RE: A "C" to a "5" ?

I'm agreeing with those that say "pick the fiver first". You probably will end up buying something different than you really think you will when you first go shopping. It would be a shame to limit yourself because you didn't have enough truck to pull what you really wanted.

RE: Why boondocking?

I'm not anti-social but I really don't want to live 3 feet away from my neighbor. We've driven thru parks where the units have to be staggered slightly so that the slide out on one rig doesn't interfere with the awning on the next one. You can hear your neighbors conversations so you know what they are having for dinner, what tv show they are watching etc. No thanks. We stay at parks sometimes but we boondock probably 70% of the time, primarily for 2 reasons. A little privacy (peace and quiet) but a distant 2nd reason is the cost. For a modest investment we can be set up so we have all the conveniences we need.

RE: Phoenix to West Yellowstone

Personally, I'd rather take a whipping than run the Salt Lake I-15 gauntlet. Just did it a couple of weeks ago and then remembered why I hate it so much. The traffic and the construction are bad enough- but the roads are so rough that I thought I would get whiplash and we nearly unloaded every cupboard in the rig. Take ANY route but that one.

RE: Anyone else name their rig?

When my first grandson was born the first I did was buy him a little red wagon. The first time he saw our 5ver he called it "Poppa's Wagon". He is 12 now and we are on our second 5ver and have 2 more Grandsons- but it's still Poppa's Wagon

RE: How long of a 5th wheel to get

I cannot speak to your needs with the kids and family- but according to the floorplan numbers our fiver is 34'. However if I run a tape on it it's closer to 38' end to end. In the 5 years we've had it I have never found a national, state or county campground I couldn't get into because of length. I have, however found spots that can't handle the width of the 3 slides. I wouldn't want a longer one- it just

RE: Led Lights

It depends on how much you boondock. We just completed a 79 day trip. We had power only 21 days- the rest was boondocking. A solar panel and led lights made all the difference. We can read an hour or two, watch an hour or two of TV and run the heater if needed and never draw the 2 12volts below 12.2 amps. The LEDs are definetly worth it and if you do your homework and watch your lumens and color intensity you will be more than satisfied. No question in my mind!

RE: Arizona next winter maybe

I forgot to say that the strip is only about 7 miles from the town of Parker. It has at least decent shopping- a Walmart, a Safeway, restaurants etc. Maybe we have just been lucky but we have never had the kind of wind that the Havasu area is known for.

RE: Arizona next winter maybe

We stay at the La Paz county park but we don't mind the sewer arrangement. There is a new section there that is privately run- called Pirates Cove- that I think had FHU. I didn't look into it but it looked a little spendy- although we met people there that were spending the entire season. I'm sorry I don't know enough about the other parks in the area to comment about them- I just know we love the general area. The scenery is great, spectacular sunsets over the river, quiet at night, always something interesting happening on the water (ski races, float planes, gorgeous boats, etc). We like to bike a little too and the area lends itself to that. Maybe check rvparkreviews.com for more info on other parks. Not much available immediately south of Parker but check out the California side of the river too.

RE: Arizona next winter maybe

We have traveled a good portion of the state and have drawn a few conclusions- some of which have already been expressed. We love Tucson- but it is about 10 degrees cooler than Phoenix or Yuma. I'm thinking the biking would be good there tho- Casa Grande was a good suggestion- not too crowded and close to lots of stuff you may need. Florence is a real haven for the ATV crowd- don't know about biking. Yuma is indeed the warmest but is crowded and parks are expensive.. We love Parker too- hard to beat the Parker strip. Beautiful, good weather, things you need are close. Yeah- I'm thinking the Parker Strip.

RE: Generator Selection Problem

Personally I vote for the Yamaha 3000ise. I have one and love it. But depending where you intend to keep it (back of truck, in a compartment, etc.) check out physical size. You can't go wrong with either Honda or Yamaha and their cost is comparable at around $2200.

RE: Lake Havasu suggestions?

We also have stayed at Crazy horse. Nothing special but it works fine. We sometimes boondock at Craggy Wash, just north of the airport. Also agree that Parker- or just north of it at the La Paz campground is beautiful. Tv or internet not so good tho...

RE: GPS INQUIRY

We have a garmin and like it. I DO wish it had lane assist like some of the newer ones. I looked at the Rand M at Quartzsite too. I liked it and was set to buy it but I tried a couple of searches- one for a casino, one for a particular campground- both within a hundred miles of Q. It couldn't fine either one in it's data base. I think its gonna be good but it's not there yet. Decided to wait a year and then look again. Whatever you decide, make sure you get lifetime updates.

RE: Verizon 4g MIFI?????

Yeah- I'm thinking it depends on where you are and where you go as to wether 4G will do you any good. Recently, when I was having some trouble with connectivity I called Verizon. The gal said I was eligible for an update to a 4G card. I was in Lake Havasu, AZ at the time but I live in Montana so I asked her how much 4G I would have access to (I already knew the answer). When she stuttered and stammered and finally said "none" I had to laugh. But she said I could update and then be ready if it ever came to some place near me. I'm not thinking so... the ol' Mifi 2200 is working just fine for me.

RE: 1st time to Quartzsite

Been in Q for about 5 days now and am headed to the Big Tent today. Stayed away for the first couple of days hoping the crowds would lessen somewhat. How did everyone like that wind we had Saturday? I felt bad for some of the vendors- had to create problems for them.

RE: Why do you go to AZ

It may be that your neighbor has worked very hard all his life and never had time to learn how to have fun. Well, he NEEDS to come to AZ! There is so much to do here, learn here and enjoy here that he would never have to ask that question again. You just have to open yourself up to new things and let 'er rip. Or he could stay home and paint the bedroom. His call...

RE: USA Today Top Campgrounds

I'm thinking the criteria for "best" is different for every single RV'er. Then to have some clown who knows so little about the game make up the list is absurd. I look in "rvparksreview" and I think it's hilarious how some people rate a campground at a "10" and the next guy hates the place and rates it a "4".
Everybody has their own ideas of what they need/want/like.

RE: Bridge Clearance

2nd day out with our new Bighorn we encountered a tunnel in Washington state that scared us. According to the signs we couldn't make it but I watched the semi trucks sailing thru there with no problems. Not worth the risk. We found an alternate route that proved to be a very interesting detour so we were not sorry we did that. Do your homework before you travel that day, double check what your GPS tells you and error on the side of caution.

RE: smoking pork shoulders

Last summer I was at a local fair, and while waiting for my wife I observed one of the vendors loading his smoker with meat for the next days sales. It was all frozen solid. I asked him about that and he said that he used only frozen meat because it cooked faster (?) and the temperature of the meat went through the "danger zone" (the temp where bacteria can form) faster. News to me but it makes some sense. I've smoked both and can't tell any difference.
