RE: Towing

Luckily @ $9.99 I had purchased two sets so switched over to the second set for the last month. The wiring is pretty much junk so think of them as throw away!
rocmoc n AZ/Mexico
I had the same coupon, I got them for emergencies:E

RE: Update: Cooltech won't work with dealer towing package

Sounds to me like there is a ground issue? The cooltech wiring harness might've been damaged when the 'dealer' was in the process of transfering the cooltech harness from your 2011 to your 2012.
The cooltech system is plug 'n' play and uses the existing factory wiring\fittings, but there is a ground wire (cooltech harness) that needs to be spliced into the factory ground wire... :W
You might try going to a local business that does rv\auto wiring. Most likely, they'll use an old fashion test light to troubleshoot your issue.

RE: Increasing Class A Tow Capacity?

..You know, I asked this very same question a few months ago, as I was curious if it was possible to beef up the receiver on our Georgetown MH to handle a bit more than 5,000 lbs, since the 26k GCWR and 20,500 GVWR would allow you to tow more than 5,000 lbs, if it was not for the receiver limitation.
I got pretty much the same answers you are seeing here - Nobody will do it 'cause of liability, 'legal' limit doesnt change, blah blah blah. Finally, after several (not so helpful) posts of that nature, one guy posted a link to a previous thread, where someone had found a welder that would do the work (beefing up receiver on a Class A), and was about to have them do just that.
We ultimately decided to dolly tow our van, and found a way to do so without going over 5,000 lbs, so decided not to beef up the receiver.
I'll see if I can dig up a link to that thread..
On Edit: HERE is the link to it.
:h
A tow dolly plus your van is less than 5k? :E
It would appear to me that a TOAD like a Jeep with just the tow bar (no dolly) would be less weight and virtually no tongue weight. :R

RE: Increasing Class A Tow Capacity?

On my previous coach (2007 Hurricane 30Q), Mel's welding beefed up the existing hitch, I wasn't flat towing my JK then... I was towing with a Carson open trailer (8.5x20ft), the trailer alone was probably 1,500lbs plus my JKU. :h
If you don't mind, i have a question to this. I have a 2001 Hurricane(29D) that has an "official" tow rating of 3500 lbs. I would like to tow my Jeep with it that has a weight of about 4500 lbs. I contacted Thor if the hitch could be upgraded, but they refused any information on this. With 16000 lbs motorhome weight I am way below the combined weight of 26000 lbs. The Jeep would be no problem for the drive train, I just would need to know what to do to increase the towing capacity of the Hurricane. My son is a certified welder and ASE certified master mechanic and could do the welding without any problem (we have all kinds of welding equipment at home, as long as we know what and where to strengthen the system. Do you have any information for this?
I'm sure Thor\Fourwinds doesn't want the liability...
I no longer have the 2007 Hurricane 30Q, so I can't look at the hitch. You might want to call Mel's welding in Vista, Ca. I am going to have them upgrade my exisiting hitch on my new coach to a Class IV, I just haven't had the time to do so yet.

RE: Is Hurricane Low End

You can buy a brand new Hurricane for under $100,000. Think I saw one at the RV show for about $70,000. So yes, it is low end.
:R
You can also buy other new gassers like Fleetwoods, Winnies, Damons, ect for under $100k

RE: Increasing Class A Tow Capacity?

Just out of curiosity, why don't you want to flat tow?
I've been flat towing it for several years. It's just an idea at this time to get a trailer. I've recently built it for 37's and to occasionally run Johnson Valley trails. So far, I've run 6 - 8 of the Hammers (3 trips) and had no running gear damage. But there could be times when it wouldn’t track straight after a trail run.
I’ve got a Dusy Ershim trip planned this summer, maybe Moab next fall. Those also could be places where it would be nice to trailer it home.
I'm also wondering which is a more "efficient" way to tow it. Flat towing is less weight of course (no trailer), and no hitch weight. But the trailer axles, bearings, and lighter tires should roll more efficiently than the TJ's tires and axle's. It has built JK Rubicon axles (trussed, sleeved, gusseted). As you know, when flat towing, these are always spinning the diff R&P and drive shafts. Again, just thinking through alternatives at this time.
True, when I went to Moab, I was thinking the same thing and trailered my JKU at that time. Then later last year, we did the Rubicon and I flat towed with my current coach. Luckily, I didn't need the trailer :W
I'm set up for 37's, I have 5:38's now... AND, I still have my trailer, but I use it to get my Polaris RZR XP around... My trailer is a little long but it works...

RE: Increasing Class A Tow Capacity?

...The RV owner must realize that a 6,500 pound trailer will put at least 700 pounds on the hitch, and take away 100 - 300 pounds front the front axle...
Fred - Won't I have some control over this (i.e. by carefully picking the exact spot to place the Jeep on the trailer)?
As for me, when I was using my open trailer (8.5x20ft) to tow my JKU on my previous coach, I personally didn't have any steering or handling problems. The again GVWR was 16k and GCVWR was 28k. With 20ft of lenght and my JKU being 16ft long (bumper to bumper), I could move it the front or back so it was more centered on the trailer. I found that for the best tire wear (on the trailer), it worked best with my JKU being forward.
Just out of curiosity, why don't you want to flat tow?
With the trailer\coach combo, I went from San Diego to, Zion NP, Moab, Mesa Verde, and back via the Grand Canyon with no problems. However, unless I found a 'pull through' site long enough, I had to disconnect the trailer and park it in a near by dirt lot. Not a big deal, but a hassle if you want to leave early the next morning and you can't 'load up' the night before :S

RE: Increasing Class A Tow Capacity?

The towing capacity of a MH is determined by the Manufacturer based on braking, GVWR, hitch, frame Mfg. etc. You can make changes to your hitch, and reinforce the frame but the recognized towing capacity will not change. If the Mfg. states 5K that is the max. recommended towing capacity.
Yes I know some try to upgrade the towing capacity on MH's and Pickup trucks but that does not change the legal rating for the tow vehicle.
You're forgetting GCVW and I'm under that without the trailer :R

RE: Increasing Class A Tow Capacity?

gone2dadesert - Your avatar got me wondering. That JK has to be over 5,000 lbs (I know some fully armored JK's that push 6,000 lbs). Have you done anything to beef up the towing set up your Hurricane started with?
Yep, I'm over 5k and probably closer to 6k+ with the armor, winch, lift, 35's, sport cage, ect... :S
I have not upgraded my Class III hitch yet, I am taking my MH to Mel's welding in Vista to upgrade my existing hitch... They've done it for me on my previous coach :W

There are welding shops that are certified to either weld \ upgrade your existing Class III or upgrade to a ClassIV hitch.
Try calling your local welding shops for quotes. :E

RE: Flat towing a 2012 Honda Fit

California states that any towed vehicle over 1500 lbs. must have a braking system.
Please state your source, the attached link contradicts your statement CA Recreational Vehicles and Trailers Handbook 2011
Cheers :C
Correct. People state here often that some states require toad brakes. I have never seen a reference that confirms that. Trailers yes, cars, no.
I don't know, but what about this one: V C Section 26458 Baking System Towing Vehicles
Exactly....
c) Subdivision (a) does not apply to any of the following combinations of vehicles, if the combination of vehicles meets the stopping distance requirements of Section 26454:
(3) Towed motor vehicles.
