RE: Random questions - Cash or finance travel trailer

If you can afford to pay cash do it. The TT will depreciate. If/when you decide to get out of camping or move up you'll lose less money. Just like with any loan the first few years of a loan goes primarily to interest vs. the principle.

RE: 2005 Ford Explorer nuetral tow kit

I had a kit installed in my '03. It's my understanding the light is just part of the mod. The other part entailed the serviceman either installing a computer program or modified some settings. I'm not sure which, but I did see him connect a computer to the OBD-II port. Total cost for me was about $120.

RE: Why is my toilet mounted on a built up area?

Mine is raised too. With me and my wife being short I always felt like I was on a handicap toilet. Plus stepping into the shower was a pain to because of the high side on it. I used 2x4s and some plywood and built up floor in the bathroom. Now it's perfect.

RE: looking for the "CORRECT" tow vehicle

Based on your limited usage and budget forgo the extra cost of the diesel. My first pick would be an '02 or newer F-250 crew cab with the V10 ('99-'01 had spark plug issues). The V10 has a lot of power and is very reliable. The SuperDuty crew cab has more room than the GM and Dodge (except for MegaCab which may be too new for your budget).

RE: Why?

Maybe it's too warm for them inside or they like seeing what's going on outside. Could be the guard dog thing like you mentioned. But since they'd rather be with you they come in when you're home.

RE: New vs Used

I went through the same thing a couple years ago when looking for a TV. Any diesel automatically added a few grand to the price regardless of mileage. I called a guy on a '01 F-250 with a 7.3 PSD. The guy was asking $15K, which I thought was a touch high compared to other ads and KBB, but since he didn't list the mileage I thought maybe the high price was due to low mileage. I called and he said "it's just getting broke in...only has 225,000 on it. People seem to think that diesels will last for ever. Looking at the potential for turbo, injector and HP fuel pump, transmission, suspension problems on high mileage vehicles I went with a V10 and have been extemely happy with it. Now that I have the Banks kit on it I think it pulls as well as my old 7.3 Excursion.

Don't use a spread. Use marg or butter. I use Land-o-lakes with canola oil in it.

RE: Streaming from computer to OLD TV

You can use a TV with S-video or RCA connectors. The fact that your TV is 22 yo means that it only has a regular coax connector. Therefore, connecting the TV directly to a computer won't happen. However, if you have a VCR or DVD player that has a video in and will send the signal out via the TV coax that may work. There are pigtails that will convert a video jack to RCA. Google "connect computer to TV" and you'll find the info.

RE: So whats with all the crew cabs?

Much more useful. The back seat provides alot more room. I've had regular cabs, extended cabs and now a four door. I don't figure I'll ever have another non-four door truck. It has come in handy way too many times.

RE: $100 Tow Bar Installation

We wanted to repurpose a 1995 2WD manual trans Isuzu Pup that my son retired for his new car.
You say an Isuzu pick up, but the photos show what looks like a Chevy S-10?
Look again, there may be a Chevy symbol on the grill but the body is an Isuzu.

RE: banks exhuast

I just purchased and installed a Banks Power Pack (headers, exhaust, air intake and programmer (OTTOMIND)) on my '02 V10. I bought the kit from Performance Truck Products for $2800 (Banks had a 10% off Christmas sale and PTP knocked another 10% off. A little heads up, if you purchase the OTTOMIND (computer programmer) with the exhaust you will not rcv the chip with the exhaust parts. Two boxes and an envelope were delivered to my house. In the envelope there were instructions on where to find a computer code. Once you have the code you contact Banks and give them that information. Also, since PTP purchases from a distributor vs. directly from Banks my bill of sale wasn't in the Banks computer system so I had to email them my bill of sale. It took about a week for me to rcv the chip.

RE: Want to swap generators...

I got sick of repairing my Kohler. I bought an Onan 6500 LP at Visone RV in southern KY. It only had 275 hours on it and I paid $2800. A new one from my local Onan dealer was $4900. The swap was pretty easy. I had to re-route the propane hose and electrical. The only thing is I can't start/stop the gen from inside and my inside time meter doesn't work. I could wire it up but I don't have the schematic for the MH. Besides, I rarely ever started the gen from inside anyway so it's not worth my time.

RE: Kohler Confidant 4

I had a Confidant 7 but I replaced it with an 6500. I've noticed little difference in fuel usage. The Onan spec is .8 gal at half and 1.2 at full.

RE: 99 Monaco Generator Power

I pull my racecar with my MH. I use the block heater outlet in the engine compartment. My car hauler came with a 30 amp plug like what you'd see on a camper. I bought a converter plug so I can use a standard 115 VAC plug. I've tried plugging into an outlet in the basement but if a lot of stuff is on in the trailer (air compressor, battery charger, fan, lights) I will trip that breaker. I've never tripped the block heater breaker. My block heater doesn't work and I've never needed it so I've been contemplating moving the plug to a location that's easier to get to because when the trailer is hooked up I can only open the engine cover about 8 inches which makes getting to the plug a real chore.

RE: How to hang a wooden sign

I put small hooks in the sign, bought some small chain. I have seen people stick a 4' sheppard hook plant hanger in the ground and hang the sign from that.

RE: TV question

x3 on the Wingman. When I converted to digital all I did was install the DTS convert. My batwing worked good but I went ahead and purchased a Wingman. It enabled me to pull in a couple more channels. I have noticed that since adding the Wingman I don't have to point the antenna in a particular direction unless the signal of the channel is extremely low. 99% of the time I just raise and lower the antenna.

RE: Lift Pump for Diesel

It's cheap insurance. There is little to no indication when a lift pump goes bad as the hight pressure fuel pump will continue to suck fuel out of the tank. However, it's very hard on the pump and it will eventually kill it. Death of a HPFP carries with it a repair bill in the $3,000 range.

RE: car hauler

I personally wouldn't travel without a toad. To much hassle setting up & taking down, finding parking spots for the MH or renting a car. Call the CG ahead of time and ask if they have a place where you can drop the trailer. Take the car off the trailer, park the trailer where they say then park the RV. Recommend putting a hitch on the Kia so you can use the Kia to park the trailer in case the storage area is not condusive to using the MH. I'm assuming it's a flatbed trailer so it's probably in the 1500 lb range empty. I've moved my flatbed around my property several with my little Kubota tractor. Therefore your Kia should have no problem moving it. It's not like you are towing it on the road at speed.
Is your Kia AWD/4WD? If only FWD why not use a dolly instead of a trailer?
If it actually does need all four wheels off the ground how about using a dolly for the front wheels and axle dollies for the rear. That would be very easy and alleviate having to fool with a large trailer. You could secure the axle dollies to the tow dolly when not in use.
