RE: Seasonal Site..Leave the fridge on or turn it off each time?

We leave ours on with propane back-up for power outages. Never had a problem, and we don't have to wait for it to get cold when we arrive.

RE: What are the advantages to a 5th wheel?

My experience has been that towing the 5th wheel seems easier and more stable (especially in wind) as the unit is just an extension of the truck. Parking the 5th wheel has also been easier. The gas mileage difference has been negligible for the most part. We were towing a 31' 7,000 lb TT and now tow a 37' 11,500 5th wheel and I can't say we've seen much difference in gas mileage, I'm guessing that the aerodynamics involved account for this. Having said that towing a camper of any size isn't cheap!
The biggest upside to a 5th wheel for us is the storage has increased both inside and out. The downside is you lose the bed of the truck. We have an attached (standard equipment on our model) bike rack on our Cougar that works fine for transporting 2 bikes.
Happy hunting!

RE: Teenager At Home and RVing

We've raised 6 boys. Camping becomes a challenge for families as the kids get older. As I always told my kids the Bill of Rights did not extend to our address, it was a dictatorship! LOL
Seriously our rule was unless you were gainfully employed that required you worked on a weekend you came with us no if's ands or buts.
The world is a much different place unfortunately and there are too many nuts out there and the worry of what could happen at night would keep me awake. No matter how mature your daughter is and I believe you know your girl, the things that can go wrong are just too many and the society we live in means if her friends are with her and something does you will be responsible for that also and probably sued.
As the boys grew older and work became a priority they had 2 choices, grandma or the other parents house (we are a blended family).
Good luck whatever you decide. As others have said and like my own kids have told me camping (even when forced) produced some of their sweetest family memories.

RE: New Phone - What to get

IPhone 4 is my vote. I'm a techy novice, but I LOVE MY IPHONE! I have no use for Siri so therefore I'm happy with IP 4. Extremely user friendly.

RE: Camping with a 1 year old

Ummm good luck with that. No real way to corral a 14 month old. We always took lots of walks, and did lots of outdoor activities, wear them out. Remember it's just a phase soon to be replaced by a new one :)

RE: MIRROR ON RV WALL

We have used 3M Command products to hang lots of things in our camper with success. Mirrors, pictures, decorative items. 3M makes a lot of different products.
Good Luck!

RE: Getting out the door

I agree, I thought it would get easier with each progression. We started out in a tent and have graduated through the ranks, pop-up, TT and now a 5th wheel.
We keep our camper fully stocked (like a 2nd home) including non-perishable food and clothing. We are down to bringing perishable food, medication, laptop and camera (as needed). We also try and keep a list from the previous trip of anything we might need to replace.
The secret is learning to live with less stuff! I'm not there yet but every trip we seem to do better. I suffer from the "i better bring this what if we need it" gene. My DH is of the opinion we need NOTHING other than beer, our dog and clothes!!! Obviously throughout the years we've had a ton of stuff that we've never needed. As the years go by we rid our camper of more and more unnecessary items.
It does get better with every trip. Good luck :)

RE: Color me STUPID! Bob's a doorknob! A story of a dummy!

I must say after reading this I was laughing out loud. Not at your misfortune but at your ability to take it all with a grain of salt. Most of us would not have been so easy going in this situation.
You certainly know how to put a good spin on a bad deal! I agree you need to write a book.
Best of luck! Lauren

RE: Keystone 5th wheel

We own a Cougar 327RES 5th wheel. Love it! We had small minor issues taken care of at our 1 year check-up appointment. No other issues have cropped up in the last 18 months.
We looked at several models including Outback, Laredo, Jayco and others. It came down to floor plan, fit, finish and price. We felt the Cougar offered everything we were looking for and we have not been disappointed.

RE: Dewinterize...Don't Tempt Me!

We are in southwest Ohio. Officially starting our 2012 camping season this weekend WOO HOO!!!! Green beer, and all things Irish :)
Like Skipnchar said we can always re-winterize if we HAVE to. This is the reason I have this nice house on wheels so that I can enjoy it in all kinds of weather.

RE: What to expect when doing a trade-in

We traded in our 2007 Rockwood TT (after 6 seasons) on a 2011 Cougar 5th wheel. We had it listed on Craigslist while we were looking and had serious interest twice. The person we thought would buy it could not get financing. We ended up getting a reasonable offer from the dealer. We might have been able to get another $500 from a private sale, but in the end it wasn't worth it to us to deal with it.
You have to be realistic about what your unit is worth, ours was in excellent condition, and all that upkeep paid off when trading or trying to sell. It also helps to know you are dealing with a reputable dealer, and to have been down this road a time or two. Our first trade in experience was not quite so nice.
Live and learn...

RE: 5th wheel - More for the buck ?

We had a 30' TT for 6 seasons and LOVED it. We upgraded to a 5th wheel over a year ago, and LOVE it also. 5th wheels seems to have more interior room and more outside storage.
Personally I would have bought another TT, but my husband is the driver and he much prefers the 5th wheel tow experience over the TT tow. I do love the headroom as I tend to get claustrophobic at times and the added headroom makes a difference for me.
I agree that it depends on what you currently have as a tow vehicle, and whether or not you would need or want to purchase a newer bigger vehicle.
Happy hunting! Lauren

RE: Post Warranty repair contract

thats one more reason not to buy warrenties ,there 99.9% scams. start your own warrenty put some bucks in the bank ,say the cost of the warrenty then add some every month ,use this for your rv repairs, no phone calls and your always happy with the service.
DITTO! you rarely (I've never heard )hear a good warranty story out of those companies
that did not include a LONG ensuing hassle or a fight to get what you paid for!

RE: Seeking opinions: Forest River / Forester

We owned a Forest River Rockwood TT for 6 seasons. We had a leaking window which was finally fixed by my husband. The only issue that was recurring and ridiculous was the television and the sound system. they were of poor quality and our television had to be replaced twice by the dealer, and once by us after the warranty period.
Our only issue was with our dealer. The sales guy was wonderful of course. The service was HORRID and unpredictable.
We would have bought another Forest River product (from a different dealer) had we found a 5th wheel to our liking. We were overall happy with the product, and when we talked to Forest River customer service directly they were friendly and helpful. Good product for the price.

RE: Is HD TV That Important

I'm a girl, therefore I do not know or care about the difference HD makes or for that matter the quality of sound coming out of my cheap speakers, I guess those are things men notice. My hubby is always trying to show me how much better the quality is. It is LOST on me! Of course I think TV is only good for two things impending bad weather in strange places and major league baseball games!
But man I sure need a decent coffee maker in my 5th wheel! LOL

RE: Leaving food in stored RV

We have had a TT or 5W since 2006. We live in a hot humid client during the summer and cold and freezing during the winter months.
During camping season March - October I leave all food, cleaning supplies and toiletries in the camper, with no problems whatsoever.
In early to late November when we winterize I remove all food canned and boxed, and any cleaning supplies or toiletries with are subject to freezing. We have NEVER had any issues of any kind,
I can however tell ou that crackers even unopened seem to get stale quickly during hot humid summer months.
We store off site, and have also NEVER had any critter problems, hope I'm not jinxing myself on that front by saying it aloud :)

RE: Cougar 28SGS

Cougar 28GS looks like a great unit!
Not sure how old for child is, but unless you plan on having more I don't see the need for a bunk house. We bought the Cougar 327RES last year and love it! At the time only one of our kids was still home and interested in camping. If he decides to join us he sleeps on the couch.
For us it came down to living space v. sleeping space. We enjoy the extra living space and just make do when we are lucky enough to have one of our 6 grown kids join us.
Of course this is coming from the people who previously owned a Rockwood TT 8296SS (no bunks) and camped frequently with 4 teenage boys and their stuff stashed anywhere for a weekend :)

RE: Window leak

i'm guessing it is the window frame itself that is leaking.
We had a 2007 Rockwood TT with a front window that seemingly leaked from day 1. We took it to the dealer under warranty and they supposedly fixed it. Long story short they either didn't fix it properly or they didn't fix it and the window continued to have a small trickle of a leak every time rain hit it a certain way.
The problem was completely solved when my husband took the window completely out of the frame and replaced the butyl tape and caulking.
We were fortunate that my husband can do such things. Good luck!
