RE: full timing starts in 9 days!

We have one more week to go! We leave next Friday June 1. The one thing I was not expecting is how much work it is to downsize 26 years of living in the S&B! We have decided to keep the house and lease it out for now. We have what we beleive are good tenants ready to go. Having said that, the wife and I are exhausted. We are ready to go but we will be hard pressed to make the deadline. We will because we have to! Tonight until the first we are sleeping at our daughter and son-in-laws house which is just blocks away from our house because most of our furniture is gone. We moved our bed today to one of their guest rooms. The inside of our house is being painted but the garage still have much of our stuff in it. WOW.. We will move our 5th to in front of our house this weekend so we can finish packing it. The kids will follow us at our blog and we will call most ever day. Exciting but frankly VERY scary!!! Brian

RE: Dish Network Question For Techies

Tex. we've been traveling for two years fulltime with our 722, in a closed cabinet no less, running pretty much 24/7 with zero problems. You might have gotten a bad batch of 722's. Might want to give them another try. Not to hijack the thread, but Alpenliter, were you able to get the distant network waiver with the 722? I am going out FT on June 1 and I'm not sure how I'm going to deal with getting the networks (ABC, NBC etc). Thanks, Brian

RE: Mattress Lift Gas Springs - Upgrading Problems

I had the same problem. When I added the 4" memory foam the bed was heavy to lift and would not stay up on it's own. I replaced with 150lb 26" props. The plywood was going to shatter if I forced it closed! I put the mattress back on which was hard in the up position. Still no go. I finally put the foam on also which was near impossible in the up position. All of a sudden with all the weight distribued evenly all was GREAT! It closed and opened easily and stayed open with no problem. Now that it has been closed. I think it would be no problem without the foam. It was just that FIRST time that was a bear! Just make sure you evenly put all your weight back on before you try and close it! B

RE: Duro Tire Failure

When I ordered my Cameo and took delivery last June I ordered the Goodyear G614 tires. It was a 1200 dollar option however I got about 34% off the price of the trailer including the tires. so I paid 780 bucks installed for them. I am glad I made that decision! :) B

RE: stabilizers for 35 foot fifth wheel

I vote for Steadyfast. They are rock solid. Only 3 easy to get to LARGE wing nuts to turn. Much easier then the others to tighten and loosen. B

RE: Terrytown RV in Grand Rapids, MI & 2012 Cougar X-Lite 29BHS

Can't give an opinion about the Cougar, however I bought my Carraige Cameo last June (before Carraige went bye bye), and I can tell you that Terrytown treated me GREAT! The price was 30k less then in SoCal where I live so I drove to Michigan to buy it. They delivered as they promised with no surprises. Service department installed some stuff for me and jumped through hoops so I could be on my way. My salesman Rick Stetson was working on his finacial degree and I beleive has since moved on to an auditing job at another company in Grand Rapids, but I would not hesitate buying another coach from Terrytown if I was in the market! Good luck, Brian

RE: Redwood quality?

My prior TT was a Thor Jazz. The local dealer that I bought it from had TERRIBLE service. I ended up getting permission to get service from a local RV repair business. Then he ended up closing his door, although he kept two others open in other cities 100+ miles away! My curent 2011 Carraige that of course I no longer have a warrenty (well I have now bought an extended on it), I tried to buy 'local' here in SoCal. The two closest dealers were jerks. I am going full time in June so I wanted to order it the way I wanted to live in it! They wanted to sell what was on the floor. They had no interest in ordering what I wanted. Didn't matter that I wanted dual pane and Disc brakes. They tried to convince me it wouldn't matter at all. Further more best they could save me was about 5k. When you add the 4k delivery charge that is only about 1k off list. I ended up driving and making a GREAT trip out of it to Terrytown in Grand Rapids. They were happy to order what I wanted and saved me over 30k! Also Carriage untill they closed was happy to approve all warrenty work to a local RV repair business. Now tell me again why I should have stayed local and paid some jerk who knew what I needed more then I did 30k more??? Brian So it looks like you have now experienced the very reason that it is much more wise to buy locally and perhaps pay a little more. We have had 7 or 8 RV's over 30 plus years and always bought from local dealers. .

RE: How did you handle "aging parent" issue?

We've been planning on fulltiming for over ten years and have not made it a secret. I just early retired this month. Plan on going out in June. My parents divorced when I was young. My dad is 83 and married so I am not so worried about him. My mom is not married (although has been 3 times). Interesting thing is that she is from Europe and only saw her parents once after she came here in her 20's. My brother is about an hour away and frankly 'not the responsible' one. I have played that role for the last 30 years. Now mom is putting a lot of pressure and trying to put guilt on me for leaving. I have two adult kids in this area that are REALLY responsible, and I feel my brother needs to step up, but she is so used to being able to call me at any time to come and fix the TV or whatever. Oh well... just venting... B

RE: Emergency Tow truck options with 5th wheel

So my question is this: Good Sam has regular and Platinum Roadside. Coachnet has Gold and Platinum Roadside. Looking at both I'm not sure I see an extra $20-30 a year difference for Platinum. Can anyone convince me to spend the difference? Thanks, Brian

RE: Redwood quality?

RE: LED install issue

Some of my G4 puck LED lights would not work in certain fixtures. After reading this thread, I turned them over and what do you know, they worked! I need to reverse the wiring on those fixtures so I can put the LED's in them. Thanks for sharing about the polarity!!! B

RE: Straight Talk...Bring your own GSM phone coming 2-7-12

I can say that I bought a used (three weeks old so really new) Samsung Galaxy S 2 AT&T phone NOT unlocked. I ordered the AT&T BYOD ST Sim and got it yesterday. I ported my VM phone number and as of today my new Galaxy phone is definately working on the AT&T towers. Getting about 3.5mb speeds. Time will tell, but much better phone and unlimited talk for $45.00 per month. Not bad... Brian

RE: Open Range or Montana ?

Hi Babs, You are offering way to much.. I realize you are looking at a used one, but what was the MRSP of the coach new? This is a very tough market right now. I bought a brand new Carriage Cameo in June before they went belly up that listed for $87,500 and paid $57,575. My used Jazz travel trailer which had a LOW blue book of 21,000 took me 5 months to sell at $15,500. It is a buyers market, not a sellers market. If you have the money you hold the cards in this deal! Brian Hi everyone, i am new to the 5th wheel world.... we are looking at buying our first 5th wheel. Our plan is to put it on the land we bought and live in it until our home is built. I have found 2 5th wheels that i am interested in buying and would like your advice on which one is better or what the good and the bad is about both of them. First one is an Open Range 391res the asking price was $50,000 but we made an offer of 47,000 and they accepted. Previously owned by one person who only used it a couple of times and is moving and needs to get rid of it. 2nd one is a Montana High Country 313 RE they are asking 48,000 for it we haven't called or inquired about it yet but will today. anyways if anyone could give me their honest opinions about these two i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks :)

RE: Spend the summer on the Southern Calif coast

You are correct, however they have raised enough to get it opened again. Since this is not until August next year I thought it may be for McGrath. B Most likely Emma Woods, I believe McGrath is closed. Correct me if I am in error.

RE: Stabilizers for our new 5er

We have Steady Fast, took out most of movement. Only three knobs to turn, love them. X2! Works great and MUCH easier to tighten with the larger wing nuts and only 3 to turn. Plus they are not way underneath where it is hard to get to! B

RE: Passport America question

I have the lifetime membership. I am retiring next February and going full time. I decided to pay while I could afford it, and not keep paying when the income would be lower. I picked up my 5th wheel in June in Michigan and drove it back to California. I stayed in 4 PA RV Parks, all of them nice on the way back and all of them right off the interstates. Saved about $150.00 just in the 4 parks. I am very satisfied! B

RE: Steady Fast Stabilizers

I bought the Steady Fast. They are at least as good as the JT's and maybe better because the arms go across the coach. Don't want to get into a 'mine's better then your's' contest, so let's say they are equal. I DO know that the wiggle is out of my 32' Cameo. Now the BETTER part. Only three points to turn. They are much larger wing nuts. They are easier to access, no climbing under the coach to access them. If they are just the same, the access of the wing nuts make the Steady Fast much better in my book! B

RE: Carraige Closed Down

From my salesman, Carriage has been trying to work out a deal with a different banking source for awhile now. They are pretty close to putting a deal together from what I hear. PNC is their current bank and yesterday PNC called the note due. Obviously Carriage didn’t have the cash on hand to pay off PNC so they had to shut their doors. If the other banking deal goes through they will open back up and it will be business as usual. If the other banking deal doesn’t go through they will most likely sell to someone. Either way, the assets, reputation, and product is strong enough that someone will pick them up very quickly and Carriage owners will most likely hardly know the difference. It’s tough to say what it means for the product going forward though. So yes, the rumors are true to an extent, but they are not down for the count." Let's just hope this get's resolved! We have lost too many RV manufacturers during this horible economy. B

RE: No common respect in a campground anymore

Also a few years ago we were at Millerton lake near Fresno when a 'day' group had the nerve to come into my camp space and actually took over our bbq pit. (The campsite pit), and started bbq Carne Asada. Since we were leaving in a few hours I decided that even though it was our site still, it wasn't worth the headache to chase them out. I blew a gasket when the only english speaker in the bunch had the nerve to come and ask if we had some salt they could have! I ordered them off our site, to which they all of a sudden, "No Hablo English". I found a ranger and explained the situation. He not only chased them out, but he ticketed their cars for parking in a camping spot with only a day pass! How do I attract them???? BTW, if they were actually my neighbors and not squating my site, I would have been happy to offer them salt, butter, bread, extra meat, or anything else I had! B
