RE: Cat 3126 Valve Gaps

I had the the valve adjustment done(often referred to as "the Lash up"), at 20,000 miles on my CAT 3126E, as CAT recommended. I was on a trip to Oregon at the time and had the work done at Petersen Caterpillar in Medford, OR. They charged $350, that was 3 years ago this coming August. The techs had to go through the bedroom hatch to get to my engine. I wouldn't have the lash up done at any place other than a CAT dealer as it is necessary for the techs to tie into the CAT computer at the CAT factory for any software updates that can only be accessed from CAT!!!
The lash up didn't improve the fuel mileage but it did improve the engine's performance. They told me that the engine really needed the work done and that was at 20,000 miles. from start to finish the entire process only took one & one half hours for both techs and that was not full time for both.

Interesting. Of the top 100 issues I have about my Motor home, somehow this one didn't make it. But that's just me.

RE: The best compressor to buy to air the tires to 100PSI ?

Look at the Campbell-Hausfield 120 volt portable at Walmart. It goes to 150lbs. I use it to fill my tires to 110/115lbs. It's small works great about $45.

RE: Onan Generator aint Genning

I have a Onan 7.5KW Diesel generator and then same thing happened to me. On the top of the generator next to the start switch is a lever/button which is very easy to accidentally turn off. You might want to check that out. I have hit that switch a number of times and the generator motor runs but no electricity.

RE: Tow Dolly and Chevrolet Tahoe?

I had a 1988 Chevy Tahoe 4 X 4 and towed it for about 40K miles on all 4 down.I had to get a Remco drive shaft and to disconnect it when towing. It was a royal pain in the butt.

RE: Radiator Leak

Beazaway:
Many of us with '02,'03 & '04 Monaco rear radiator DPs had continuing problems with radiator leaks. The problem was Aluminum radiators which were torquing due driving, vibrations & going over driveways in & out of fuel stations. My first failed at 2,000 miles, my second one failed at 15,000 miles. I fought with Monaco for over a year and finally got them to replace the radiator with a brass/steel one at their cost under warranty. They did the 3rd one at the factory in Coburg, OR and told me that the cost would have been $7,000. I now have 40,000 miles on the coach and all is still well! Leaking radiators never get better, only worse. Don't be $$$ foolish, replace it now while you have control over where it is done. Having the problem in the middle of nowhere only gets much more expensive and aggravating.

RE: Wrecked my 96 Dynasty, need advice!

Tom:
Sorry to hear about your accident. Here's some advice based upon my experience with casualty companies:
Neither your insurance company nor the insurance company of the party who hit you are your friends.
You need to make sure that there isn't any damage that is not visible, like the under carriage of your rig.
Make sure that the replacement parts are new & not junkyard pieces.
Do not sign off, do not sign anything until you drive the rig after repair and until you are COMPLETELY satisfied with the work done by the repair shop.
Take the above advice and turn this claim over to your insurance company...that's what you paid premiums for, it's their job to satisfy you,the policy holder.
No, I am not a lawyer but just someone who has been screwed by insurance companies and their adjusters....or at least they tried. GOOD LUCK, let us know how it turns out!

RE: I am new to rving....Help

We have a 36' DP and tow a Nissan XTerra, all the time. It will be very difficult for you to find spaces for a 40' RV in many National Parks and older USFS campgrounds. The trailer will drive you nuts. You ought to look into equipping the Volvo for 4 on the ground towing. The towing equipment these days has little effect on the Toad. You would need auxillary braking on the Volvo, not a big deal now. I would rethink your trailer for the Toad.

RE: Miffed at Monaco Parts

I had the same light burn out and Monaco gave me the name of the OEM in Washington state (I am trying to find it now) and I bought it from them. As an aside, I just bought 12 rivets from Monaco for my screen door with 12 clasps. The parts were $8.00 and the shipping was $9.50 !!! Navistar isn't making it in my opinion. They don't understand the RV market and RV owner. I was at the Coburg, OR plant last August for some minor repairs and it was total disorganization. The techs were still great but the front desk was incompetent.

RE: California to Vancouver Trip

There are two really great campgrounds that are relatively unknown near the California/Oregon border.Just below the border off of I-5just above Yreka, CA is "Tree of Heaven" USFS campground right on the Klamath River. No hook ups but they have potable water and restrooms. You can reserve on Reservations.gov Try site # 10. Just above the border in Oregon is "Emigrant Lake"...full hook ups and great sites above the lake. You can also make reservations on-line. It too is right off of I-5.

RE: Water Pump keeps running

I've had the same problem in 2 RVs....it was an air lock. You need to literally suck the air out of the "in" line while it is running to prime the water into the pump.

RE: Cost of having AIR conditioning ON?????

Last early Spring on a trip down to So. Cal. on Hyway 395 we hit a very violent wind storm and had to stop driving at Independence, CA and pulled into The Ft. Independece Travel Plaza to spend the night and dry camp until the wind passed in the morning. At 5:00pm I filled the diesel tank to its absolute fullest at the station and pulled into a flat spot with some 18 wheelers. The temperature dropped to 29 degrees that night and I ran two 1,500 watt electric heaters on full all night until 6:00am the following morning. We ran the water heater and the fridge on propane all night as they had been on propane when we were driving. The 7,500 watt QD diesel generator ran for 13 hours and in the morning I was curious as to how much diesel I had used. I pulled into the same island/pump I had used the day before and filled up the fuel tank to exactly the same level at 5:00pm the day before. I took exactly 8.5 gallons of diesel or .65 gallons per hour. My generator had approximately 400 hours on it.
Doesn't answer your air conditioning/gas generator question but I thought some may find this germain and interesting.

RE: CAT 3126 Fan Bearing Lube

I have a 2003 RV with a 3126E (manufactured in 12/2002. When I picked up the rig at the monaco factory it had less than 100 miles on it. At 1,900 miles ( obviously still under warranty)the fan hub backed itself out from the block and tore up the serpentine belt because the engine left CAT missing 2 of the 4 fan hub bolts....never installed at the factory. Cat replaced the fan hub with a new one without a grease zirk. They said they weren't putting then on anymore due to lubricating difficulties. That was Sept, 2003. I just pass this because I have heard CAT engines manufactured after 2003 that still had grease zirks on them.
