgronds. When visting Lakes Strom Thurmand & Allatoona we prefer the CoE parks
AH Stephens has a fair campground, mostly pull thru sites that are fairly level. But be aware that there is a low bridge right in Crawfordville. From the GA State Parks web site
"If RV is taller than 12' 10", exit at #148. Go 2 miles and cross the junction of Hwy. 22 and Hwy. 278. Turn right onto MLK Jr. Dr. Go 1 mile, then turn left onto Alexander Street. Follow signs to park office."

RE: Move hitch up or king pin down?

With my setup it is easier to move the hitch up. Plus the higher the hitch the less likely you will be to make contact between the pinbox and the side rails of the bed during a sharp turn. Plus as already said you can better see the hitch and you will have more clearance over the V-gate if you have (or get) one.

RE: Roof Vent Covers

We had Standard Maxxair's and a MaxxFan on our last 2 5'ers. The vents were open unless we had the heat or AC on. Never had any problems with water coming in, even the one on the down sloping front over the bed. I just installed Maxxair II's on the Mountaineer, we'll see how they work.

I drive X miles a year. My car gets 25 mpg in the mixed driving I do, the truck would get about 15. I change the oil twice as often but use half as much. Truck is 6 LT tires vs 4 el cheapo P metrics. It just costs less per mile to drive the car, The truck will last a long time at 15K a year, and I can buy lots of 3K cars for the price of a new truck.

IMHO the GA-61 route isn't far enough out from Atlanta, you’re hitting the edge of the sprawl. Plus GA-61 is 2 lanes. I think US-27 between Rome and Carrollton is now all 4 lanes, but I haven't driven that section in several years.

Since you going south get of at the exit for Red Top Mountain state park. Go through Red Top Mountain to the 4-way stop and turn right onto King's Camp Road. If you’re going to stay more than over night McKinney Campground is nicer.
As to the weather, right now you would be good to dewinterize. Forecast lows for Chattanooga are just below freezing for tonight and tomorrow then stay above thru Friday. Highs near 60

alageezer's route is about the best there is. Be sure to take GA loop 1 around Rome, from GA-53 to US-411. US-411 will join with US-27 on the south side of Rome. The other thing to think about is taking US-27A from Carrollton to Newnan and I-85 south. La Grange doesn't have a bypass, but neither does Newnan. I would go through Cedartown, it's small and I don't like the bypass. But I would go through Atlanta also

Woodring Branch COE would be between Chattanooga and Vogal of US-76. Check to see if they are open your dates. Old Stone Fort SP in Manchester TN would be between Nashville and Chattanooga, open all year. Nashville would be hard to not go through. But you can take TN-155 Briley Parkway to avoid downtown Nashville. Get off I 24 at exit 43, get back on at 54.

Registering your truck for more weight than it's capable of towing is just paying extra taxes voluntarily. Your choice but it doesn't make your truck tow more or haul more.
Not true. With 14K tages that is the Gross Combined Weight limit with a cargo trailer. So a 7K truck means a 7K trailer. If I want to pull the 15K trailer weight that GM rated the truck at, I need plates for 24K. With RV's & boats Georgia does not require the tags to cover all axles, as the RV & boat will pay it's own tax.

They all use Lippert frames, I would pick the Cougar for quality and reputation.
And I would choose the KZ and hope that Lippert has not changed to much in the old Dexter plant. That said, so far Lippert has taken care of the issues with ours (replaced bad slide cylinder).

Look at the Montana Mountaineer 285RLD.
1. A length from 29 to 31 feet. We like the freedom to go and park most anywhere. And, this size is just right for the two of us.
Keystone lists it at 31’11”, close to what you want
2. 16 inch rims so we could mount our Michelin XPS ribbed tires. We had numerous tire failures in our fifth wheels till we discovered that the secret to tire safe traveling was mounting tires that were much, much better than what the manufactures offer. You can’t get good safe tires in the fifteen inch rim size.
We kept our BFG Commercials and had them mounted.
3. A large hanging closet with at least 7 to 8 feet of linear hanging rod
4-5’ It goes about 2/3 of the way across. The other 1/3 is a wardrobe that can hold WD set
4. Numerous cabinets or drawers for clothing storage
Between the WD area and the dresser at the end of the bed there is quite a lot. Enough for us but we probably don’t take as much us you, shorter trips
5. A comfortable 6 to 7 ft long couch that you could lay on full length and watch television. We are willing to give up a large dining table and the chairs. We rarely use the table in our fiver other than to store clothing, non food products and other stuff when we are parked.
Better than what we had. But it’s still kind of short for me. It’s a queen sleeper, which is better than the double that was in the last Jayco
6. A comfortable recliner chair where one could read, watch television or take a nap.

7. No roof window/vent in the bedroom ceiling. We are retired and sometimes like to sleep in or go to bed early. All of the fiver’s nowadays have windows all over the bedroom and in the ceiling. We have blocked all of these in our fiver. It would be nice to be able to easily darken the bedroom.
Vent now has 2’nd AC in it. I am going to have to do something with the sky light over the shower as it’s just to much. We had a full moon last time out, and it was shining right on the bed. I like the windows in the side of the slide, but they would also be easy to block out
8. Large pantry.
I’ve seen bigger, but it’s larger than what we had.
9. Heat for basement and black and gray waste tanks.

10. 50 amp electric service

11. Satellite coax feeds to both the living space and the bedroom
Think so, but we don’t have satellite so I’m not sure.
We also wanted only a double slide unit, we didn’t want a slide on the patio side. Also we didn’t want a “Light” trailer, with the diesel DRW truck weight just wasn’t something we were concerned with. I also wanted to be able to walk to the front of the trailer with out really stooping, at 6’1” I can just make it Any way it works for us, and it helps the dealer is just 2 miles away.

Pretty well said. I will add a little.
The odds are greater that you will have that bad wreck going 75mph on the highway when towing.
The odds of any wreck go up with speed, towing or not
The odds are absolutely not that you will have that wreck near home when towing. Even when not towing the saying that the majoity of accidents happen within 10 miles of home is misleading. The majority of driving is within 10 miles of home so obviously the percentage of accidents within that radius is greater. Severity of accidents is another thing altogether.
Severity of wreck goes way up with lights and cross traffic. As do the odds of having the wreck. Something not found on the interstate. And that most driving is close to home and not towing was the point.
The misshap backing into the campground would be nothing compared to the "misshap" barreling down a crowded interstate
Most crowded interstates will be in urban areas and the speed limits will have been lowered. No the mishap while backing won't be anything serious, but it will ruin your weekend.
The guy doing 55 in the center lane shouldn't be causing anyone to brake and change lanes in an unsafe manner. I don't get that one.
When I'm in my car, I do like to drive a bit fast but haven't had any safety issues due to someone putting along at 55 in the center lane. You change lanes and pass. If both other lanes are full then you slow down, keep some distance then pass when you can.
Shoot, I'm usually the guy putting along at 60 in the right lane with a tractor trailer or 2 when towing. If someone has an issue where they have to brake and change lanes, then that is their problem for not planning their lane change properly. It's not like you can miss seeing me.
Y'all must have better drivers in Florida than we do in Georgia. But take your guy from the next paragraph, and watch him try to squeeze in at the head of the line. And I'm usually doing 62-63 in the right lane with the trucks also. As I said it’s less stressful. And it uses less fuel.
All driving is potentialy unsafe, you are right. So taking the argument to the logical extreme, I am just going to hold the accelerator down when I head home today and the heck with it. It's dangerous to drive anyway so why follow any safe driving practices like stopping at intersections or allowing for the physics of momentum vs tire friction when turning? I've had a long day and darn it, I want to get home.You can see this guy in any major city at 5:00. But I would question the logic.
The point is just because you hook up a trailer does not make it unsafe to drive at X speed. If you a bad driver, you'll be a bad driver towing. I see lot's of rigs on the hyway that I would not want to drive, but someone thinks it's just fine. We have a truck that is more than capable, the trailer is not overloaded and does not have ST tires. I hope that some day we will be able to travel 300 miles a day and park before 3:00, but that is just not the world we live in today.

All true experts, unlike self proclaimed experts like you, state that excessive speed is dangerous and that if an accident occur, it is much more catastrophic.
I am sure that when your macho, bully, me first attitude kills someone, their survivors will understand that you work and needed to speed so you could go farther in a day.
I never said that excessive speed is not dangerous. I guess we have a different view of what is excessive. Now experts in some states have decided that any towing over 55 is unsafe, and have set their speed limits accordingly. Traffic engineers in other states have not come to the same conclusion. In fact many times speed limits are set artificially low for reasons that are wholly political, remember the National 55 speed limit. Now I do not recommend any one drive over the posted limit, if you chose to do so that is your choice. I do not recommend any one drive at a speed greater than what you are comfortable doing. If you don’t think it’s safe for you to drive X speed with your rig, you are probabley right.

The problem isn't the site size, it's getting in some of them. The road thru the campground isn't real wide and some of the sites require a real tight turn. This leads to problems with long trailers and long trucks. We could not get in site 37 last time we were there. We had to swap with one of our freinds and go into site 38. He had a hard time getting into site 37 with a 28' tt and a long bed CC truck.

While I do like to set the cruise at 63 mph and watch the world go by, I will set it a 73 mph when I want/need to. While leaving early and driving slower is better. It just isn't always possible for those of that still work. The chances of having a mishap backing in a campsite after dark are greater than having a mishap on the road getting to the campsite. It does require more attention to drive at higher speeds, I do arrive tired. Some may find that it is totally out of their comfort zone. But for others it’s just another day on the road
You are totally not safe at 70 mph and are threatening everyone else on the road. That's not my humble opinion, it is a cold hard fact.
The fact is that driving is not safe at all. But we accept the risks, as it has become a necessary part of our lives. But the odds are your going to have that bad wreck close to home, and not on the highway. Well unless you’re the person driving 55 in center lane of a 70 posted interstate, making every body else brake and change lanes. But even then nothing ever happened to Mr. Magoo

I generally leave very early and drive further on day #1,than other days...
This works for us also. We got in the habit of leaving ay 4:AM so we could get thru Atlanta before 6:AM. Then we found that we liked getting to the destination early, even if we didn't go thru Atlanta

I have a '07 Chevy truck trailering guide brochure. Both weights look correct with the specific gear ratio.
Chevy says the ball hitch trailer rating is 9500 lbs with the 3.73 axle or 12300 with the 4.10 axle.
GCWR is 16000 lbs with the 3.73 gears and 18500 lbs with the 4.10
Take the GCWR# that JIMNLIN gave and weigh your truck ready to travel. The difference is what you can tow with your truck. Get weights for the axles so you will also know what you can carry for hitch/pin weight.
