RE: Article on NPS restricting access

Tomman58: Those 'other factors' are not always so pure- they are often to win favor from one group or another without regard to the public opinion or benefit. It's an inconvenient truth that more and more the public is prohibited from using these "public lands". Oil leasing and development on Federal Lands has decreased drastically under the present administration. Oil production on private land (which the government has less control off but takes credit for) has increased. Just as the protections for the coral reef go to apparent extremes , here is a link that shows some of the extensive Laws, policies, regulations, statutes, and guidelines applicable to gas and oil production in this country. It is no wonder that nothing gets done (by intent?) when even the color of paint on structures in BLM areas is specified. Natural Resources Law center

RE: Article on NPS restricting access

I think They are banned because only conservatives fly kites: When I try to reason with my liberal friends they tell me to go fly one. :)

RE: Question about brakes on a John Deere chassis

Yellowdog 101- Freightliner took over the John Deere and Oshkosh chassis- and they have a lot of the part numbers and sources for parts. Need your VIN number -- 800-385-4357

RE: Exhaust Manifold Leak

Will; I had a 1990 MH on a John Deere/Oshkosh chassis with the Ford 460, the manifolds warped and sheared some of the mounting bolts. I picked up new manifolds from Ford, paid to have one installed on the road (Ouch) and installed the other myself. Ford had modified the 460 manifolds a number of times over the years and I had no more trouble. Ford and Oshkosh actually reimbursed part of the cost under a government settlement program. I no longer have the details on that, all my records went with the MH when I traded it. But- the newer manifolds had elongated bolt holes and no gasket so the manifold could contract and expand without shearing the bolts and I believe they were about $350 ea in 1996 or so. (that could be a gazillion trillion today. if Ford still has them) Had to drill out 4 bolts on one head and 3 on the other but no cracks in the heads. Don't know if that can be repaired. I agree headers are a good option... Good luck....

RE: Red Max Pro #3 On Rubber Roof 6 Mo. Update

Barkeepeers friend is Oxalic acid. Although a fairly mild solution, do not know how it reacts to EPDM rubber. (or vice versa) It is not recommended for silver, aluminum and lacquered surfaces according to the label. Another concern for use of RedMax3 on the rubber roof, if you at some point wanted to apply Liquid Rubber, would it adhere over the RM3??

RE: Towbar Locks

I do lock the towbar & the receiver to the hitch. (Blue Ox bar) On the clinch pins I use tie wraps through the rings to secure them at the toad end. Can't fall out and it's more obvious if tampered with. I do keep small snip pliers in door pocket of the toad.

RE: Red Max Pro #3 On Rubber Roof 6 Mo. Update

...Sheltie; This is a discussion on prepping the surface. RedMax3 Preparation You should not have much oxidation but you would need to remove any wax. The Barkeepers Friend should do that. That was all I used on mine, even with some oxidation and it turned out really well. I applied 4-5 coats and got a nice shine. Re-touched last year with 2 coats. No peeling or cracking. It worked great on the decals..Did not do the rubber roof...

RE: Towbar Locks

JimGo: Agree, not necessary-- FWIW I think those are hardened bolts and replacing with a pin lock may not be as strong or allow play. Might ask Roadmaster. Does look good.

RE: Serv Writer messed up my Odometer

hershey- my post was just to tease jallen4. Glad you solved the problem. Occasional problem on the XCS chassis is the VDC dropping a gauge to zero and then resetting to normal operation on the next restart. (reboot??)

RE: Shifting The Allison Manually In The Mountains

Tom- The Allison transmission should downshift to the next lower gear as soon as it can without overspeeding the engine. In most cases the transmission selects 2nd gear as desired and drops down each gear to stay in a safe operating range until it gets there. Don't think manually selecting would help because the transmission computer won't let it downshift any earlier. Exhaust brake engaged...

I still think the service writer owes you a cold one.... Pottery shop rules, you break it- you own it.. (just kidding Jallen4)

RE: Flat Towable Vehicles

Suzuki Grand Vitara 4 wheel drive model with a transfer switch flat tows 4 down, does not rack up mileage while towing. Also no fuses to pull, easy setup. I'm happy with mine... But: 4wd model without a transfer switch cannot be towed 4 wheels down OR on a dolly. The 2 wd drive models can only be towed with rear wheels on a dolly. Detailed discussion in the owners manual.

RE: 6500 LP Generator

Doug: Calculations not that involved, start with full (per OPD valve) tank. Check generator hours against propane refill to OPD. The Onan 6500 propane full load is 54+ amps. I'm sure with both a/c's, converter, occasional microwave, coffee pot & Tv's etc I don't draw anywhere near full load amps.. Numbers have been consistent .5 to .7 gl/hr, over 700 hours in 10+ years- even using some propane for cooking.. OP use seems high especially at little or no load but apparently from single refill, if no leaks it just might be an inaccurate fill to start.

RE: 6500 LP Generator

Agree that's high. Same genny, on the road, generator running 1 a/c I use about .5/hour. Parked, 2 a/c's and high electrical usage it's about .7/hr.

RE: Water getting in the motorhom

If you remove the shroud on the roof, check the drain holes in that bottom plate, if they are clogged, (leaves/ dirt) -could be the problem. Gasket leak would be between the roof and the plate. hope this helps..

RE: Cummins engine terms

Coalescing Filter is inside the Haldex/Midland air dryer for the air brakes. I believe it removes any impurities from the air system.. The coalescing filter and the main filter assembly should be changed periodically. A kit is available with all the necessary parts. Instructions and photos here.. Important that all air pressure is released from the brake system before working on the filter. Particulate filter does remove "soot" from the exhaust system, it is only on the newer engines. Particulate filter hope this helps

RE: Antifreeze

Bill: Here are the Cummins Coolant requirements. Probably much more detail than you are looking for. Section 3 Extended Service Intervals- goes into the use of those ELC's that were a concern and why. If the ELC you use meets Cummins 14603, or CAT EC-1 there is no cause for concern. Cummins 14603 Hope this helps..... Edit: Also at the end of the article in the Appendix is a Q&A section discussing the Chevron, Texaco and Shell ELC,s and what action to take if they are in your engine....

RE: Chassis (Lube)

Should not mix greases, some are not compatible. For U-joints and chassis my Freightliner manual calls for Lithium 12-hydroxy stearate grease (NGLI grade 2 with EP additives) Lubricate until new grease is seen all four U-joint seals.. Freightliner has a manual with information on chassis maintenance, parts and fluids etc. it's a free download here. Know your chassis

RE: Antifreeze

krayborn: The ISB originally required a Heavy duty, Low Silicate coolant meeting ASTM D-4985 specs . (Should be on the label) ASTM 3306 is automotive, Light Duty and not for Diesel engines. If you use 4985 coolant it is flushed and changed at 2 years. It does not need a SCA additive or pre treatment when used in the ISB. It is available at Truck shops, Freightliner, Detroit Diesel etc. Don't use DEXCOOL. Also Chevron, Texaco and Shell had extended life coolants (ELC's) that caused problems in diesel engines. Cummins standard for coolant now is CES 14603 and the OAT long life coolants meet that standard. The OAT (ORGANIC ACID TECHNOLOGY) COOLANTS are good for 6 years or 600,000 miles with a booster (extender) added at 3 years. Again the label must show it meets cummins 14603. I use Final Charge OAT(PEP BOYS) and it's the same as Detroit Diesel Power Cool Plus (part # 23519397) Both are made by Old World Industries. Final Charge hope this helps....
