that depends on the amount of chlorine in the water and how much you use it.
The interesting thing is that resin remains and is reused, but the carbon disintegrates and is flushed out with the back wash.
I'd say at least a couple of years. Get a chlorine pool test kit, and periodically, just test the chlorine coming out of your tap. If you see it starting to get above maybe 1 ppm, add some more carbon.
You may not have a lot of chlorine, it depends on your area.
Here in the Houston area, we're averaging over 3 ppm, TWICE what you'd find in a pool!

Just my own two cents:
I recently bought my 2012 AF1150 from PJ at Princess Craft. There were some minor issues that I brought to her attention and their response has been excellent. In fact, rather than have me make the 200+ mile round trip to her dealership, they authorized me to take it to a much closer RV shop (Camping World) and they will pay for the correction. I have to say, that's pretty good in my book.
I hope you get the same quality service I did, but their hands may be tied, and it may be the manufacturer that's ultimately responsible.

You can usually just pour a cup or two of carbon into the tank. Typically, the valve can be spun off, or there will be a "port" on the side that you unscrew.
A cup of carbon will do an amazing amount of work, especially if it's mixed with the resin, as it allows more contact time.

You don't need a deionizer, that would be overkill and the media actually has to be replaced. Just a softener with some added carbon will do the trick.
I plan on mounting mine in the gap near the wheel well, with a clamp like a fire extinguisher uses.
After doing the math, I figure you can easily go 800 gallons between sodium backwashes assuming an average of 10 grains/gallon.
Very worth having, even without a tankless heater.

Sure, I've seen several very small water softeners that you just attach the hose from the city water to, then through the softener, and a hose out to the TC.
A Small unit, say a 1/4 to 1/2 cubic foot size would give you at least a couple of hundred gallons capacity before it would have to be recharged by backflushing with rock salt. You'd have to fill a bucket with salt (preferably cheap rock salt from home depot, etc) then draw it into the softener. Slosh it around a bit, and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Then just run enough water through it to get rid of the salty taste. You're good to go again.
Systems on homes do that automatically, but you'd have to do it manually.
I've been thinking of building one out of some spare parts from our warehouse.
It'll be about 18 inches long and 6 inches diameter. I've seen them advertised at RV shops for about 200 to 300 bucks. If you mix in some carbon too, even just a coffee cup worth, it'll really help because it'll knock the chlorine down.

A couple of points:
Carbon will NOT remove water hardness. You need an Ion Exchange resin found in water softeners to do that (assuming the hardness is calcium carbonate- the most common problem)
With the Ion Exchange resin you are trading the ions of calcium for the ions of sodium (used in the backwash). The TDS remains the same but the sodium is less damaging and allows soaps to work better.
Also, I'm not certain about the mobile version of a tankless water heater but I can assure you that the versions sold for homes use MUCH more propane.
It's on for less time, but while it is on, it's a blast furnace, so I'm thinking you may want to consider that if you're carrying around propane bottles and limited capacity. The main advantage of the tankless is unlimited hot water (If you're attached to city natural gas or a large supply of propane) and energy savings in that it's not on all the time just sitting there keeping water hot. But when it's on, it's really on:)
Trust me on this one, I play music professionally, but when I'm not on tour I work part time as an engineer for a water purification company and one of our divisions is Rinnai tankless water heaters.
We dry to dissuade people with very hard water from putting in the tankless because they sort of quick fry the calcium and you can gum them up very quickly.

AF 1150 Air conditioner question
After using my new AF1150 4 times here in Texas, I've noticed one thing that kind of bugs me: Is there no way to run the air conditioner so that it cycles on and off??
It seems to be set up so that the fan is always on even if the compressor kicks off. That results in a whole lot of air being thrown at you while you're sleeping.
(After sweating to death in my old 5th wheel, which even 2 air conditioners couldn't cool, I never thought I'd be complaining about too much air, but this is pretty breezy:))
Even if you turn the little directional vent to the closed position, it really will blow.
The only option I've come up with is to partially close the privacy screen at the foot of the bed.
Has anyone else encountered this and if so how'd you deal with it?
The vents on the ac are aimed at the front and rear of the coach.

only 4 trips so far on new AF1150 on my 07 Ram 3500 dually, all about 200 miles each and averaging 13mpg at app, 62-65 mph.

you know, it's funny: we've been making guitars for 30 years out of composites (Ovation guitars originally made from the lyracord- from a company that makes aerospace components.) More recently, Composite Acoustics makes them out of carbon fiber. They sound as good or better than wood (trust me, I play for a living and know) and they never warp, sweat or need attention. And THEY'RE LIGHTER!
I wonder if we'll ever see those construction methods used on truck campers?
I mean, come on- if we can make a curved body support the tension of strings, how hard could it be to make a straight wall?

When I recently bought my AF1150 from Princess Craft in the Austin Tx. area, I was able to literally walk back and forth between the two (they carry both lines), and I was, sadly, NOT impressed with the finish work of the wood trim etc. in the Lance. Just rough edges, poor seam work, etc. If that was the stuff that was visible, I can't imagine the stuff that was out of sight.
The AF, on the other hand, was literally flawless. The more time I spent walking back and forth between the Lance and the Arctic Fox, the easier the decision was. I ordered the AF1150 wet bath and love it.
